Title: Need help with using tv as a parallel monitor
Post by: Tuomas on Tue 14/08/2007 16:19:34
So, my sister used to have their tv connected to their computer for movie watching purposes. Basically, they had a laptop, and would connect a cable to the "video out" and then connect to a scart adapter http://www.svideo.com/dmscart.html as seen here. It was connected to the yellow one that says "video".

Now they plugged their computer from "video out" to the same hole as before, and it doesn't give out anything. I was wondering if the monitor attached would affect somehow, or that the little switch you see there should be put to the "input" position, but basically that did nothing new, so even if that was partially the problem, it's not the whole thing.

To make it straight, there's the computer video card -> video out -> adapter http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/VIVO_Cable.jpg -> sound cable to line-in ; video cable to male-male rca -> to scart adapter.

Ok, we made some experiments, and the problem seems to be with the beginning. Since we tried plugging the rca cable staight to the rca port in the laptop, it worked just fine. Now plugging it into this computer, to the adapter, it didn't work. So my guess would be, that either the adapter is in wrong hole, or the driver doesn't quite get it. That, or it just doesn't work, or the video card doesn't accept split/parallel/double screening :/ please help us, we must see these movies before they have to be returned.

What has changed in-between it working and not working? Was it a different computer and TV that your sister used before? I have the exact same setup as you do, and since I've had one since like 3DFx Voodoo 2 times :D, it probably isn't the 3d card specs. Of course, the drivers could always be insufficient or the card not installed properly. S-video plugs are also pretty fragile. Check that none of the pins have fallen out.

well before it was just, you know the "video-out" that's usually in a laptop, it's an rca female. And the one on the computer is I think a 4-pin.

So the laptop works fine with just plugging in the male-male rca to it and then the scart adapter. And the computer has the 4-pin, then an adapter *see picture above* that makes it an rca female. I don't really know the difference between the videocards, but as far as I know, it should work if the adapter is working.

One thing. There's a button in the laptop that automatically transfers the picture to the tv, but I can't quite get which set up that would be in the common pc.
