Title: Needed: a good warp speed animation!!!
Post by: TerranRich on Wed 03/03/2004 00:52:14
What do I mean? Well, have you ever seen Star Trek, when a ship is going at warp space and what you see on the bridge are lines (as stars) streaming past the ship outward from the middle? Well, I need something like that, done in a 3d program preferably (or a really REALLY good 2d one), but more elaborate and nifty, perhaps with some colors as well.

If you do this for me, you'll be a made man. Or at least will have special credit in my game. :)

Can you provide a picture of the ship to be warped? It could make it easier for the Shipdrawingly challaged people such as myself.

The simplest way to do this would be to use one or more particle generators in, e.g., 3dsmax.  You could try applying the motion blur in 3dsmax itself (video post, if I recall correctly), but you might get more creative results if you export the animation as a sequence of frames then create a Photoshop Action which outwardly blurs the stars on each frame.

earlwood: There is no need for a ship in the animation, because this will be shown on the bridge's viewscreen.

migs: i've given up on 3ds max and am sticking strictly to Poser for everything, including rooms. I'll try it out myself in poser with particle props, but I doubt I'll get anything good.

ANybody else willing to give it a try? :P

something like that?

Do it in flash with low quality, that way there will be no anti-aliasing.

something like that?

YES!!! You can take creative license with it, if you'd like, perhaps add some spectrum colors here and there. Oh, and can you change the "center" of the animation to about 20% from the top and 25% from the left? :D Oh, and maybe a liiiiiitle bit slower? :)

Otherwise, that's great and I will love you long time!

what res?

I can't really loop it well in 3d studio but if you have a movie editor you could do it easily enough

and i don't really know what you mean by changing the angle. I think i understand but it doesn't make much difference

and colours where? in the stars?

edit:

here's a test

That's perfect, eric. I don't need it to loop, doesn't have to be perfect, but how could I use a movie editor to do it?

Also, by changing the angle, I mean, do you see how the center of the image is where the stars shoot out from? I need that point to be 20% from the top, 25% from the left (or whatever I said before), instead of 50%/50% (exact center of movie images).

And colors... I was thinking maybe 3/4 of the stars are white and the others have light tints of red, green, blue, and/or other spectrum colors (red/orange/yellow/green/blue/cyan/violet). I don't know, I'm trying to give you room for some creativity here. :P

You do this for me, and you'll be a made man. Wait, I already said that before...

Hmm. Where are you, Eric? Are you mad at me? Do you still love me? :)

I'm just wondering if you could possible try some of my suggestions above, as I am at the point in development where I would need this animation. :) Thanks.

oh yea, hey, i still don't really know what you mean by the percentages, do you mean so that the stars are mostly passing by and the camera isn't really traveling through them?

I think what he means is on 800X600 resolution he wants the center of the starts to origionate from 200, 120...  so it looks like they are actually traveling to a location not directly in front of the view screen, (like on a triagular shaped ship inside a room) as like in star trek the stars in the rooms are actually traveling longways on the ship....

Thats just a guess though

I can't think of any other way to put it. The front and side windows of the bridge are not centered. In other words, the "camera" is not in the dead center of the bridge, pointing straight ahead to the dead front of the bridge's windows. The camera is at an angle. Therefore, the stars aren't originating from the dead center of the room. I am going to use the movie as a background, behind the bridge scene. Think of it as a blue/green screen, where the movie takes up 640x400 and the bridge scene will be placed on top of it. Look at the image below:

Imagine that the white parts (the room itself) are taken away. Then you have an entire screen full of warp-speed stars streaking outward, but NOT from the center. See? :P

how about this... why don't you send me the background through pm [no email please, hotmail is stupid] even if it's just a concept, something for me to work with

nome'sayin'?

Gah! Okay, here it is... I've drawn the center of the warp effect.

Mainly, the ship is travelling through a "tube" and the inner edges of the "tube" are stars streaking outward. They are elongated because of the high speeds. Take creative license. Make it half white, half multicolored, or blurry, or swirly from the center, or something? It doesn't have to be streaking stars. It coould be a swirl emanating from the center. :)

BTW, just make it a regular AVi movie, I can import it into Poser as an animating background.

I don't mean to be a smartass, but doesn't Windows have a default screensaver that would be perfect for the occasion?

That is awesome stuff for being modelled in Poser.. I didn't realize it had the power for that.

how would you plan on taking a screensaver and adjusting the camera angle and then saving it as an AVI file?

i'll see what i can do TR

A screen recorder and a video editor (you could crop out the portion you need).

but that still doesn't work at all...

you have very little customization, the stars don't look that good and you can't adjust the camera, the stars will always be coming straight at you

Thanks, Eric. Anyone else who reads this can give it a shot, too, if you want. It would be GREATLY appreciated. And thanks for the comments about the scene, shbazjinkens. That was done in Poser 5, as are all the characters and rooms and objects, etc. And the screensaver you're talking about doesn't have streaking stars, just moving white dots of differing sized. :P

Square dots at that, now that I look at it. Plus I think I understand better what you're trying to do now, sorry.

So you modelled and textured those in Poser? Or did you download them somewhere? It looks really impressive for a CG scene.

Heh, i downloaded the entire scene as one file. Don't worry though, I will make the bridge my own creation...i.e. I won't use that, because it's someone else's work. :P

how long do you want it to play?

Oh, however many frames AGS allows for an animating background. Is it 10 now? 15? I'm not sure. Make it 30 and I can cut down the frames accordingly. :)

oh.. i have it at 200 frames, heh

why not cut it up into 2 objects and make it many frames?

That's true, I could do that, too. You know what? Give me 200 frames!
