This competition would be a lot like the caption contest. But on the other hand totaly diferen.
COMIX! That would be the main thing in the competiton. That way the AGS comunity would show how they can create without the computer (or not, dependig on the rules) and they could show how they can create an interesting story without having to create a whole game for it.
Every week or so there would be a host that would decide the main characters, place of action, genre, quantity of color, stile (like manga, realistic, funny) and any other rules that he/she might prefer (like for instance no copiying of characters that already exist).
Example:
Main characters: Werner the rocker and Andi the biker. You may also add one character of your choice. (as someone from germany may hawe already noticed these two are characters from the WERNER comic)
place o story: The city
Genre: Comedy
Color: Black and White
Stile: Funny
I really like the idea! Making comics am fun!
I think so too. And thrugh the comix people could show that they can make great storylines.
And for those less talented at drawing. The comics aren't going to be rated only be theyr looks. They will be also rated by the content :)
of course reference material would be provided?
Like some images of the characters for people that haven't heard of them, and some details about what sort of punch lines they make etc. etc? If so its a good idea.

well for people maybee. Unles you describe him enouf so that you don't need to post a picture. The artist may modify the character a bit to if he wants. But not to much. He must stay as close to the original character as posible.
But for animals the wouldn't need a description. I mean ewery one knows how a dog or a rat looks like. Or do they? ;)
the moose here: http://www.state.me.us/legis/senate/images/geninfo/moose.jpg
Is very different from the moose here: http://duryea.us/nf/bullwinkle.gif
For example
ok. This is bulwinkle and a real moose. But the thing in comix is that people imagine things diferently and it is amusing to look what they created. If they all create the same image, now isn't that boring?
Im talking about when you have rules such as 'One character must be BLAH from comicX' You should provide reference material. I for one dont know what Werner the rocker and Andi the biker look like.
But on the other hand the artist could look for them.. But it would also be good to have something to pad the thread like the PP :D
yes. If you have that rule than you would definetly have to post a picture. But if you make up a charcter like for example monika the elaphent than each artist would create his own character.
oh. BTW. Werner is the one driving and andi is the one beside him in the trailor or what that thing is caled.

The comic is from germany. But even if you come from germany you wouldn't understand everithing in this comic. It's in one of germanys knock of languages.
I think its an awsome idea. How ever I think it should be something more like this.
Example:
There must be 2 characters, one must be female. The name Betty must show up in the comic. The entire scene should take place in a cafe. And the line "Are you sure?" must show up somewhere also.
I think something more like that would bring out better styles in people. Theres a force on there but the comic could be about anything at all, serious or funny. However its still very strict.
Comic version of MAGS :D
and viktor, I am happy we could.... debate without going too 'cause I said so' :)
evil: That's an interesting idea. I thought about in an I think everithink should look like this. You must specifi the main character, how many people would be in the comic, q quote from the coimic, place of scene. These are the things that hawe to specified. Then you could add your own rules. For instance, one person must be female, no copying of original characters, it must be in manga stile, etc. But I think that your idea definetly improwed things. This would make evaluating much easyer.
Hotspot: Thanx
Ooh! I like this! This is cool! But if there is no copying of characters that already exist, why do you say for an example Andi and Werner? Or is no copying a choice for the host? It'd be cooler if it was only original characters created by the enterer(?) that could be used? So that the host couldn't regulate specific characters, but still describe one, example:
Characters: Idiot, Con artist, and a made-up person of choice
Area: Mid-western town
Regulations: One person must say the word 'what?' in each panel, someone's name must be Jonny-boy and someone must have a foot fetish.
Sorta like Evil's, I think.
Anyway, I think it would be better if the host didn't use already created characters.

that no copying o charcters that already exist is an aditional option that the hosz may choose. That makes the game a bit harder. But if he chooses and says that the copying is aloved than that would be ok. Thiss is nacisery becouse of the story. If he says that the character Sam from SAM AND MAX FREELANCE POLICE is supose to make a guest aperance than that would mean that an original character may be copyed.
Just a question on the side. Would I have to tell anyone befor we would start the game. A moderator o someone other?
EDIT: I was bored and made a fast comic. The quality is poor becouse it was done in like 15 minutes. I used Evils rule example. It stars a cimoc character I already created a few yers back. But now I was looking for a new character to add to my comics. And evil inspired me to make the coffe waitres Betty. Thanks Evil.

so what do ya say? Should I start with the competition or not?
The first one would be rather easy becouse it would be the first time ;)
Victor, it sounds like a fun idea, but dont we already have a lot of competitions?
not really, there is 4 or 5 at the max, and they all contest different things, this is something new and isnt covered in the others so I think it shouldnt be a problem.
This sounds really cool, but if I could make one big suggestion it would be not to limit style. The last thing I want to see is a dozen shitty manga comics (or a dozen manga comics at all, if I had my way...). The internet has far too much crappy manga already. Just let people draw comics in whatever style they want, and you'll end up with a much more interesting and useful competition. If people end up doing it every week (or however often it runs) it will allow them to develop their own personal style, rather than having to constantly adapt and simply draw mediocre ones every week. And how many other defined styles ARE there really in comics besides "manga"? I guess you could say things like cartoon, realistic, etc., but why bother? If the category is "realistic" I guarantee that a bunch of people who might have otherwise entered won't enter because they don't know the slightest thing about drawing realistically. You already seem to want to have a lot of restrictions, so I think this is one we don't need.
Well, there's at least seven in Japanese comics at the least, but american comics are much less segregated.
yea, in american comics it goes: Marvel, DC, Image - Independent Comics - Porn
The Marvel, DC, Image people have the indies and the indies have the Marvel, DC, Image people and they all love the porn...
but i agree with Sir Mix-A-Lot, if the comp said "draw in a manga style" i couldn't enter since i've never drawn in a manga style.
Those don't really seem like different styles though, they're just different publishers. And hollister: there are definitely more than seven styles of American comic art (or Western comic art which is probably more accurate).
Well, I DO draw in 'manga' style (now I feel like dork though) and I completely agree that it's just a really bad idea to limit style. I too would just detest to see every comic submitted drawn in the same old way. The whole fun of this kind of competition would be to let people fly with creativity, and that's the only way it would be interesting for people to look at, too.
You can't honestly put a number on the number of styles. EVERYONE has their own style (unless they're completely ripping something off), even if it's similar to something else. I say give people a topic, maybe a page limit, and tell them to go wild with it.
Sorry if I sound hardline, but I think it's the only way this could work. I personally don't think I'd have time to enter the comps myself because my style is also that of taking freaking ages to do anything ^_^ and I have a game to work on!

HEY!!!
You stole my style!!
JERK!
well if you don't agree we would just simply cancel this rule. Nothing is more simple than that. And I must agre I never looked at it from that perspective. Good argument.
kinoko: You don't have to feal dorky. I draw in manga stile to. I take that as a privelage , becouse it isn't that easy to make a manga stile comic.
so. What do ya say? Should we give it a try? I mean it can't heart to try ;).
In my opinion, we could wait until after July.
The competition forum is pretty cluttered up right now, and I'd prefer seeing at least the team challenge being completed before introducing new activities.
But if another moderator gives this the green card, it's completely ok by me. I don't wanna spoil your fun :)
No problem. I took a look in the competitions forum and I think your right. Then I'll bump this topic up at the end of the month. Just don't lock it ok ;).
OK it's coming to the end of the month and I just wanted to come back to the idea of a new competition. ;)
