Title: New Competition Idea... AGIFC!
Post by: rtf on Mon 15/03/2004 00:20:54
Hey, hey, everybody!

I was just reading the Competitions and Activities forum rules, and it told me to post here if I had a new competition idea, so here I am!
It's such an obvious idea, I'm surprised no one has implemented it before (if they did, then it is not in the list in the Rules thread)
Introducing...

Animated Graphic Image File Contest (Title pending)

That's right!  AGIF!

With the internet craze in high gear, animated GIFs are all the rage around the net!  That's why I would like to bring to you the ultimate in AGIF making, bringing the best AGIFers from across the land to gether in unity to compete against each other in a competition run by me!

And here's the good news...

If you post now, you can get the full AGIF expirience for free!  Every week, there would be an AGIF conpetition under strict guidelines made by the winner of the last week!

Dosen't that sound like fun?  Of course it does!

So what are you waiting for?...

UPDATE:  How long should I wait before I suggest it to the Competitions aand Activities moderators?

Sounds like a great idea!

Yeah, it does. We have a competiton for making character sprites but not one for animating them. I say go for it, with moderator aproval of course... Mods doesnt count...

Why are there so many art contests and only one music contest?

We need a "remix" music contest!

I'll say just keep it to the single sprite jam, there're enough freedom granted to it already, the one who thinks of the rule can put in a rule like "must be animated" if he/she wants. So most things are well covered up there.

So I suggest keeping it to one contest (but with varying rules each time), rather than creating some other new contests.

But of course, wait for the others and see what they prefer.

I agree with Geoff!!

This is a FANTASTIC idea for people who like drawing, but if there was a way of incorporating music with it, it'd be even better! Of course, that would probably be out of the question given the artist:musician ratio, but you know..... I think music needs a bigger and better image.....

more competitions? Oh my...! Not that it's not a good idea, but I think there are enough competitions... I mean... eventually it's about programming a game, and I don't see how 100 competitions help that.

Though I do think there could be done something else with music, than the tunecontest. Maybe something like a SoundEffectChallenge, where you create a sound effect of maximum 10 sec, under strict rules... then all sounds can go into 1 huge database, and we have our own sounds-resource ;)

I would also like to see more music competitions, maybe something like creating a real song with lyrics.

As far as AGIF is concerned, it would be good if each competition would be ran by the previous competition winner.

I like this idea.

I like Mini's idea of a sound effects competition. For some reason, sound effects don't really get as much attention as graphics or music. It might be interesting to start with a short WAV, and have competitors turn it into something different, or have people create an original sound. Would anyone else be interested in that?

yes

i would ben

seeing as how i HATE adding soundeffects to my game because it is the longest slowest process under the sun [and moon cause of course i stay up late looking for a good gun shot sound!]

i would like to practice the crafting of them

hahaha.

I DO like the sound effect idea. That would be awesome. It's kinda music, but not quite.

And because it's more general than composing an actual song, or animating an actual sprite or anything, I think there would be Many more responses.

I say we should start this one asap.

Wow! I actually have a good idea? Too much pressure!! lol :P

Is it ok for me, to start the competition? Let's say, duration = 7 days, and the rules would be something like

- Entry is own made wave file
- *.wav 200KB at most (the smaller the better)
- You can only enter ones
- The winner of the previous week selects the winner of that week, to make the new competition.
- All entry's are stored in a database.

Excellent idea.
May I suggest to require the contestants to state whether the sound effect is free to use or not?
Something like License: Free for all (with credit) / Free for non-commercial use

This way someone could collect them for use in an AGS game resource website along with fan-made sprites and stuff much like insta-game.

I don't mind.
If it wasn't for me, you probably wouldn't have thought of it anyway.

Maybe you should post a new competitin idea so I can redeem myself  :)

and also, I like strazer's idea because then everyone can find more "adventure-related" sound effects and use them, rather than just finding more general stuff on a search engine.

Yeah but, it could be *.mp3 right?
I mean, wavs are so huge...

edit: Ok, now I saw a thread in the c&A forum, so i guess i have my answer...
