Apparently the Hurricane Jeanne has provoqued a seaquake which swallowed Tortuga Island... I just can hope this news won't be confirmed, because, apart from the love that such a piratish Island can make feel us to the AGamers, the most important data is that 26,000 people are (hope not "were") living there.
I don't know exactly what I am trying to make with this post, I am not following strictly the "think before you post..." thingie... I don't know why posting this can help. Maybe it is just a claim for comfort words from the AGS fellas... Anyway, seeing how the posts go, maybe we can take some nice conclussions.
Jesus, the entire island? I had no idea! My God!
POST-SHOCK EDIT - This is the sort of thing that makes us realize how trully helpless we are... we can't control Nature, much as we try to, and this sort of catastrophe can happen at any time. Anywhere.
<looks over his shoulder> I'm safe for now, we all are, but how long is "now"?
POST "POST-SHOCK EDIT" EDIT - Sorry, Farlander, no words of comfort from me, as you probably gathered.
Hell, that's awful news! Hope it's not true.
My god! This is terrible. I am genuinely worried :'(
What can be done? A whole island? I feel so helpless.
Where did you hear about that, Farl? I can't find any info on this. I hope it's not true.
Wow, that totally sucks. :(
I've read it in a digital edition of a famous Spanish newspaper... For you who talk spanish, here is the URL:
http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2004/09/21/sociedad/1095755651.html
*** La agencia Haiti-PressNetwork, que cita a Latortue, informó hoy de que se teme incluso que la isla haya podido desaparecer por completo, debido al fuerte oleaje provocado por la tormenta. ***
*** The agency Haiti-pressNetwork, the one Latortue (Haiti's PM) has quoted, informed that it is feared that the Island has completely dissapeared, because of the great waves created by the storm ***
It says that the UN helicopters were going to see how was the situation and they were not able to locate it. That's quite weird, because the Island is BIG. If there have been a seaquake (correct word in English?) the Island should sprout as soon as the wave passes.
EDIT: The new itself in french: http://www.haitipressnetwork.com/news.cfm?articleID=5305
That's actually incredibly spooky. Let's hope they er... find it again. I can't believe I haven't heard of this until now o_O
EDIT - How about some of you people with broadband connections get on one of those satellite webpages where you can look anywhere on earth?
QuoteAlthough there were fears of many more dead on La Tortue island, Deslorges said: ``The government has been in contact with officials on La Tortue. Nothing happened there.''

Still, a lot of people dead in Haiti. Somewhere between 500 and 600.
