I submit to you that this is the coolest thing ever. Ever. Not even evolution is this cool.

Go NUTS with this thing people. I'm finding Mt. Fuji at the moment.
Woah. Awesome!
Dude, this crap rocks!
Yeah, I found this awhile ago, I've got a kick out of it by looking at places i used to live and getting all nostalgic like....
heres me:

You mean the've got maps to australia. When I last looked at this there was pretty much no detail in Aus but plenty in America... Oh and I used up like 15mb of bandwith in a few minutes cos I was at uni... Kinda took up a fair chunk of my quota too. :P
Hehe, I'm a little worried about how much I might be using @_@
I managed to find the hotel I'll be staying at in Tokyo: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=shizuoka&ll=35.689988,139.695389&spn=0.007499,0.010664=k&hl=en
Keio Plaza. It's that tall, thin, "vertical" one.. uh. Looks like two tall, narrow rectangles next to each other.
I live somewhere in the middle of this (where things that appear to be houses are visible)

but its wierd, the very-high details bits in Scotland seem to be nearly entirely randomly placed, for example my house is visible, but central edinburgh isn't!

Some of the city downtown shots are composited from different positions - it's funny to see two groups of buildings angled sharply towards each other.
This is roughly me, in among the patch of letters near the bottom. Tis a small village, so doesn't have much detail.... (//http:////maps.google.com/maps?q=Skelmorlie&ll=55.877495,-4.896984&sll=55.882988,-4.838104&spn=0.041542,0.038795&sspn=0.166168,0.155182=k&hl=en)

My, erm, home town. I actually live about 20 miles outside of "town", in fact, it's outside the city limits, but you might be able to see my house in that picture...
Actually:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Highway%20105%2077327=k
I'm somewhere between 'I' and 'H' I think. You can't zoom in close enought to even see the difference between them though, so that doesn't help much.
I prefer Keyhole:

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=52.084465,5.122547&spn=0.092525,0.101624=k&hl=en
But boy, what crap resolution they have for the Netherlands. I'm in the middle of that gunk somewhere. And yes; this is the highest rez. >:(
Oddly enough keyhole can actually find my street and show a little blob where my house is! Yayness!
Heh google bought out (http://www.google.com/press/pressrel/keyhole.html) Keyhole. Theres a new version coming out soon (http://newrecruit.org/archives/2005/may/googlekeyhole) I think. Oh and microsoft is also going to compete (http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/050523-125208) with Google Earth with their own version called Virtual Earth.
Oh and I found my town. Pity its all blurry: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=-34.498787,150.790529&spn=0.051928,0.074329=k&hl=en

Yes, you can come stalk me now.
Interesting notes: The two buildings behind me are a retirement home and a medical center, respectively.. And across the street from them is my high school. I live much too close to it ;)

Yes, this kind of stuff is really neat and i would like to spend hours just looking at different locations.
I found my house on the map, but it was so tiny i could barely make it out. I will definitely check this out more when i get home from work.
Thank You Kinoko :)
I found my apartment building (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=34.105575,-118.334824&spn=0.003991,0.005933=k&hl=en) using this a while back (and made a post about it in my LiveJournal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/alun_clewe/84516.html))--and when I moved the map around to look at other nearby areas I noticed something very odd.
I live in Hollywood, a few blocks northeast of the Hollywood/Highland complex and southeast of the Hollywood Bowl--and for some reason on the Google maps the Kodak Theatre (part of the Hollywood/Highland complex) is labeled (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=34.102571,-118.340499&spn=0.007499,0.010010=k&hl=en), whereas other, equally noteworthy structures nearby (the Hollywood Bowl (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=34.112538,-118.339727&spn=0.007499,0.010010=k&hl=en), for example) are not.Ã, I can't think of any really good reason why the Kodak Theatre, alone among all the buildings in Hollywood, should be labelled on the map, so I am led to wonder whether this really is a label on the Google map, or whether the Kodak Theatre really does have "Kodak Theatre" painted on its roof in big white letters...

Looks like it's on the building to me - they sensibly painted it so it reads right when the satellite photo is oriented north = up.
There's also a building with "(c) 2005 Google" painted on it a little bit further down. :=
If there's no high-resolution image of your city, have no fear! The coverage of the higher-resolution images is constantly improving. When I first learned about Google Maps, you couldn't even see my home city. When I tried again today, I could clearly make out the roof of my house.
wow this is very cool.
I just wonder how long it generally takes for them to cover new areas.
I like occasionally checking in at Google Sightseeing
http://www.googlesightseeing.com
They post lots of famous places, weird things (possible UFOs [yeah right], Area 51, really big graffiti), and lots of other interesting stuff that you can check out via Google maps.
And here's my city in Okinawa: Sashiki (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=26.178017,127.788591&spn=0.042658,0.084457&z=3=k&hl=en) Though they haven't made a high res version of Okinawa yet. But you can see the "U" shape of Sashiki around this little bay. The green parts (the only parts where it isn't solid city) are the sides of the mountains that surround my little town. I live on the West side of the "U," just a few blocks from the bay.

So, YakSpit you drive every morning 3 hours to get to work? Atleast that seems like a pretty big distance! (Compared to Gilbot, atleast)
It must not update often, those fields behind my house aren't green anymore, they've been houses for a long time now...I remember the days when it was fields..*sniff sniff* good times man, good times...
Hehe but but but I can't drive to work! (I have no driving license)
And getting to work with MTR (our underground railway system) costs me 10 minutes each trip, though it's just 1 station from home to work (and indeed my home tower and the office are both just above MTR entrance) I still need to walk up and down, from one end of a station to another, etc. which wastes half of the time.
Walking there cost me only 15 minutes, which's about 1 km worth of distance.

Well yes, Mark.. We'd all assume the satelites aren't powerful enough to show a small cardboard box along the river. But yes, the fields next to it are pretty and COULD count as your home too..
That (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Garching,Germany&ll=48.263744,11.671515&spn=0.006630,0.012295=k&hl=en)'s the Garching Uni Campus (Dependance of the TU München). The large "ribbed" building on the upper left is the mechanical engineering faculty (where I study...)
The round thing farther to the right of it is an experimental nuclear reactor (*winks with third eye*)...

Actually, the Google Maps satellite images include much of Spain, too. I lived in Spain for two years, and yesterday I decided to see if I could look in Google Maps at the places I had lived there. Unfortunately, though, detailed satellite images of two of the four cities I lived in (Fuengirola (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=36.546021,-4.634085&spn=0.059996,0.080080=k&hl=en) and Ceuta (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.891132,-5.314465&spn=0.059996,0.080080=k&hl=en)) aren't available there--but, while the page you linked to does show Fuengirola in much more detail, it has even less detail on Ceuta than Google Maps. I guess detailed satellite images of Ceuta (the Monte Hacho part, anyway) just aren't available for some reason...

Have fun! It's just a beta version now, and it's streaming the data a bit slow, but I think that may be because I'm using through the business firewall.

Ah, cool.
Google just made it FREE, too!
Just heard about this earlier today, and have been playing with it for hours now. Man, is it amazing! With terrain elevation data, so you can actually see the landscapes in front of you. I looked out at the view from the house where I grew up, on the other side of the world, then jumped across the ocean to look at the courtyards at my old university.
The awesomeness of this thing defies words. And look what's next[/utl]!
I'm all giddy. (http://www.siliconvalleywatcher.com/mt/archives/2005/06/scoop_stick_you.php)
I zoomed down at my house and didn't see my car in Google Earth, but then looked at where i work and i saw my car (i think it's mine, since the zoom was very blurry). I know these images have to be quite old because changes in my city aren't updated yet.
But, alot of fun to mess around with.
Well, they have to be at least 9 months old because none of the new development behind my place has started yet. I wonder when they'll update them?
It's just a matter of when the satelites are over your city and if the satelite controller people decide to take a picture and index it.
I remember reading in a news article about the site that the images range from spankin' new to around three years old. I can date the picture of the apartment building I lived in last year to be 13 to 16 months old since there is no grass surrounding the development and that is when they put in the new sodding... Can't see if my car's there or not. I always parked under a tree. :(
I'm sure they're focusing more on getting hi-res for the rest of the world rather than updating parts that are already hi-res. I'm hoping that they get hi-res of my city here in Okinawa. I want to use this technology for a fun class about America and my hometown, and the kids will certainly want to see where they live in Sashiki as well.
Don't know if somebody already posted this, but I think it's too damn cool ... (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Plant+42+in+Palmdale,+California&ll=34.637382,-118.082020&spn=0.005397,0.007832=k&hl=en)
It's Jesus!

That's pretty cool, it looks like some drunktnuc has added thaeir own image, but it's probably just natural selection
It doesn't work right with Boise. The only thing that is right is Bronco Stadium at Boise State, but everything else is all wrong.
Thats because Boise isnt real at all, were both just figments of our own imagination....
Really though, it is funny that there is a pretty detailed map of Emmett, and nothing on Boise....it just kinda disapears around hwy 15 I think....
Google is the coolest. Do they ever stop getting cooler?

And if you zoom all the way in, you can make an important scientific discovery!!
But it's incomplete. I've searched everywhere and I can't quite find my new place of employment. (http://www.google.com/jobs/lunar_job.html)
Haha thats awesome! The full zoom is the best.
I was just doing some mucking around with Google Earth to see what places around the world were at the same Latitude as my place in Sydney, approx: "33 degrees 44 minutes 10.89 seconds" south of the equator.
Heading out East I quite comfortably pass over the top of New Zealand
South America
- just south of Santiago, Chile
- just north of Buenos Aires, Argentina
Africa
- halfway between Cape Town & Atlantis in South Africa
and that about raps up the Southern Hemisphere as far as places with names on Google Earth to reference from.
I also had a look at the equivalent latitude North of the equator (33 degrees 44 minutes 10.89 seconds) as there is more land mass up there
Japan
- pretty much in line with these cities, Koga, Nogata, Yukuhashi
Iraq
- Bagdad
Europe
- Pretty much passes europe completely underneath through the Mediterranean Sea until it hits Africa
Africa
- ad-Dar-al-Bayda, Morocco
It was easier to be more specific in North America as there is better coverage there and more names of places, malls, etc to get references from
North America
- On the east coast- Myrtle Beach, South Carolina - and this is pretty much at the exact equivalent latitude
- Atlanta, Georgia - pretty much in the centre of the city
- just north of Phoenix
- On the west coast - Seal Beach, California, just South of LA, the beach directly south of Long Beach - exact equivalent Latitude
It's a pretty pointless excercise, but it's fun using Google Earth to find out trivial stuff about the world
I live about 5 miles from Ft. Lauderdale airport (FLL).
When flying back from Michigan last week I was able to see my home as we were coming in for the landing.
It was awesome! I've never been able to do that before. Sure, I could pick out the high-ways and such, but actually pin-pointing my house? No way. But it looked just like Google Earth and I spotted it AND my truck in my parking spot!
Just thought I'd share ...
Bet you felt like a Hawk, eh? I tried pinpointing the resort town and famed Al Capone hideout town of South Haven on my way into O'hare. I think I saw it, but I'm not sure. Airplanes are fun! :-p
