Title: Non-American Members: Do you have Toys R Us stores in your country/region?
Post by: poc301 on Wed 03/06/2009 14:20:25
For Murran Chronicles #3 there is a store that the player will need to frequent in order to speak with a person of great importance.  It is a Gaelic shop selling gifts, novelties, etc...

I wanted to name this store something along the lines of Gaelic R Us, which is in reference to the toy store Toys R Us.  Before I did this, I wanted to make sure the reference wouldn't be lost on all non-American players of the game..  I know the toy store chain is nation-wide here in the states, but I don't know about outside our little country here.

So my question to all non-US residents is: Do you have Toys R Us in your countries?  If not, have you heard of it before, and would you get a reference like the one above?

Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen a Toy 'R Us here (not a real one, anyway), but yeah, I'd get the reference. I mean...it is referenced a lot- in games, movies, etc. Heck, there was a Bots 'R Us in Space Quest, I think.

Even if I didn't (or someone didn't), I'm sure it wouldn't really matter. Aside from the fact that Gaelic is an adjective (unless you are talking about the language?), not a noun, like toys...so Gaelic R Us sounds a little weird. But makes sense, I guess.

Yes, I know it isn't a noun :)  I was going for the adjective version.  It's more a silly/goofy type thing.

Thanks Babar and Gilbet.

Heh BTW I remembered in SQ1 (VGA SCI remade, not sure about the original) there was a spoof called Droid 'B'-US, so this is not an uncommon target to make fun of.

Droids, Bots, what's the diff?

I think they even took some sort of legal action against them because of that.

Here's a list of countries where Toys R Us stores can be found
That's a really accurate list because "Toys R Us" will indeed stop in the Netherlands and will indeed be transformed into "ToysXL"

Yeah, there are a few Toys R Us store here and there :P I've seen them in the UK at least, and know of something like 1200 stores outside the US, which is more than there are in the US apparently (just off the top of my head).

Most funniest accidental said thing I heard all day, and that on the day that one of my colleagues told me he had to go home to play with his new pussy (cat).

Disco, you should have posted one of your nudes.

I most likely was up to no good :P I am not supposed to take photos or video in there (company policy) but always find ways or reasons to bypass those. In fact, I shall take my camera tonight and see what kind of thrills can be had :D

As for nudes, try this recent thread (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=37838.msg497363#msg497363).

Hahaha, you're some kind of exhibitionist, aren't you?  You should dress / paint yourself like those pics when you go into work tonight, and THEN take some pictures :)

No. He shouldn't.  Disco's lovely as he is.  The shirt makes him look rather dapper.

And if I had kids, I'd totally let him be the cool mad uncle.

...and of course that gag in all its variant forms is (c) Mrs Slocombe, circa 1974 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Are_you_being_served_%3F#Characteristics) ;D
