Title: Nostalgia time: Future Conflict for Windows
Post by: Pumaman on Mon 08/05/2006 21:00:29
For those 1 of you that were around here back in the days of the dosuser website, you may remember a Command & Conquer rip-off that I wrote, called Future Conflict.

Well, in a bout of nostalgia a couple of weeks ago, I found the old source code and decided to port it to Windows.

So, without further ado, I present:

Yes, it's a bit rubbish -- in particular the graphics, the sound and the AI (so er, the whole game then I guess) but still, it's a bit of a laugh. Apart from running on Windows it's unchanged from the original game 8 years ago.

CJ, you're not allowed to post here! It's against the rules!!!

Future Conflict is C.R.A.P., you should port AC to Window$ instead, and the DOS game pak!

BEST GAME EVER. ;D

Clearly, do you guys see all the ags references? like the roger/larry-looking army, the early ags-like pathfinding, the gui buttons, the font, point + click!111.

Best of all: the voices. I'd like to cast that guy in one of my games.  :=

Heh, it was quite cool. Reminds me many of my own efforts to create a RTS.

...

But how about implementing higher resolution, put up a competition for graphics (among talented AGSers) and turn it into a collective masterpiece? Open source, even maybe?

I guess you probably wouldn't like that idea, it's your game and you have nostalgic ties with it.

Still, with the skills of people around here, it could be turned into something extremely great, IMHO.

If we go to high res, I'll gladly lend my little soldier to the project, as Sektor seems skilled enough to make his game without any help.  :D

Now, all CJ needs to do is to complete his RTSGS, so thre's no need to attemp to create a RTS with AGS any more.

YOU wrote Future Conflicts, Chris?!

I don't know why, but I found this game years and years ago while searching around for Command&Conquer-related stuff, downloaded it and tried to play it. It's still floating around on my harddrive... Crazy... I think my computer is full of Chris-Jones-stuff without me knowing.

This is most excellent. I have one more game to get beaten in by a last millenium AI :=

And dkh, I'd be interested in the DOS version, if you don't mind sharing it.

I bet AGS come around as a way to distract everyone, thus letting CJ remain as Teh Undisputed RTS King.

Hehe, it would be cool to revive it with new graphics, sounds, etc; or even for me to release the code as open source.

However, when I was porting it I had some trouble due to the appalling state of the source code; it really isn't fit for human consumption. If I was to resume work on the project I'd probably want to rewrite most of it anyway, and to be honest it's not something I have time for.

I was playing it for a few minutes and my brother walked in and he said: "Is that command and conquer?"

No joke.

Nice game, CJ, especially considering its age and indie status. The AI had no problem kicking my ass, either :)  and the pathfinding reminds me of that in Sierra classics.

So, what's next, RTSGS?

Affirmative!

Nice game Chris, I'm impressed!

I cleared the screen and shot the little guys, but I really don't know what to do not. Still, you were definitely onto something there :) Great stuff.

EDIT: Now all my .txt files have a tank as their logo... mad!
