Title: Once again, I need help choosing a domain name!
Post by: TerranRich on Thu 17/03/2005 04:40:33
I am unhappy with my current host, Sonoma Hosting. Although I only pay $5 a month for 1GB of web space and unlimited bandwidth (and yes it's unlimited, I'm up to almost 50GB now halfway through the month because of wrestling themes that I share on another board). The thing is, they won't return my emails about upgrading space (yes I need more than 1GB now). And they're going under new management and are therefore getting rid of all eBay subscriptions that were purchased.

So, I'm switching. I've found a great web host that charges $1 and change per month for 1GB of space and 10GB/mo. bandwidth ($5.07 per month for 4GB/40GB, which is what I'm getting) and only $9.95 a year for a domain name (or I could go with GoDaddy.com, but I digress).

Bsaically, I need a new domain name, because I got my current domain name (www.terran-x.com) through Sonoma Hosting, and I've already cancelled. I was thinking of the following untaken names:

• TerranEx.com (similar to Terran-X, since TerranX is still unavailable)
• Terranopolis.com (hard to type, but distinctive)
• Xylot.com (it just came to me)
• Planet-R.com (for "Rich", would fit into the planet/world motif nicely)

And that's about it. I want a name that I can use as a planet's name for a Flash intro I've been working on, where the visitor is welcomed to it. It WAS going to be "Welcome to Terran-X", but I need more than a gig and am not getting responses. Any other ideas? Should I even stay with the "Terran" theme? Or something out-of-this-world that's easy to remember yet distinctive (along the lines of Xylot). OR, what do you think of the above ideas?

(I'm leaning more toward Planet-R, because it fits into the planet motif very nicely, but that's just me.)

Having no knowledge of the previous site, I would say that of the options you have listedd TerranEx is by far the nicest sounding.  And if you actually have regular visitors, it would also probably be an easier switch.  So that's my worthless vote.

According to my WhoIs query, you're the owner of terran-x.com.
When I switched providers years ago, I simply had to send both the old and my new provider a so-called "KK-Antrag" so the domain would be transferred.
A similar thing should be possible for non-.de domains. I say ask your provider first before getting a new domain name and causing dead links around here.

Well, that's the thing. My provider isn't returning any of my emails. They're not run very well anyway. Until they decide to answer my emails, I'll have to change my domain name.

So no one likes Planet-R eh? ;)

Xylot.com gets my vote man.  Simple and catchy!

Heh, no, I still have enough time to warn you, Hindersh, and InCreator. Thing is, I can't find Hindersh's name anywhere. Is he still around?

TerranEx. Definately cooler.

If you have trouble deciding, go onto IRC and get Rog to choose!

I haven't been to IRC in awhile. What can Rog do now that he couldn't a few months ago? Can he find a cure for cancer yet?

Unfortunalty that he cannot do, but he can make simple choices... Like tell him to choose this or that, and he might say this or that, unpredictable.

Hindersh hasn't been around ever since he became evil. I think he's on a quest to get a life or something

My vote goes for http://www.terransbackdoortreasuretrove.com

We all know you run a underground pr0n site.. What else could fill up a GB?

You could also get a free Terran-x.tk domaim if it's available.

Post by: TerranRich on Fri 18/03/2005 05:12:39
RickJ: Thanks, but I don't really want a .TK domain. :P

LGM: Wrestling themes. 621 of 'em. Takes up about 1.25 GB. :)

I think I'm liking Xylot.com as well. Lot of potential: "Are YOU a Xylot?" (Some kind of advertising.) :p

I'll sit on it for a few more days and hear some more feedback. Thanks!

Are we reading xylot like "zealot" or "Ex Why Lot"

I was thinking "zie - lot". Like an animal or some weird microorganism. :P

Heh. :)

My only concern about getting another host is this:

The month is barely halfway over and I'm over 70GB of bandwidth used up. Damn those wrestling themes! People are being encouraged to browse through my directories, though, so perhaps if I deny access to entire directories in the future, it won't get so high.

Yes.. People will grossly abuse it. You need a sign-up of some kind... Or some way to regulate it. And not to allow hotlinking/=

Xylot sounds like a planet where all the inhabitants are wooden ocelots.
Terranopolis would translate as City of Humans.. or words to that effect.
TerranEx looks a bit hokey.
and Planet-R just seems like a lame cop out in a sci-fi flick, where they couldn't think of a cool name.  It also seems a bit "M-Class Planet" style, where R-Class would be horrible, if it even exists.

Personally I'd go with Xylot, but have you thought about "TerranX.net"? or .org?

I've thought about it, but I'm not an organization, and I guess net would be OK. But I like the ease of remembering .COM addresses. And I like Xylot as well. I think I'll go with it. And LGM, that's a great idea. A simple sign-up thing would be great, but I don't have the code savvy to program a backend-driven sign-up process. It would have to be by email, which I would have to do manually: adding people, regulating the list, etc. I would need to disable hotlinking, as well as disable direct access to directories. As for the sign-up thing, I'll see what I can find that's already coded. :P

Out of interest, what host are you with that allows 70+GB of traffic?

Sonoma Hosting, www.sonomahosting.com. I bid on the service on an eBay auction, where they promised me unlimited bandwidth. I decided to take them up on their offer and for under $5 a month they kept their promise. But they're going under new management and plan on canceling every account they have and making everybody sign up, as well as getting rid of promotion deals, like the one I got. So I'm bailing out while I still can.

LMFAO! $20 a month for 1 GB of space and 5GB of bandwidth. I'm kicking their ass right now until my billing period's over.

I TOLD ya it was a good thing I bailed out now. ;D But who knows... I have the type of luck where I will cancel something and still get a few month's free stuff out of it. it's happened lots of times before.

(Like the time I signed up with American Homeowners Association simply for a free trial to get a free robo-sweeper...and ended up getting THREE of them ;))

I've shopped around extensively for good hosting deals, in various countries. ipowerweb (http://www.ipowerweb.com) are the best I've ever found (apart from the UK provider I used to use, Heart (http://www.heartinternet.co.uk), but they booted me off because one of my scripts broke their server ¬¬). ipowerweb are cheaper than most, and have waaay better bandwidth, database and disk space allocations than anyone else I've found. Rockin'.

I don't get what the big deal is about iPowerWeb.com, seriously. LGM IMed me yesterday and mentioned it. Sure, it's OK, I mean 2GB/50GB for $7.95/mo is OK, but 5GB/50GB for $6.27/mo is even better. ;)

And you can't pay monthly with IPowerWeb. You have to pay at least 3 months in advance. :( Boo. :P

You have to understand how Terran's mind works. He'll readily pay 10 bucks a month for porn.. But when it comes to web-hosting... He's a frickin' miser!

I'd readily pay $20 a month if it was really good.

Erm, I mean...hey! ;)

Xylot it is. I've registered it. To InCreator and Al_Ninio: I'm going to backup everything myself, as a free service to you. :) If you have any immensely large files (such as HUGE videos or MP3s), I'll let you know that you have to re-upload these yourselves. I will also send you both new FTP information.

Hindersh: If you're out there, man, let me know you're still alive and PM me. I'll backup your site as well, but I can't PM you because I can't fiind your name on the members' list.

Wow. OK, well here's to hoping he gets his PM. :P

EVerything has finally been transfered to Xylot.com, although the domain itself isn't active yet. I've placed a placeholder there that basically says "Coming soon" and "Email me".
