It feels about time for the next One Room One Week competition. I'm posting to ask firstly about interest, and secondly about when would be the best time to hold it. The Christmas holidays would be fine for me, but I know a lot of people have things to do over them, how many of you would be interested and available?
I would most certainly be interested in any week over the next month or so, excluding this week obviously.
Please, please, please, do not hold it on the week starting 17-18th. Everytime an OROW starts, it's during some tests of mine, and I hope it won't be the same with this one. The week after that may be troublesome for some because it includes Christmas and all, but if it can't be that one, perhaps the week after that?
/me whines like a kid who's whole life involves AGS and classes
That's the week I planned to hold it, because I'll be in Germany 26-4th and it's best avoiding the few days around Christmas... we can hold it some other time, I don't mind really.
Second week of 2007 or later would suit me best. Have to see how my yet unscheduled but already decided goings settle themselves, though...
Second week of 07 would work ok for me, I'll be in uni, but I will at least be able to run the competition.
I think most people will be starting uni then (I know I am) but that doesn't mean it will be too stressful - it's better to have it at the start of a semester than an end at any rate - people will have less to do for the most part.
christmas period would be a great for me! I'd be well up for it!
Ow. Id rather go for early 2007
I know it sounds counterintuitive, but why not extend OROW over a series of two or three weeks. Anyone who wants to submit states the day they're begining working on their game, and if they don't submit their game in time, they don't qualify. That way we can try and fit OROW into our own schedule, rather than having to worry about someone elses.

Anytime from the 18th of December to the 7th of January would suit me fine.
Also, do you plan on finally setting a theme of some sort or will you just say you will and then forget about it?
OROW's worked just fine before. We just need a date when not only like two people can enter.
OROW! WHOO! \o/
*ahem*
Any date is fine for me.
Are we planning on a loose OROW, like last time, or a theme/restriction based one?
I'm not sure which I prefer. :-\
LimpingFish wanders off, muttering...
I could participate in 1st or 2nd week of January. Fine.
Always dreamed of OROW.
Definitely sometime in January for me.
I can participate any time between now and January 7th, and I'd really like to be able to enter.
I love these completions. I'll probably attempt in it.
Should then there be 2 OROWs in a matter of a few weeks?
The first during the holidays for those who can enter,
and the second in early 2 oh 7, for those who weren't able to enter the first one, or weren't able finish what they planned for the first one.
I don't think it is impossible, especially because it is a one room thing, so its not much thinking involved (unless you are planning a mega spectacle, which you probably won't finish in any of the mentioned dates).
More entries, anyone?
Just a question...
Last OROWs were without any given guides, or rules. Since it has been announced now, most people would normally go on start designing right now! Heck I already PMed somebody ;D!!!! I know the meaning of OROW, but still isn't it by passing this meaning by asking and by this thread?
You really can't do much in a week, with two weeks on your hands you could do a lot more. And if there was a theme this time round what would be the point of telling it forehand? Part of the excitement is in awaiting for the OROW thread to see inside for what wacky guidelines show up.
IIRC the reply to all theme questions last time was "we'll see", and when the day came we saw no theme. Was sort of a step back too, since I hadn't done any thinking in case there was no theme. It's part of the excitement, stop poking around it.
I'd like a theme, but a fairly general one, so that you don't get the situation that all games are pretty much the same. Just make it so that there's a general theme, which gives people something to start with, or maybe a couple of example themes (which, while not technically being guidelines, will still (possibly) inspire people to do them anyway) and then let them do whatever with it.
I'd be against MAGS-like guidelines, like "Make a pirate game with the following inventory items: a wad of spit, a monkey, a monocle and a spade", because that'd be limiting rather than facilitating.
I have no preference as to when it would be, as long as I get to know when it starts ;)
I would like there to be something tying the games together somehow, but I also see OROW as a time to make whatever silly game idea you had but didn't want to spend ages making, so it could restrict some things. So I am undecided about themes at the moment.
Ok, so we'll have it in January, 7-13?
Theme examples would be a good middle road - basically saying 'here's some things you could possibly do, but feel free to deviate from them if you've got a better idea'.
7-13 sounds fine to me :)
You want it to be like MAGS?....
"Here's 10 inventory items. You may use them... or not. It doesn't matter. It can take place at christmas, unless you don't want to."
After careful (minimal) consideration, I believe I would rather not have a theme. I would not, however, be against an actual enforcing of the cardinal OROW rule. That any game submitted should INDEED take place in a single location.
Other than that...
And I just want to bring up that OROW was created to get people to make games that are interesting and don't get over-scoped
the OR bit was to try and curtail people's over-scopeness. I like OROW being of few rules. If you made a game in a week, awesome! Post it and let me play it! I'd also love to do away with the whole competition aspect of OROW because, eh.
BUT THAT'S JUST ME!

So that's a no ;)
LimpingFish: But it's called One Room, One Week for a reason. What do you want, then? As Many Rooms As You Want, One Week? (AMRASYWOW sounds kind of crappy)
I don't think we'd bring back the one location rule, people seem to have a good idea of what is possible in an OROW game now, it worked ok last time.

Voh :P
Scotch: Yeah, but then it's not really an OROW game then, is it? :P
Didn't we have this discussion last time? No it's not really... but we can pretend.

So I'm blind and read so incredibly selectively that I'm attributing opinions to you that are far from yours. What's your point? ;)

A similar guideline to this could do the trick.
Imagine a day in the life of a poor private investigator (on another seeming break).
Or a day in a life of an investigator that belongs to a higher organistion that we explain in the guidelines.
Ockey, don't have to be an investigator ;), but any kind of person with something that we choose will conect them.
Think Fahrenheit... or something like that.
I don't think that in any way will the games be too similar, it can only build up the curiosity of what others made from the (suggested) rules.
Actually as voh mentioned, maybe the rules should be just used as an inspiration.
That's why I'm pro guidelines, because they always play with your imagination and can stop those creative blocks you could have with starting a new project.
Scotch, you're right. I'm just being pedantic. You wish to rob me of my pedantic---ness? :'(
7th-13th is fine with me. :)
EDIT: Hey! We could change the name to One Game, One Week! OGOW! Huh? Huh?!
...
No?...Fine. >:(
OGYW sounds better.
One game, yellow week?
edit: Actually One game, YOUR week!
ha ha. I'm still your number one creative acronomyst. ;)
and yes, 7-13 does sound numerologycally (?) cool.
7-13 is fine with me.
People, stop messing with the OROW concept. Just get ready for it. Nobody's going to cry if your game is two rooms or one room. Make a game! Try stuff! Have fun! Suffer the last-two-day-crunch!
Suffering is fun and rewarding! 7th-13th sounds ok to me too.
I could make a one room game based in a star trek holodeck. :=
Seriously, OROW is all about getting some damn games made. It always works, too, so I say leave well enough alone. As far as the competition element goes, I'm kind of with Eric. As long as you're not in it for the sake of WINNING! then it's just a bit of fun, but I'm really more interested in people commenting on each other's work than looking at a set of numbers that's supposed to represent how people evaluated what you did.
I'll echo on 7-13 being good.
(Man, I feel like listening to some George Crumb right now.)
I'm in it for the sake of winning. :'(
I mean...uh...buhbye!
LimpingFish runs!
Since when is winning EVER optional? >:(
Who said anything about winning? I said WINNING!
As far as the winning aspect, while I agree we should just be making games for satisfaction, having a competion maybe makes people go that extra mile when making their games. That isn't to say people won't make great games, but some people like the idea of competition and really get into it, and while I'm not one of the people, I can see the benefits of it.

Winning an OROW is overrated.
Winning an OROW is the best thing I did in my life.
I am thinking of making a game based on a short story I did in grade 8.
7th till 13th? ;)
Isn't that like, today?
Yes it is! :P
So, the OROV 5 has already started officially?
Let me start working on my game instantly, then... (Too bad I've no idea about what to do.)
No, I can't really run it this week, so it's not. Unless someone else wants to.
Maybe I can run it for this week (and I would release my game outside OROW)? I have got my own server to host the games, setting up the voting page, etc. and have time to play/check all the games. What else is required?
Umm... I'm kind of new to the whole OROW thing. I know it has to have one room, but can I have other rooms for cutscenes/etc.? Also, what do you mean 'hosting the game'? Do I email you the game or post the link or something? Thanks for clearing this up.
When the contest officially starts (which, by the way, I'd also be willing to oversee if people are set on doing it this week) you would make a game in a week.
That's it. That's all the rules.
It's still called "One room one week" but it would be more accurately called "One game one week." The one room rule was originally there to help people keep their designs small so that they could actually finish it in one week, but it's been done away with.
Then at the end of the week, you would email your finished game to whomever is organizing the contest and they would release them all at once. This is to try and keep the games anonymous so that people wouldn't be voting just for their friends (which doesn't seem to ever have actually been a problem, but still it's a good practice).
However, no one has started the contest yet, so don't start making a game yet.
I wouldn't mind it put forwards a week or two, and I'd prefer to know a few days ahead when the thing actually starts...
I propose after the 20th
QuoteI propose after the 20th
I wish you happiness, and demand a slice of the wedding cake.
Actually I am going on a wedding on the 20th, so that's funny in another way as well.
But seriously, let's go with after the 20th
I second that.
As long as it's after the 15th I might be able to enter...
Helm, I command you to STOP MARRYING PEOPLE! You're not a priest :(
Also, I'm not sure if I'll have time to make a game for this OROW.
But I am a priest. A priest... OF SATAN!
I have enough time, and I want to finish a project. So I'm in :)
QuoteBut I am a priest. A priest... OF SATAN!
JUDAS PRIEST! :o
So... how about we all agree on an official start date? I've alread gathered a team (okay, well, one other guy :P) and we are anxious to get underway.
Okay, so it's the 19th. Any idea when it's going to start fur reel? :)
Not currently, no. Anyone else can run it if they want.
