I'm trying to do some basic photoshop stuff and Ive encountered a problem.Ã,  I have an image and I select a color range which i want to put onto a new slide, the problem is when i cut and pastes the range photoshop makes it smaller (maybe its anti aliasing it or trimming it or something).Ã,  How do i get it to cut exactly what i have selected, so it doesnt change a pixel?

Also with the part i do put onto the new layer, when i try to move it it seems to be snapping to certain points of the image, is there a way to turn this snapping off?

What version of Photoshop are you using?

How are you selecting the color range?  Are you using the wand tool?  Or from the menues?  Either way, if you're using anti-aliasing, this is likely to happen.  Because you're pasting the color range onto a different color background and it's going to "blend" it to the new background color.

If you're using the SELECT > Color Range menu option, you'll need to play around with the fuzziness setting.  I understand the use of this tool, but I never use it.  I prefer the wand.

If you're using the wand tool, you can turn off anti-aliasing and up the tolerance to get more of the range.  This might achieve the effect you're after.

Do you have any guide lines on the image?  If so, use CTRL-; to remove them (temporarily) for free movement.  You use CTRL - ; to turn them back on as well. (to permanently remove them; ALT-V-S)

Or you could have your feather setting above 0%, this can remove the sides of the selection you chose.

I managed to get AA off with wand but cant figure out how to do it in color ranges.Ã,  Also when you paste on a new layer is there a way to paste in place, so it still looks the same as the original image but is on a new layer?

Once you've copied the image you want to paste, goto FILE > NEW and it should have already placed the new image size in the dimensions section. Click OK and paste in the new window.

You dont understand what I mean, sorry I'll try to explain it better.  I have an image and i want to cut out a certain color so i can put in on a new layer in the same image, so that essentially i can change that color and put it back in the image.  So what im doing in cutting the color range and pasting it into a new layer on the same image.  When i paste it tho the pase has been shifted down a few pixels and i can't seem to align it right so the image looks whole, there are gaps of missing pixels within it.  So i was wondering if theres a way to paste in flash, like you could in flash mx.

Go to EDIT > PREFERENCES and turn off snap-gridding.

Also, once you've pasted the new layer, instead of using your mouse to drag it, use the cursor keys for better precision.

You can also select the transparent area, and then go Edit -> Paste Into.  But then it does some crazy things to that layer so I prefer to Paste & move.

It's only been a couple of days, so I guess digging this up isn't that bad...

I have a photoshop problem that is probably very simple... How can I use the line tool all on one layer, without it automatically making a new layer every time I draw a new line?

That's not really a line tool, that's a vector path tool.

Just use a hard brush and click once, hold shift and then move the mouse where you want the line to end and click again

if you hold shift and keep clicking it will keep drawing from the end of one line to the next.

Or you could - as with all the shape tools - set it to it's "direct" setting, like this:

Just switch on the third button (as in the picture). Not too sure about the proper name for this setting ("direct" seems to describe it adequately). This works: no new layers, but the lines (or shapes) are drawn directly. Which also means you can't edit them afterwards.

Ah, thanks. No wonder I couldn't find "line tool" in the help search :(
