Has anyone seen it yet!!!??? It is GREAT! I was in fear of cheesy dialog ("try wearing a corset"), bad FX, and all that...but nope! It was one of the funnest movies I have seen in a VERY long time.
I'm suprised there hasn't been talk about it here yet. Don't you Monkey Island people like pirates!?
arrrrghhh,
-junc
I really really want to see it. It looks great.
Johnny Depp makes Urkel's dick explode.
I'm actually really looking forward to seeing it! It's always been 1 of (if not my most) favorite rides at Disney World. I was worried about Disney trying to make it into a movie but at least they rated it PG-13 ...
Did you know this was Disney's first PG-13 movie ever?
I'm glad you liked it!!
dm
I thought that their studios made remember the titains. that was pg-13
Disney also own Touchstone and Miramax -- and at least one of their movies has to be PG.
Trapazoid, you bastard -- that pic made me laugh so hard, tea came out my nose!
I believe this is the first PG-13 movie released directly from Disney, instead of one of their subset companies.
DGMacphee: Haw haw.
You'd think that Urkel would be in alot of pain there, but he looks happy enough.
He's used to it. Not only Johnny Depp, but skiing, lobsters, electricity, the barber shop, Latin music, video games, Nutella, motorcycles, books about birds, peaches, copper, infomercials, and the Shroud of Turin all make Urkel's dick explode.
I'll die if I don't get to see it, it looks completely AWESOME but it's not out here yet. Of course any movie based on monkey island Pirates of the Caribbean HAS to be good! :D :D :D
I hate my parents. They snuck, possibly even sneaked out last night to see it, without telling their precious chil'en. I want to see Johnny Depp all pirated up. I don't think any parts of my anatomy will explode, though.
Ah, but explode in what sense?
..umm...
Anyway, I think he's referring to the flame and carnage that bestruck Urkel.
Touchstone and Miramax have lots of R rated movies, but this is the first movie released under the actual name of Disney that grabbed a PG-13 rating.
Hey Junc, did it have the castle with the sparks going over it at the beginning? Like in the front of their cartoons or Pixar movies?
dm
Bah - it doesn't matter if Disney or one of it's other companies release the movie as PG-13 -- It's still Disney and all of it is EVIL.
So says this website:
http://www.capalert.com/sexedabcdisney/dizfactsheet.htm
And here's their Christian review of Pirates of the Caribbean (read it cause it's very unintentially funny):
http://www.capalert.com/capreports/piratesofthecaribbean.htm
I like the fact that the film has "excessive breast exposure, repeatedly" -- I'm so going to see it now just to see some curves!
Side note -- do you REALLY know what homosexuals really do? -- This website knows everything apparently:
http://www.capalert.com/sexedabcdisney/whathomosdo.htm
In fact, from the sounds of it, the CAP website knows more about homosexuality than homosexuals do.
Gay Dude reading article: Whoa! We do that? I got to try that on Steve sometime!
I never though Capalert was so bad... It's silly and oversensitive, but rarely very hateful. Even in that homosexuality article he was sure to stress that he had no beef with the actual homosexuals, just their sexuality.
On the Religious Wacko meter, Capalert gets a 3. It goes up to 11.
Capalert opens all pages in new windows.
That's evil.
I've never found the "I don't hate gays, just what they do" excuse that strong, especially when countered by gays with "my sexuality is part of who I am, so myself and my sexuality are inseperable"
still, it's an effort to appear tolerant in words if not in thought or action.
Still, it's a web page. It's all words. Capalert at least makes an effort not to sound like a raving lunatic.
Back to the topic...
The odd things is all the listed things that gays and lesbians do could also be done by a straight couple.
To further give momentum to this tangent, I like the way they list "Abbreviation of Christmas without "Christ"" as an offense.
One of the best movies I've seen in a very long time, and definately in my favorites list.
It made me proud to be a pirate.
So... Do you people believe that Lucas will make a Monkey Island film? Many poeple thought it deppended on teh success of Pirates of the Caribbean...
If Pirates of the Caribbean is as good as I've heard, then maybe we don't need a Monkey Island movie. Part of the reason I wanted a MI movie is because there weren't enough good pirate films. PotC just might fill the need.
I'd rather we get a Sam and Max movie or a Grim Fandango movie.
Well, I guess Satan is coming to visit, because this capalert website warned us against the following unholy obscenities, all present in the movie:
-bird defecation on shoulder
-slappings
-storm peril at sea
-inappropriate touch
I have got to see this movie, even if it means me going to hell in a handbasket. :)
OH man, it was such a great movie. I went opening night and couldnt stop talking about it all night afterwards. Reviewers around where I live gave it a 3 and a half stars out of 4. very very good. i was a bit frightened about the 'try wearing a corset' line but its soo fast you can barely notice it. really this is a brilliant moive and johnny deep's characterization of his role is fantastic.
and wasnt beauty and the beast the first pg 13 movie from disney? i dunno, i read that somewhere
AHhhhhh!!!! Who cares if Disney is evil and all that? Come on, that arguement is about as exciting as Microsoft $ucks arguements.
Anyway, Darth Mandarb: No. Nothing. No LOGO. I found that very odd. No logo for ANY company. No real opening credits to speak of. I think names on the screen as the scene opened up, off in the corner, but to tell you the truth I can't even remember seeing them. I think they are downplaying the Disney thing a "little" bit. I didn't know it was by Disney until I went to the website after seeing the movie.
Honestly, if anyone is not seeing this movie because it was made by Disney...you...are...a...stupid-head.
I want to go see it again.
The corset thing. It would have been bad, except that they built up to it. It was a joke that actually worked, it played an important part in the movie. I was shocked to see that. So many movies today have such crap jokes.
Oh, the PG-13 thing, that's not a factoid someone pulled out of their butt...I'm pretty sure it's on the website or something.
arrrr,
-junc
yeah, the logo thing was kinda odd. they just threw on the title of the movie and then it barely faded away cool..... and thats all i remembered seeing... i dont even remember seeing names. the people i went with were like... okay... that was odd.
i really hope people arent seeing this on the pretense of the country bears movie or because its disney. this is a true quality film
I just saw it. It's most excellent. Best movie I've seen in a while.
EDIT, furthermore, wether it does well not, I think this movie's going to be a cult classic in several years. Really really kick ass movie.
But the big question remains... is there insult sword-fighting?
I'll probably see it next week.
No, but the swordfighting scenes are great enough to make up for the lack of insults.
actually, now that i think about it... when the first meeting between the two main chars occur, there may be some insults going through... they just dont rhyme in case you were wondering.

Well, they don't rhyme because they're not on a ship. Ship combat is different from land combat, remember.
I was a little dissapointed at the small amount of insults, but appreciated that they did have some.
well even the swordfights aren't that great, and that corset joke fell flat in the audience i was watching it with, it was a pretty good movie tho. not perfect, but then what can you expect out of hollywood these days. Still go see it, but don't expect it to be AMAZING.
be forewarned, it is a "Jerry Bruckheimer Film"

But that is good. Remember Crimson Tide?
I think he also made The Rock, which was a great film.
On another note about Religion and gays:
www.Godhatesfags.com (http://www.godhatesfags.com)
I guess I might be going to see this then. The movie, that is.
I must put in my three cents and state that I actually liked the "Try wearing a corsette" line, as well as the build up, because I HAVE worn a corsette, and yeah, it is pain. There is squishings and pokings of things that should neither be squished nor poked. Gotta love that whalebone! The chick was actually wearing one of the most comfortable corsettes that I've seen (Elizabethan effigy style, front and back lacing. Comparatively lots of give to it) Then again, I doubt anyone actually cares.
I loooooooooved this movie. It has made me realize that my local film reviewer is nuts, because he didn't like it. This movie had muskets, pirates, skeletons, curses, Orlando Bloom, sword fights, a monkey, hangings, guys with long hair, AWESOME costumes, and many other wonderful things. This has been added to my "Gotta get it on DVD" list.

he also made Kangaroo Jack.
POTC more than cancels Kangaroo Jack.
In fact, I doubt Bruckheimer had much creative input into this. Let's all get on our knees and thank Misters Verbinski, Elliot, Rossio, and Depp o'course. :)
Ok let's look of some Jerry's recent work shall we???
KangarooJack (2002)
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Coyote Ugly (2000)
Gone in 60 Secs (2000)
Armageddon (1998)
Do i really need to make a snide comment about these films, or do they speak for themselves?
Hehe, he's a producer, not an artist.
So he's a businessman, and he knows all too well Barnum's comments on the taste of the general public.
Well, he may be a succesful businessman, but judging by Taryuu's list he has a poo taste in movies :)

umm besides kangaroo jack, whats wrong with the others. they were all almost blockbusters, if not ones themselves.
I just bought the game for gameboy, and it sounds really good. I'll let you know what I think about the game.
dude in my opinion all those movies sucked. big time.
have you ever seen tora! tora! tora!? now there's a movie about pearl harbour.
and as for coyote ugly, c'mon now.
gone in 60 secs - sucked - but not as bad as armageddon. i don't even know where to start disembowling that movie. that has to be the topic of another thread.
just because the general public will eat up whatever holllywood and and a multimillion dollar advertising campaign will shit out at them, is no reason to stop striving to create anything better.
anyway i'm getting off topic, to sum up, jerey bruckheimer used to make decent action films, but now you have to drink away half of your brain cells to enjoy what he craps out at you.
maybe, but have you seen this one. one of the best hollywood produced movies in awhile.
I'm amazed at how close-minded people are.
"Disney sucks."
"Jerry Bruckheimer sucks."
Who cares. It's still a good movie, a great movie. Wake up and stop letting mass culture brain wash you. I admit I do the same thing a lot, but if people say something is good, I at least give it a chance.
If someone could point out something wrong with the "movie" and not who made it or something else completely unrelated to the quality of the movie then maybe I could deal with it.
I honestly don't understand how someone could see this movie and just shrug it off.
Hollywood does produce such crap anymore. It was nice to be blown away for a change.
later,
-junc
actually, i know something wrong with the movie.
SPOILER ALERT
Spoiler
In the scene near the beginning, our favorite Captain has just saved the girl from drowning. He is cuffed and then uses them against the girl to save his life against her throat. He moves up the platform that they are near and swings around for a bit. Then he is able to finally stop swining and hooks his chains from his cuffs around the rope, yet he is not yet uncuffed on either wrist so as far as I saw, which this happens really fast, its not possible from the way he gets off the rope
Yes, its petty, but I hope someone can prove me wrong.
Oh, come on! The answer is soooo obvious...
Spoiler
it's because he's Captain Jack Sparrow!
Spoiler
Actually, I noticed that and forgot about it...on purpose.

-junc
yo what the dilly yo??
i said i liked it fools!
Quoteit was a pretty good movie tho
and by the way saying that the person responsible for the movie has no effect on it's outcome is kinda silly....
I don't think all of that was directed at you. However, outside of the line you quoted the rest of your original post was fairly negative and at least gave me the impression that you just kind of shrugged it off....
I also didn't say that the person responsible for the movie had no affect on its outcome. It should just have no affect on your decision to see it or like it. I agree that the movies you listed are crap. I also think this is one of the best movies I've seen come out of hollywood in a very long time.
It's just that since I started this thread a few people have been talking about Bruckheimer and Disney and not really the movie.
eh,
-junc
aaight,
cool dude, I'm still not going to see bad boys 2 ;)
Bad Boys II?
Surely that's a joke. It's a joke isn't it?
They had Easy Rider 2 in preproduction a while ago so....
are you serious?? oh get ready to be blown away.
