Title: Playing AVI's in Windows XP
Post by: Jockstrap on Sat 17/04/2004 04:48:35
We used to have Windows ME on the computer and the AVI files I had downloaded worked fine. Then we upgraded to Windows XP and none of my AVI's work. Well, they sorta work. There's sound but no picture. Has anyone else had similar problems? If so, how did you fix it? God I hate Windows....

Have you reinstalled all the codecs, like DivX?

Yup, you'll need the proper codecs to view your porn...

Well, I downloaded three codecs and ran them but that didn't help at all.

And it's not porn. It's John Carpenter's The Fog.

I just checked and it's saying all the video codecs are working (including DivX). So I don't know what's going on.

And I'm not lying. I don't download video porn.

EDIT: Very strange. Clock.avi works but none of my other avi's work.

EDIT: Okay, MOST of my avi's don't work. And some of them only work in certain programs. I opened one file in WMP and it didn't work properly, but then when I opened it in Winamp it worked fine.

EDIT: Maybe some of  them  ARE bad avi's (some work, others don't)  but they were all working fine on Windows ME.

if you try and run it does it not say "This won't show properly unless you have this codec" if not try running it in the divx player, it always tells me what codecs i need

When in doubt play it in this http://www.videolan.org/.

If it doesn't work, something's rotton to the core.

And since you're using windows, you couldn't have got the Divx codec without the DivX player, so either it's on your harddrive, or you didn't reinstall all the codecs as suggested.
DivX- http://www.divx.com/

Yeah, okay. I really don't know much about anything. I just know that it used to work with ME and now it doesn't work with XP. But right now I'm at divx.com downloading stuff....and it's taking a very, very long time....

If anyone else has codec problems, google for a program with the slightly inappropriate name "GSpot" and download it. It should tell you what codec is needed if the file doesn't play.
Saved my video enjoyment at least half a dozen times. ;D

GSpot made my computer freeze many many times and even made my cd-rom drive funny in th end...
For me Codec Pack All in one from
http://www.codecpack.com
worked fine, without installing the gspot. It even stopped some of my porn...er... cultural movie to be upside down. I hate watching movies standing on my hands...

hey, i had a problem with my soundcard not liking quicktime movies a whirel back, and ill tell you what jiggery pock hit the spot...

Real One player!

it works wonders, it plays (i think) every kind of media file. Video or Audio. And it has a great feature which tells you about the band's that your listening to... even if you downloaded it.... i mean borrowed it of a friend.

This coulda been solved alot faster if you listened to Las Naranjas right away.. DivX is the most popular codec, and since you mentioned it was "The Fog" it most likely IS DivX

Just thought I'd point that out.

Oh, and, btw..

You boast about your 100th post and this is the first time I've seen you.. Dang.. You need to settle down.

I've been here since this new forum was started (and a year before that), and I've only made about 950 posts.  You've been here, what, 3 months?

Anyways.. I don't want to sound like an asshole anymore and get the "Look Ma, I'm Hardcore" picture posted again (which it probably will). But I just wanted to put my two cents in.

I DID listen to Las Naranjas right away. I checked on the computer which codecs were installed and it told me DivX was there and was working properly. So it was the computer's fault not mine. And I wasn't boasting I was just being a little silly, I was happy that I had got my AVI's working properly. Now lets please not turn this thread into a 'lets pick on the n00b's thread'.

I wasn't picking on you. n00b bashing is for elitest bastards/

Welcome to AGS and congrats on getting your AVI's to play.
