Title: PLEASE please help, what's the name of that cartoon...
Post by: Rui 'Trovatore' Pires on Sat 12/03/2005 01:40:05
It's very important to me, because it's one of the three cartoons that most influenced my childhood (Secret of NIMH and The Last Unicorn being the others), but I... just... can't remember the name!

It's like a sequel to Snow White, only non-Disney and much, much darker in tone. Let's see what I remember... there were the seven dwarfettes (the cousins of the original dwarves, or something), the brother of the evil queen (who is the bad guy), a smoking owl and a bat who tried to be reeeeeaaall bad but ended up just being real funny, and a strange being all huddled in clothes, very very ugly, who turns out to be the enchanted prince.

I know how it sounds, but from what I remember, it IS pretty damn good. Of course, I was about 8 at the time, or younger. But I really want to try and find it again, but... what's the NAME? I think it was something like "The New Adventures of Snow White", but that's just probably the literal trabslation  of the Portuguese title, which, as sometimes happens, is quite a distance from the ORIGINAL title, since "The New Adventures of Snow White" seems to be a porn movie. :P

the only thing i've been able to find is Snow White: A Tale Of Terror, but it isn't a cartoon and was released in 1997 so it probably isn't what you're looking for, but here's the imdb link anyhow http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0119227/

Holy CRAP! That thing's description sounds AWFUL!... So awful that I want to see it!! Then I saw the picture and I'm SURE that I saw a copy of it either at Wal-Mart or at the local video rental store. Hoo boy...

Thanks for this, man.

how about this. it took place on a far away island, and all the animals were actually hybrids of 2 animals. the main one was a moose and some kind of seal/dolphin thing. its teal and purple too. i used to have a stuffed animal of it, and i dont know what happened to it. ive only seen like 2 episodes, but i do remember that all the animals were hybrids. It may have been a brittish cartoon that was put on over in the U.S.

The Wuzzles? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088643/)

Don't ask why I remember this, I never even watched the bloody show. Even so, I now have the theme tune (one line anyway) going round my head.

Now 'The Gummi Bears', there was a cartoon.

Did a search for a cartoon with "Bumble Lion", found several links.. looks like it was the "Wuzzels"... Most links I found were crap "fan pages" ala tripod, geocities, etc.. with forced popups, annoying blaring theme music, sloppy broken-link graphics, etc.. but, below is a "blurb" I found about it:

September 14: in 1985, Disney makes its first venture into ongoing
children's television animation with "The Wuzzles" on CBS. Each
character an odd hybrid of two animals (Elleroo, Bumble-lion,
Hoppopotamus, etc.), the Wuzzles are all the only animal of their own
species on the wonderful island of Wuz. And although few of them can
fly, all have a small set of wings on their backs. Among the voices
having way too much fun on the 13 episode series are Stan Freberg,
along with "Laugh-In's" JoAnne Worley and Henry Gibson. The main
characters are all readily available in plush toy versions from
Hasbro.

Scummbuddy: Hehe, I'm glad someone else remembers that show (er, except that you forgot it). I LOVED the Wuzzles when I was a kid.

Never heard of the Snow White thing, but the Last Unicorn is one of my super-special childhood shows. Did you know they're making a live-action movie? I was horrified at first but it actually looks pretty good (at least, it did a few months ago when I last looked into it). They were actually going to get Christopher Lee and Angela Landsbury to play the characters they originally did voices for. Very excellent in my books.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it! The unicorn I saw was beautiful! Is the project still on, then? Lovely news!

OK, I got a misremembered cartoon as well, if someone is able to help. It was an anime cartoon, starring some princess, who was also some sort of superhero. However, everyone (in the cartoon) thought that the superhero was a guy. The princess used a sword and wore a cloth mask to disguise herself (kind of like Zorro I suppose)

 >:( Hey.... Are you insulting He-man? I think he is even on these forums somewhere. Another childhood favourite.
BY THE POWER OF GREYSKULL!
I...HAVE...POWERRRRRR!

Umm...so no, despite the fact that my childhood has been blurred by constant nabbing of beer, I am pretty sure He-man was not the same as this cartoon

Yay me...my 500th post....I wonder if that means anything

hm...
I'm pretty shure it wasn't sailormoon.
What about princess mononoke. She used a dager but she wasn't wearing a mask. Or she wasn't mistaken for a man either. So I'm lost here. Any other tips  ;)

I can't help but do this (sorry Babar) - what about some old anime-ish cartoon where there were huge monsters that were slug-like in appearance? They weren't the enemy, though - in fact, I think they lived with humans in some sort of harmony. I have a half-clear image of the main character (female) "riding" one of them. ALso a "dark" cartoon, japanese style somewhat.

Babar: The thing that instantly springs to mind is an Osamu Tezuka cartoon (same guy that did Kimba, Astro Boy, etc). I was never aware it was shown outside of Japan personally, so I never knew the English title.

I just did some searching, and here we go: Princess Knight
(1967-1968 by Mushi Productions, aka Ribbon No Kishi.
Based on the Manga publication of 1953-56. 52 episodes)

I've never seen the show but I love the manga. Here's a picture: http://en.tezuka.co.jp/manga/backlist/ri01/images/ri01_00203_l.jpg

She also (along with a lot of characters including my all time favourite - Blackjack) made  cameo appearance in an apisode of Astro Boy where he goes back in time.

Does this sound like it?

Rui: I'm afraid it rings no bells with me.

Ahh, thanks Ashen, you've restored to me my past. 1985! wow, i was 2 when it started.. how on earth did I remember that?  and Eggie, youre too young to know that show.. nice try. You just got lucky with your guess of Bumble-lion.... every hybrid cartoon animal show has a bumble-lion.

(hmm, i dont know why I said earlier that I only saw 2 episodes. I watched it a lot. I dont know what I was thinking...)

Could that be "Warriors of the Wind"? If so, that IS anime, from the same makers (Miyazaki & stuidio Ghibli) as "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away". However, the version released in the '80s was a horribly edited down and chopped up version. Disney has JUST (as in, within the past couple weeks) rereleased a restored version under its original title "Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind". (I think, I'm typing this from memory and I haven't actually seen it yet.)

And The Last Unicorn and The Secret of NIMH are my two all-time favorite cartoons. They can both still get me choked up when I watch 'em. [goes to find NiMH dvd.]

HoN

Oh my God... I think it IS Warriors of the Wind! I have to look for a trailer, but so far the images line up! Just to make sure - the scenario I describe rings no bells for any OTHER films? I seem to remember a dramatic scene with one such "slug", I think it was dying, or maybe it was helping someone HUMAN who was dying, or something...

EDIT - http://pt.altavista.com/image/results?tlb=1&fr=tb&ienc=utf8&q=Nausicaa The 1st three screenies gave it away, that IS it! Thank you VERY much!

Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind, don't watch the anime, read the manga...

Viktor: I've yet to meet anyone who hasn't seen The Muppet Show, or at least heard of it. I watched it religiously when I was a kid and I cried when it was cancelled.

Jim Henson is God.

Just like to mention that "The Muppet's Christmas Carol" is probably the best Xmas Carol adaptation I've ever seen. Superb stuff.

Couldn't agree more. I'm a hard fan of the Gummi Bears. It's really sad they where kinda banned from Disney because some people claimed they promoted alcoholism or drugs. :P
