Really, its not that regimented.  Most of the 'groups' working on large-scale games are already pretty complete.  We've tried to 'force' a group, just taking several people and all agreeing to work on one project at a time, so we'd finish everyone's pet projects in due time.  It didn't really work out so well.  It just feels forced, so gradually we just didn't make any more progress.

There are a ton of individuals working on their own ideas.  I personally am working on a fantasy game called Alrek with a buddy, KQ8 remake on my own, MacGyver, and a couple others I'd probably be welcome to return to, with two different groups.

Maybe just hang around the forums, put up stuff on the Crits Lounge (for criticism, and perhaps offer advice) compete in the competitions, and other things.  You mentioned that you're a sprite artist, interested mostly in fantasy games.   Do you have any examples?  I'd love to see them, since I also prefer fantasy style games, in reasonably sierra-esque styles.
