Yeah, are we able to have polls on these forums, or have they been disabled or something. Cos we got like the little pics down the bottom of the page that show that its possible.
I dont really have a need to create a poll, i'm just curious, you know.
I asked this a while ago. Apparently people abused them, and so Chris got rid of them.
Ok, fair enough
Well... Put the polls back, monitor them, and cut the balls
of those who abuses them with a rusty tablespoon.
That would teach them a lesson...
What if females abuse them???
what are you implying?
hey jimi, i dont know if you know, but girls dont have balls
polls would be good if only moderators were allowed to make them, otherwise people would start up stupid polls about anything and everything...
I like that idea... and how about just in competitions and activities forum...
They could be useful in their place... in the critics lounge, competitions, feature requests for AGS so CJ could concentrate on the most desired features... just avoiding the gen forum so we don't have polls about which AGS'er has the sexiest backside (Mr. Colossal, of course..I've seen drawings).
how could they be usefull? how often do people need to know the anonymous results of a poll here?
on critics lounge? not really, i think things are doing alright without them
in competitions? i don't really see the need for it, if you have a thread that needs to be voted on, just handle it in the thread
and seriously, since we already know which AGSer already has the sexiest backside... what else is there to poll?
eric
frontside?
Ah well... don't get known faults started ever again...
Mr. C lives to argue with me. That twitty sod. I just envision a leading post for each compo that has a nice little graph showing the standings... easy to get the results that way, anonymous (no he voted for me, so I'll vote for him syndrome), and a beautiful thing to a statistician, general lover of numbers or those who merely like pretty colors. If such a graphing system isn't possible, then to hell with it I say.
That unless we can guarantee it's not misused, there're some unhappy issues happened in the old forums...
we could have it so that a mod must check the topic before it is posted...
The polls were abused when they were in place. To say now that the community has matured past a point where those polls wouldn't be abused would be an utter lie.
HOWEVER (and I use capital letters for emphasis)
If frivilous polls were deleted immediatly by a moderator, then they could be useful. I don't think you could limit them to a certain forum become some polls might apply to a certain forum.
HOWEVER (another twist)
What poll isn't frivilous.
HOWEVER (twisty twisty)
If the poll does require anonymity, where knowing who votes for one option might, in turn, potentially hurt anothers feelings, I can then see their use.
HOWEVER
I really do see polls as pointless on these forums. The only thing I can see them being there are for a laugh, or if CJ wants to know what we think is more important on his "things to do" list. So really, CJ, should be the only one with this power. And if that doesn't convince you, then the fact that you can make your own poll slap it on a website, should make up for this. If a poll is that important to someone, you do not have to limit yourself to this message board.
The polls abuse forces more important discussion down. When they were in place there was a point where the page was literally filled with nothing but polls. And I'm sorry to those who thought that knowing what soda product was better was impertinent to this forum. None of the polls really had anything to contribute, and thus polls were removed. I think that if they were back in place that there use would go much the same way.

Heh no matter what the argument is, I'm in fact feeling a bit sorry about the abuse use of the poll function in the old forums, if I didn't make the suggestion to enable it in teh first place...
gah leave the polls away - you always get people who double post because they are at a compter at work, at home, at a friend's place, at the library
it just aint fair :)
I'm not a big fan of polls.
They don't serve any major purpose.
If you want someone's opinion, just start a new post and people can answer in any way they want to without conforming to a pre-defined set of answers.
Thank you.
I think we should have a poll on whether to return polls to the forums.
Damn recursion.
Surley they would help if they could only be started my mods, and only put in the competions/activities forum.
Then again, people would post over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again (I hate people who repeat) just to make sure that their faveroute would win....we need CJ's oppinion.
Perhaps...
we should have a poll about polls?

Edit: This post was not intentionally plaguerized, merely delayed by a less-than adequate laptop keyboard and interference with my wi-fi connection.
Yakspit, read the post two posts avove yours.
Sneaky thief. ;)
"Surley they would help if they could only be started my mods, and only put in the competions/activities forum."
no way, how many polls can we endure where Mods starts one about how we have to guess how big his penis is or where we have to guess how many times a given length of string would wrap around his penis or we'd have to vote on who would like to see his penis
eric
Making Obligatory mods/m0ds jokes since 1942
Seven-hundred, forty-eight thousand, five-hundred and six. Then, I'd definately want him to stop. Oh, by the way, who's seen Mod's penis recently? It's gone missing again.
It's been hidden in teh Blue Cup. ;D
Yes, polls used to be enabled on these forums.
Yes, people felt the urge to post polls about random topics such as "Do you prefer Coca-cola or Pepsi?", which are utterly irrelevant and serve no real purpose.
If you want to see what happens when polls are enabled, I invite you to look here: http://pub57.ezboard.com/froyalquestforumsfrm14
The problem with polls is that 99% of the time, nobody actually cares what the result of the poll is. They can be useful when there is a specific question, and knowing the answer is actually going to be useful. But too often somebody starts a poll for no real reason at all.
As DG says, if you have a question, just write it as a normal post, which gives people the opportunity to justify their answers rather than just ticking a box.
And eric makes a good point too ;)
Well, I think that Cj's example was good but it was a poll form. If moderators have to check them I dont think it would be a problem... I have an idea, lets have a poll! :P
ok, that poll-poll joke has been done to death
ghostmaker = 1 vote against poll's
total votes this poll = 1
How about just limiting making polls, let's say one in month?
But then whom would get it? I say have a mod make it/check it or none at all...
how about if we asked if we were aloud to have a poll, and if the moderator thought it was apropriate, he's change the thread into a poll. And if he didn't, then he deletes the thread?
I have to say, I really don't understand what this obsession with polls is.
Somebody give me one good example of a good use for a poll that needs to be done via the Poll system, rather than just a normal post asking for replies?
Polls:
Leet people: "We want polls! We will be so mature and handle them with great care! We won't abuse them!"
CJ: "Ah well, all right".
Member one: "I want to start the first poll and get attention. I just need to come up with a good subject."
Member two: "If he could start a poll, I wanna start one too. Better jump on the bandwagon before it gets removed again. "
Member three "Look at those stupid polls. I think I will start one just to parody the silly subjects already started."
Member four: "Does he think he's funny with that joke-poll? This is a funny joke-poll."
Member five: "Bah, the poll-system really went out of hand. I think I will start a poll just to prove how badly the system works."
New member who hasn't read the poll debate: "Neat, a poll-function. Let's ask people if they prefer crab-fish or shrimps."
etc.
Andail hit the nail on the head. That's exactly how it would happen. We would get pissed off, and in another year we'd bring them back. Let's just not do polls. A moderator isn't a special person with the ability to suddenly make an important poll. Why would endowing (sp?) him with this power do anything at all? Polls just don't serve a constructive use, for the most part.

I can't even believe this discussion has gone on this long. Even without a bad track record, why would anyone actually need them? Don't answer that, please.

Welcome to the Department of Redundany Department.
Tell me that's a Firesign theatre reference. Tell me tell me tell me!!
"Your housing, food and insecurity will be guaranteed by your department of redundancy department and the national guard.
Bottles: They're gunna surround us!
Don't panic. Jobs is on the way. And DON'T take off your shoes."
Yep. I may've inadvertantly posted something similar to that other guy but at least I used a good reference.
Polls? Why do we need 'em? They just look cool. That's a very good reason. And I'll do custom graphics for it... the longer the picture of Mod's penis is, the higher the opinion! Yay! Really, I was just playing the Devil's advocate since I have been using the forums for somewhere around 4 years off and on and haven't yet seen any polls here. I think we need to institute them so they can be taken away. We're like children. If I didn't give my kids stuff, I'd have nothing to take away when they're bad. If I didn't give it back eventually, I'd be taking limbs pretty soon. Besides, Mr. Colossal wants polls back. His mom told me so... and she's cute... so.. her opinion matters... dammit, lock this thread already.
