Is this normal?... I'm suspicious... Possible virus?
Hi there... I have just found a folder in my computer files (in the same window as my 'Documents', 'Pictures', 'Downloads', etc folders). The folder was called {924b7121-fd22-485b-adb2-ac19e7f5d6b5} (including wobbly brackets)...
The weird thing is that when I tried to click on it an alert came up telling me
"You don't currently have permission to access to this folder.
Click continue to get access to this folder."
How can I not have access to this folder... I'm the only user and administrator of my laptop...
And the language of that ( "don't" and "get access" ) seems to me a little bit unrealistic for something official... especially as when I click continue I get the dark screen asking me if I want to allow something called "Edit Security", supposedly a Windows thing, to access my computer.
Am I beng paranoid or could something be amiss?
I haven't given the thing permision yet because I don't trust it.
Does anyone know what it might be and if it is okay?
I doubt it's a virus. I could be wrong, but it sounds like some application is only using temporary space. Try closing all running applications (or alternatively restart your computer, preferably not starting any programs that auto-run with windows) and see if it's still there. If it is, try accessing it.
I also doubt very much that its a virus. Certainly if I wrote a virus I wouldn't stick it in My Documents (if that's the place you're referring to) with a strange name like that. As Paper Carnival says its likely to be some form of temporary file, either left over from a something you downloaded and clicked 'open' rather than 'save' to, or an installer, or yeah, something a currently running program is doing. It may well just disappear when you restart your computer.
I just ran a search of my PC for similar files and folder names and got 211 results, although admittedly none in the root of My Documents. Make a restore point if you're really worried, then open it up and have a look what's inside
hmm well i did have a problem last week where I installed a windows update like normal but the next time i booted my computer it wouldnt boot, so i had to put it back to a restore point... this fixed the problem, except for the fact that i was being asked to install this windows update again.... the same thing happened three times over the next few days and then things seemed to sort themselves out...
Do you think this thing might be a remnant from that problem?... in which case should I try to run it and se what happens?
It wasn't quite in 'My Documents', but in the folder before that:
C:\Users\Stuart\{924b7121-fd22-485b-adb2-ac19e7f5d6b5}
Windows updates are causing huge amounts of problems at the moment, Microsoft are trying to get them out on a monthly cycle and aren't testing them properly. I work in an IT support company and we get PCs that have broken because of updates all the time.
I wouldn't *run* anything in the folder, but opening the folder and having a look at the contents might give you some idea of what it is
Okay... I bit the bullet and opened the folder...
There are two items, both called NX6000m - one is a "Security Catalogue" and the other is a "Setup Information" file... means nothing to me...
A guy on Yahoo! Answers said:
QuoteIt is the MSI installer for a Windows update file. You are denied permissions to it because if you delete it then the update can not be reloaded (as it is already installed) and more importantly it can not be uninstalled.
Does what he's saying sound right to you?...

[EDIT]
Ahaaaaaaaa
I just googled "nx6000m" and one of the results led to a driver download for a Microsoft Lifecam webcam...... it probably has something to do wth the fact that I installed one of those on my computer about a week agao... juts before the weird shit with the Windows Updates started happening...
Damn... that means a webcam has fucked my computer up and happened with my last laptop... I hate webcams.

[Edit 2]
ooops sorry, I pressed 'Reply with Quote' instead of 'Modify'
Yeah, that all sounds about right. You could go into add/remove programs, check the show updates option then look for an update to do with your webcam, remove it, run windows update and see if it wants you to install it again, but maybe messing around with windows updates isn't a great idea. Depends how much it bothers you, but it sounds safe to just ignore it
Yeh I think I'll leave it as it is. The computer seems to be behaving itself now so I wouldn't want to stir any trouble.
Cheers for your help $1
