Hello boys and girls! Just thought I'd share this freeware game I've been digging latley. It's called Armagetron, and it's based on the light cycle races in the classic sci-fi Tron. The graphics are excellent for such a small download and you can race people over the net. I highly recommend this one.
You can get it for free here: http://armagetron.sourceforge.net/tron.html
and here asre some screenshots:
I hope some of you get a kick out of this.
C.
Looks pretty funky, I'm off to check it out.
Nice ;D I always liked the "Tron" movie and thought it would be cool to play a game that did the "Light Cycles" justice.
It looks like this game does a great job of capturing the "Tron Movie" feel, putting you right in the action. Installing the "moviepack" made the game even look better. Only problem I had was when I went to try an dInternet game, the game crashed, locked up my computer and I had to force a reboot of my system :-\ Other than than, the game rawks, especially considering it's Free too.
heh, played online, hectic and fun :D

Its cool, although it is hard online when you have a high ping, and you don't see that the person who you were chasing turned and you died :(
yeah, I find its kinda laggy online most of the time, people seem to go accross their own tails and turn stupidly fast and stuff like that.
What a coincidence. I just got the dvd from Tron at work as a late new years gift, and now I found out about this game.
Cool.

What's with the whole 'I've seen this ages ago' etc comments? So what? He didn't post 'OMG NEW GAME', and if you had seen it, why hadn't you brought it to our attention before? :p

Where would it end if everyone posted about every good freeware game we know, just to make sure it's been posted and brought to everyone attention? Hmmm, come to think of it, I actually like that idea. ;)
Perhaps there should be a Favourite-non-adventure-freeware-games-recommendation-thread... So, on the risk of going off-topic, even though this one already has a nice generic title, do you already know
Seiklus (http://www.autofish.net/clysm/games/seiklus/)?

not a bad idea. i`m still a fan of "3d racer", the game of DemoQuest2 .... ;D
The best Pacman remake I've found (http://www.neave.com/games/pacman/pacman_external.swf)
The guy had to take the game off his site, but I dug around and found the renamed file. ;D
Kick ass post, by the way.
Nice! That's an awesome version of Pac Man. Much better than the fan remakes I've suffered through.
Here are free non adventures I have played the most that everyone-has-probably-played-but-still-deserve-posting-in-the-sticky:
Noctis (http://anywherebb.com/noctis.html)
Noctis is a massive, eerie, lonely, 3d space exploration game.Ã, You can fly to any star you see in the sky, land on any planet or moon and walk around... and that's it.Ã, Not really a "game" but worth experiencing.Ã, Totally unique software 3d engine.
Liero (http://www.sis.no/johnsen/liero133.htm) (Link changed, external link was blocked before)
If someone is sitting next to me and we want to play multiplayer, I love to play this.Ã, No remake has done it justice.
ADOM (http://www.loonygames.com/content/1.28/feat/files/adomg10.zip)
Angband (http://www.loonygames.com/content/1.28/feat/files/angband-283-win.zip)
Nethack (http://www.loonygames.com/content/1.28/feat/files/nh322NTi.zip)
And other roguelikes. They can be repetitive, and you need to use your imagination with the "graphics" but I often find myself playing them. The idea of totally randomly generated worlds is quite cool, try one if you haven't.
Seiklus is nice, I might have linked that if it wasn't already.
I'd like to be linked to some more good games please.
The Leiro link just gave me an attepmted trojan, and a lot of spyware
Space Taxi 2 (Free Playable Demo made by an Independent game developer) :
If you liked the original Space Taxi (back in the old Commodore 64 days), then you'll enjoy this modern version. The demo lets you play about the first half-a-dozen levels or so.Ã, Anyways, I really enjoy it.
http://www.twilightgames.com/spacetaxi/spacetaxi_info.htm
And if you're looking for some more nostalgic gaming action, check out the remake of the classic "Sword of Fargoal" dungeon hacking game... ahhh, the memoriesÃ, ;D
http://squidfighter.sourceforge.net/fargoal/
For some more free dungeon-hacking fun, you could check out "Falcon's Eye" which is a modernized version of "Nethack".
http://www.hut.fi/~jtpelto2/nethack.html
You can see some screenshots of that game at:
http://www.hut.fi/~jtpelto2/nhfeatures.html#SCREENSHOTS
Also, if you were a fan of the old "Mario-land" type of games, then you'll probably enjoy a very good and free version called "Mario Forever":
http://www.buzg.scene.pl/MD/index.php?module=subjects&func=viewpage&pageid=25
Here's another little fun webpage based game I like to play sometimes (you'll need Shockwave Flash installed though) is "SnowFight 3D" :
http://www.miniclip.com/snowfight.htm
Leopold, a fantasy turn-based strategy game. Think Stratego meets RPG...
http://catluck.com/leopold/
America's Army, I think thats kind of self explanatory
Another in the non-game type game.
Orbiter - A free space flight simulator
http://www.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/~martins/orbit/orbit.html
Hard as hell to understand. I never even got the shuttle off of earth successfully (the real shuttle not the glider). Extremely realistic and lots of fun to dink around with.
Oh, and for those of you that don't know or missed the thread. Metal Gear Solid is freeware and available for download on Underdogs. The download (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=5057) was pretty slow a while back, might still be.

It CAN'T be freeware.. not unless Konami releases it themselves.
Don't know if this is the place to post it, since I'm advertising our own site, but we have some freeware non-adventure games available at http://www.freehostz.com/darctyde/downloads.htm.
There are 3 RPGs and 1 action game available for download.

You can download it at: http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm
Now if only they release Daggerfall as freeware...
Ahh.. good old Liero
But there is another game that i have found be AWESOME, it's Minebomber sometimes, all of my botheres would play it in 4 player on one computer (NOTE you need DOS to be able to play it)

Enjoyable x10.
Well my new addiction is Freespace 2, which is now avalible on HotUD as abandonware, I guess even
the sourcecode has been released. If you haven't played this space sim, you really should,
it's one of the best space combat sims I've ever played.
The version on HotUD is a CD rip, so it's hinky to get it working and it's missing voice,
music and some of the movies, but these are avalible from other sources,
and I'll soon be hosting the voice and files on my site to spread the wealth.
I
highly recommend this one. If you get it and can't make it work, PM, IM, or email me
and I'll walk you through how to get it to work on your Win XP box. To get the core game files (219mb),
just do a quick search on Home of the Under Dogs, and get the Bit Torrent download.
Also, this game comes with a mission maker, so you can make your own custom campaigns.
Another up-shot of this is that I've found hundreds of user made campaigns and
full mods for free on the internet (again get in touch with me for links and what-not)
that seem well thought out and very nicely made.
And now for some eye candy yummyness:
there are dozens of ships that you get to fly... I've barely scratched the surface
(http://geek.j2solutions.net/shots/freespace2.jpg)
this is how the "menu" system works, compleate with nifty animations
(http://www.nukewinter.com/screenshots/PC/freespace2-large2.jpg)
now THATS what I'm talking about !
you should see what happens when those beam weapons hit your little fighter
All in all, this game gets a
10 out of 10 in my book, the missions are challanging,
you required to think as well as fight your way through them.
The storyline branches and your performance is rewarded. Download it today!

I've ruined the productivity of the lab I work for by introducing my colleagues this little game:
http://aluminumangel.org/attack/
It's Crack Attack, a game based on a SNES ROM (Block Attack, I think it's called). You must put the blocks in lines of 3 or more blocks, and it's quite addictive, more if you play against an opponent (only in LAN, on the Internet is quite difficult to play). It was quite hilarious, as everyone started to play and tried to challenge me, I always won, and I got to the point I didn't want to play anymore but people still insisted... :-P I guess you can humilliate other people too with this game :-)
Hm, it seems to me that you all don't know that much freeware games, alone because some games posted here are not freeware at all!! So, I post some of my favourites here!
I won't post all now because I don't have the time for this!!
Well, there is this university where you can learn everything about making games called Digipen (http://www.digipen.edu).
Some of their projects turn out great, many not. These are my favorites:
Ta-ta Mahatta (http://www.renegadeware.com/TaTaMahatta/index.htm)
Mantis (http://www.digipen.edu/programs/gallery/games/2001.games.html#Mantis) (maybe oe of the best freeware games I ever played, but one of the least known also!)
Vektor Space (http://www.vektorspace.com/)
Scrapped (http://www.digipen.edu/programs/gallery/games/2001.games.html#Scrapped)
Geode (http://www.digipen.edu/programs/gallery/games/2001.games.html#Geode)
Bontago (http://www.digipen.edu/programs/gallery/games/websites/Bontago)
RS-6 (http://www.digipen.edu/programs/gallery/games/websites/RS6/)
Also, nobody should miss the side-scrolling shooter Entrance Gate (http://gamehippo.com/search/search_title_1_07020f34f46c29a9161d35d8cb4ee9f4.shtml) (the normal website seems to be down in the moment, it is www.vrealware.com)
Hey, Cleks.. I managed to find Freespace: The Great War? Is it good aswell, or do you not know?

awesome games, except the lunar lander remake, can't figure out how to play it. But the other games are kick ass
Well hey.. Didn't notice that post was two months old.. Silly me
No, what I mean is that Clex isn't around at the moment, not how old his posting was. He was traveling across country and who knows when he'll be back.
Ohhhh :-p lol, gotcha..'
Anyways, I must re-emphasise how great Dokutsu Monogatari (http://agtp.romhack.net/doukutsu.html) is...
YES.
Doukutsu Monogatari is just... amazing.
A bit short, but oh-so-great.
I must play it again some time soon.
Short? It takes 6 hours to complete even if you know what you're doin!
First, a game that takes 6 hours to complete is short.
Second, it took me much less than that.
But hey, it's an incredible game anyway.
Didja get the alternate endings and weapons?
I... Um...
I, well...
No.
But I will now!
(Still a short game from a not-a-"get-every-possible-thing-in-the-game"-gamer perspective).
I just finished extracting the soundtrack with the OrgView.exe program, if anyone is interested. I have no place to allow such traffic... Just PM me and we'll find a way to get it to you. For reference, it's 25.6MB big.
Mind you, I didn't get all of the songs, cause A. I'm lazy, and B. Some of them were too short (I combined several that were really good) or they aren't very interesting (fo me) to listen to. I actually only made this for myself, but if anyone wants it I'm more than glad to send it..
Actually there're lots of secrets in that game, lots of things can be done in alternative ways (with slightly different results, probably) too. So the game has replay values, not for me yet, as I sucksksksk in action games and I paused playing it since I reached that last cave (not that hidden one).
As shown in some of the pages (http://happytown.orahoo.com/doukutumonogatari/) (Japanese, sorry). Some people even made a walkthrough (http://wray.umu.cc/index.html) to that last hidden dungeon.

Anyway I downloaded it, never played it, but I saw this post and thought - oh sweet Japanese game, I know Japanese, right up my alley right? So - Download - Pick Save Directory - Uh-oh, want to overwrite? WTF? Oh yes, already have this game. HAHAHA. Whaaaaaa? Totally unexpected.

Not quite sure if it qualifies as a game as such, but:
Furcadia http://www.furcadia.com/
An on-line community of "animal-people" called furres. Furcadia is a magical world where the animals walk and talk like people. Join in at any level of intensity, from just chatting to strict in-character roleplay. Completely free to download and join, no subscription required. Safe for older children under adult supervision (there are "R-rated" areas and, sadly, always a small risk of running into someone unpleasant).
The organisers work hard to keep things focused on a magical fantasy experience for all. This is NOT a kinky "furry" or bestiality site. The community is monitored as closely as any on-line community can be, and disruptive or unpleasant people are dealt with.

Listen kid, when a game is still under copyright and they haven't given the okay to make it freeware, it's warez. When a game is still for sale and you can download it for free, that's STEALING.
I don't care how your rationalize it, but it is all very illegal.
Here's a link to a fairly popular game I made last year called WordTrix 2.0. Basically it's Tetris but with letters, where you form words from the official Scrabble dictionary. The game was downloaded over 30,000 times so far, and it has a very active online high score table.

Source code was released by Microsoft, the old community picked it up and ran with it. They are very close to releasing their own version of the old Allegiance Zone (from the Zone run by MS) soon.
The attitude is fairly intense at times, and a lot of people give up before they give it a chance, and the game isn't for everyone, but if you have the ability to not take yourself or other people very seriously at times, then check it out. :)
Rubies of Eventide (http://www.eventide.net/home.html) A good little fre mmorpg. It is small, but the community is quite large. Nice people, good game.

Pretty cool RPG game called Avalon. I got it off of gamehippo.com. Really funny and cool, but very hard (starting with 100 gold? come on!)
This thread is alive? Then it needs Moorhuhn Jagd! I'm pretty sure it's freeware.
That Plasma Pong is so cool! Somebody please make a plasma-plugin for AGS! :D
Freeware? Ok. Sorry if I can't resist a shameless plug, but have I mentioned SubTerra yet?
http://geocities.com/p_simoons/
There's this mine, you see. There's lots of gems there, waiting unhappily fortheir rightful owners to come and dig them up. It goes without saying thatthose gems would be much happier in your pockets.
SubTerra has 450+ challenging levels, some which reward smarts and some whichrequire lightning reflexes. It features a huge variety of tricky traps, creatures, and power-ups, guaranteeing plenty of variety on the way down.Meet the munchkin, evil skull and duplicator!
Also featuring demo recording, on-line help and a level editor with a yearly design contest.
Seek And Dread (http://www.seekanddread.de) is a Map-based Online Shooter along the lines of Counter-Strike. It is played from a top-view perspective and is a pretty awesome game. There are a myriad of maps, scenarios and weapons, and it is pretty enjoyable. Now, I realise this may sound a little like Spam, but really, this is a fun game! Anyone on the forums already play??
Cheers,
Fluke.
