I recently had a power surge. My internet didnt work for like 10 mins until i unpluged and pluged it back in. Is there any chance that damage was dont to my computer? I have a power surgge compliant powerbar which my comp is plugged in to, and a good power supply is in my computer, if so how can i tell what happened.
Check the fuse on your power strip, if its broken, then your probably safe, if its in one peice still, dont worry.
So Lost...when IS it time to worry? When you comp is on fire? :P
If your computer is working fine now without problems, then chances are everything is okay with it.
But, to protect your computer against future power-interruptions and/or power spikes, you might consider getting a UPS (Uninterupptable Power Supply), which gives your computer clean even power, and will keep your system running even during a power-outage (depending on the UPS, but for example, it could give you an extra 15 minutes of power, giving you plenty of time to save any work and properly shut off your computer untill power is restored).
UPS's are usually sold in the same places you can buy computer systems at. It's a worthwhile investment.
Well, he said it was working, so I am under the impression nothing is wrong. Fuse should break if it was a big enough surge.
I had a lightning strike nearby earlier this year (or late last year) and I'd turned off and unplugged everything during it.
except I haddn't unplugged the cable modem from the wall
when I restarted my computer it didn't boot up
It had fried the network card connected to the cable modem, after I removed the card, the computer could boot up again and nothing else was wrong. I had a spare network card so everything was sweet.
I had a UPS at one stage, It saved me on a few occasions, but when there's a serious thunderstorm, it's best still to turn everything off and unplug everything.
If you turn off and forget to unplug, it means shit when lightning strikes nearby power lines,
just some helpful tips
