Title: Quake 3 Arena - SERVER OPEN NOW!
Post by: mozza on Mon 19/12/2005 09:32:23
There is a game out called Quake 3 Arena and it has been out for a fair while now. If anyone has this game we could set up, using this thread, a schedule of games for us AGSers to play in and have a bit of fun away from the adventure games. Don't get me wrong, I love adventure games, but something different is nice too. So I want your ideas and a list of people with Q3 willing and able to participate.
Just an idea still, but it could be something.
Thanks.

this sounds like a neat idea!
I Don't own Q3:A, but i have a friend who would be more than willing to give me access for such an event.
Nice idea.
PS: And, while we're at it, why not have a THUG2 (some of you may know from some of my other threads that this is my favourite game ) online? We could have proper photos and have 16( i think that's the limit ) AGSers riding around on skateboards and tagging?

Not yet, but I spote the game for 6.90 GBP in amazon.co.uk, which certainly qualitifes for buying!

That would be highly interesting!

Note: Is there any way of hiding this thread from LJUBI? They are going to kill us!

Tiny EDIT: I have played Quake 2 at least a douzen times at all difficulty levels... I actually love spenting some time by just killing...people...

Thanks Mozza

It's great to see some people interested already, and I will update my first post to include any AGSers that are willing to play. Please just make it very clear that you are interested in playing or I might miss you.
BTW Nikolas it is a great game and is very much worth it.
Thanks.

EDIT: Are you out Flukeblake?

one good thing to do might be to size up each others' connections and specs to see who will make the better host (unless ofcourse somebody has access to a dedicated server... which, if there's servery stuff for mac, i might be able to arrange with a friend of mine)...
okay, so i have a downstream of 2mb and upstream of 256k, Athlon64 3400+ with 1gb of ram.

Me no got Quake.

My monitor is too small for counter strike, I have to wait for my cursor to hang over a character till the text appears so I know whether to shoot or not, cos I can't see or they are!

Also, the only time I played it, my ally was getting shot so I took aim with my pistol and shot the enemy in the head. BLAM! Then the ally turned around, started firing at me, (With no friendly fire it was pointless) and then I was kicked outta the game. WTF?

Yes, not Team Arena.
It would be horribly laggy, but if you want you could give it a shot.

BOYD: My pc is crap with 800Mhz and 128mb RAM. I have 512k/128k broadband connection I think, but I don't have a clue how to run a server. I'm currently trying to find out, asking around while playing Q3 online. I think to run a server with enough power etc. for our group we would probably need a dedicated server with a really fast internet connection.

[lgm]: was that a joke about your dad or is he genuinely interested?

hajo: would you play?

My dad is addicted to FPS games.. And he constantly plays Quake 3 Arena. He never plays multiplayer, though, because even after years of playing he still SUCKS. :-p

But yes, it's a fairly serious offer.

I haven't played Q3 / UT for quite some time....
I went to some small LAN parties when I was about 16 :) It was fun at that time!

I'd love a game once again! let me know if there is a server!

I don't think I can organise other games because I don't have them all. Or haven't even heard of them.
Also, if your name has a "(?)" beside it, eg:

please either PM me or edit your last post saying that you are interested by saying something like: "I am interested." or something I can easily interpret.
Thanks.

EDIT: It is probably just easier if you PM me.

I have been looking around and will post the IP address of an empty server. Or if anyone can set up a server themselves would also be good.

Nikolas: Sad, sad story. Oh well. Hopefully this will continue and become a regular occurence. We might even be able to run our own server for as long as we want!
Title: Re: Quake 3 Arena

Game up and running with the latest update, etc.

A private server would be excellent!

Post by: mozza on Wed 21/12/2005 06:26:20
I can get a private server up and running in a few hours. It will be called AGS Server. Server should be up at 10:00am Wednesday 21 December GMT.
To convert your time and find out how long it will be go here (http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc).

Be there if you can and I will try to be there.
I will try to find out the IP as soon as possible.

If there are any problems I will post here but if the server is not up at that time you can assume it won't be ready until I say so in here.
Thanks.

Get ready to frag!
Title: Re: Quake 3 Arena
Post by: esper on Wed 21/12/2005 07:09:39
I would play, but I'm in the Arizona Time Zone, which is GMT-7 -DST. Yes... -DST is a cool little thing I just invented that means we don't have daylight savings time o.0!

I still might be able to, but I don't have any of your friggin' games! I have Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2003 (which version do you guys mean by UT?). I also have Counterstrike (I have never played online... only in LAN parties at college, so I don't understand the whole "everybody who plays CS is an imbecile" thing), Half Life, and Battlefield 1942.

With all us gamers here, there have got to be some people that like stuff other than shoot-em-ups. I've got Battle For Middle Earth, War of the Ring, Empire Earth, and Stronghold Crusader, as well, and for MMORPG's, I play World of Warcraft on Lightninghoof server. There are a whole lot of games we could be playing together.

Hey we just tryed Q3 online and it was good with 6 players.

So see you in few hours.

But be gentle because we don't play FPS at all and we only played Q3 few times after we bought it.

And one thing can we first gather on the center of the map.And see eachother after that we will frag

Klan256 (The swedish JB clan I'm in  :) ) has a nice smooth server with less lagg (atleast if you live in Europe).

Ask him
Title: Re: Quake 3 Arena
Post by: Corey on Wed 21/12/2005 18:31:16
Ok I asked him and it's alright if we use his server. Now comes the next problem:

what gametype and stuff do you guys want??

- Tournament Deathmatch
- Tournament TeamGame
- Assault
- Domination
- Capture the flag/Bunnytrack (CTF maps with obstacals in order to capture the flag)
- Last man Standing
- Bunnytrack VMP2 (bunnytrack with the mod for recs and anti boosting)
- Jailbreak

of course there are also the normal UT mutators... If anyone would prefere one post a head

btw: be aware of the fact that the owner uses the server for personal use also so you might have a lagg spike once in a while.

Title: Re: Quake 3 Arena
Post by: BOYD1981 on Wed 21/12/2005 21:05:08
i think just plain vanilla deathmatch will be fine, with translocators off ofcourse, so there's no wimping out  ;)

I can't play ET on my computer until i get a new graphics card, as the on board one that game with my mother board sucks.  I'll be conveniently recieving the card as a christmas present, so everything works out...

Just PMed Mozza -- the server runs 1.30, when the latest version (what you probably have) of Quake III Arena is 1.32
Title: Re: Quake 3 Arena
Post by: mozza on Fri 23/12/2005 08:15:42
Ok, I have sorted out some problems with Geoffkhan and after interrogating him I realised that we all don't have the same version. Well duh mozza. So I have updated my version to the latest and I strongly recommend you update yours here (http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quake/quake3-arena/index.php?game_section=updates). It is the id website.

Now with that version you should find that there will be a lot of servers so try just going specify and entering the ip address first but if that doesn't work try waiting until the name pops up.

The server is called "MODESTOLAN.COM QUAKE" and the ip is 66.52.66.40.
The server is open now and is not private it is just one I picked. It is just normal deathmatch and I'll be there.
Title: Re: Quake 3 Arena
Post by: sportyjay on Fri 23/12/2005 08:22:21
The IP doesn't work, so just wait for it to show up on the multiplayer menu.
Title: Re: Quake 3 Arena
Post by: mozza on Fri 23/12/2005 08:45:31
You will probably have to look for it in the multiplayer menu as sportyjay has said. I won't be there for a while as I'm going for a drive with my family. I will probably be there when I get back though. Until then, bye.
Title: Re: Quake 3 Arena
Post by: Gregjazz on Fri 23/12/2005 18:31:27
When I go into multiplayer it checks through around 1500 servers and only one comes up on the list.
Title: Re: Quake 3 Arena
Post by: mozza on Fri 23/12/2005 22:28:17
It should say something like: Showing x out of 1500 servers. or something like that and x keeps getting higher as more servers show on the list. I will look for another server now that we can connect though the ip with, because I find it easier to connect directly rather than manually searching through a list populated by about 1500 servers.

EDIT:
The server is:
OPC|Q3*FFA
207.44.202.82

It has Punkbuster Enabled so ensure that you do too. Try the ip address first, if that fails try looking for it. I'm in there now, bye.

EDIT2: How is this for a time again?

Trying to join... I'm not sure if it stalls or what when connecting. I open up the console and it connects fine, but then it seems to stall at the part that goes: "PunkBuster Client: Received New Security Information"

Is it downloading an update (though the latest version of PunkBuster is supposed to come with the latest Q3 patch) or what?

Changed my name and trying again...

I go to "internet" then click "specify" and then type in "207.44.202.82" then press "fight" and then it brings up the "Connecting to 207.44.202.82" screen and there's text that says: "Awaiting Challenge...1" and the number slowly goes up. It doesn't seem to drop me or anything but it just stays there.

I can't see why it would not let you connect unless it has something to do with where you live, and we can't help that. I have an idea that might help us see what the problem is. How about you find a server you can connect to, then I will see if I can connect to it too. We can then see if it has something to do with your end or with the server's end. Or something.
Thanks.

Okay, I can get a private server up (thanks to a friend) but the only thing is that it is in version 1.30. I think that most of you probably would have upgraded to 1.32, but this is the best I can do. To find out which version you have, on the title screen push "~" on your keyboard to bring the console down and look in the bottom right.
I will just have to talk to my friend about the name and IP of the server.
Does anyone still want to participate?

If you happen to have the version 1.32 of Quake you can install a switcher which you can download here (http://www.quaketweaks.com/). Just scroll down and look on the right side for a file under the heading "Version Switcher".
The server is called "AGS Server" or "AGS Clan Server". It will not be up all of the time and it is in version 1.30

1.32 can join 1.30 servers so that's not a problem.

Ok I can get us a server which runs version 1.30 of Quake 3 Arena. The server will be called AGS Server or AGS Clan Server.
It will be ready at 08:30:00 a.m. Wednesday January 25, 2006 in GMT.

To check your time against this click me. (http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc)

If you are running a different version of Quake 3 Arena:

Just ensure you have version 1.32 installed before installing the switcher. Also the switcher is not infected at all and works fine with my machine. (I use it regularly.)

Hope to see you there, and any feedback please post here.

EDIT: Found out that the server should be running for 2 hours.

Just to be sure that you can enter the server and you are on the right version try to connect to "RAVENS Rocket&Rail" server by searching through the list or at the IP of 210.49.189.254
I also recommend the free version of "Yahoo! All Seeing Eye" (http://videogames.yahoo.com/multiplayer). It lets you see any server any time. Just have Quake 3 Arena on your list and check the box for "Australia" as the server will be in Australia.

Good to hear some people are still willing to give it a go.

How serious is this quake thing?

I played a lot when I was a few years younger :)
Why not relive that age once more.

In tiny lan parties we always played the xaero level, that's a super level when playing with like 5/6 players!

I strongly suggest that map! :D

My friend is getting his computer ready to run the server, checking settings etc. now. I think it will be great to do something like this, and like you said, I have had fun in the past with my friends playing first person shooters.

I'll talk to him about map rotation, we will probably have a fair few maps in there, no custom maps either.

Also there is the question of do we want just normal Quake 3 Arena, or do we want to play a mod like InstaUnlagged (server makes up for the players lags when they fire), berylium (has modifiers like grappling hook), and what weapons available (I like to play railgun only, but that would really only be ok if we played InstaUnlagged). At the moment I will ask to set it up as normal like you would have when playing single player.

As I said please post your comments and feedback here, otherwise I wouldn't know what to ask him.

My friend has it running. It is called "AGS CLAN SERVER" and has normal deathmatch with no mods and all original maps. IP is "220.245.94.121:27961" so press "~" for console then type "/connect 220.245.94.121:27961" (without the quotation marks) if you can't see it from inside Quake.

I am in there now.

EDIT: Have to go have some food, will be back later to play. (Hopefully) The server is still open and it has 2 bots in there. Please post and say if you are going in.

Post by: Gregjazz on Wed 25/01/2006 09:25:21
My router has closed all ports imaginable.

So besides opening port 27961 I have to figure out which ports PunkBuster uses and whatnot. So much work! And then each time I change something in my router settings I have to wait 60 minutes for it to start up again. I liked my old router better than the one I have now. :(
