I tried linking to a gif to use as my avatar by copying it into the appropriate field in my profile and then saving the changes, but it's not showing up in my posts, and I'm not getting an error message that the file is too big. Any ideas?
Thanks!
You're trying to link to an HTML file, not a gif. You'll need to host the file somewhere (and not leech as you're trying to do).

Yeah, I went back to the site I was trying to link to, and (I had missed this) it said please don't link to their avatars, but to download them and "save as" to my computer. I never knew what I was trying to do was leeching...ooops!
So how do I host the file somewhere, as you suggested?
Put it on http://imgur.com for now. They completely crippled their interface, but it's still usable.
-Click "Computer" to the right, select the saved gif, then click "start upload".
-When the image is uploaded, either right-click it and select "copy image location" or copy the BBcode part in between [img] and [/img]

Awesome, thanks! It worked, and now I be smarter than before.
