Title: Re: AGS' issue with templates
Post by: Rui 'Trovatore' Pires on Thu 18/11/2004 10:31:11
Ok, I didn't know if this could be posted in the Tech forum, so I took no chances and posted it here.

Quote from CJ:
QuoteOk, I've been looking into the templates problem.

There is indeed a bug, which has in fact been there ever since templates were added, but has only surfaced recently due to other changes.

Basically, when you create the template, if you give it a filename longer than 15 characters, it will not always load back into the editor properly.

The workaround for now is simply to make sure that when you create a template, you give it a name of 15 characters or less.

Unfortunately, for templates that are already out there, the user cannot simply rename the file -- this will not work. Therefore, any template authors who this affects, please re-make your templates with a shorter name.

And before anyone asks, the 15 characters excludes the ".agt" extension.

My apologies for the inconvenience.

I've been looking into it, and the templates that feature problems are:

Proskrito's DOTT
Proskrito's FOA
MI1 (from inquisitor)

Just letting everyone know that I'll be using 2.62 to re-compile and rename these three templates, so no one has to worry. I'll edit this post as soon as that's done. And you template authors, be forewarned!

EDIT - So much for wishful thinking... it seems this problem had already surfaced in 2.62 final and maybe even before... people just didn't notice it.

Anyone who has an older version of AGS that can still read templates, please step forward so we can get this sorted out?

i've reuploaded FOA with a shorter name, and DOTT works for me (in 2.62 at least)
try them now: http://usuarios.lycos.es/golfapagina/templates/

I confirmed, DoTT didn't work for me. But now they both work! Thanks, I'll upload both shortly.

A fun fact for anyone interested - the USER can rename them as they wish, however long the filename ends up being. As long as the MAKER didn't SAVE it with a 15+ character name, even HE can later rename the file for distribution.
