Title: RPG making communities
Post by: Kinoko on Fri 18/02/2005 03:36:57
Does anyone know of any decent RPG game making communities? I've been checking out some games at www.gamingw.net, downloaded a whole bunch only to find that each and every one is an RPG Maker 2k game, and hence needs the program itself to play them (which I find utterly annoying and inconvenient, especially seeing as each game is a folder consisting of hundreds of seperate files - blech! This is why I adore AGS...).

99% of the RPGs there are RPGM2k games, and I just can't be bothered with them. Are there any decent RPG game making communities the rough equivalent of AGS? I'd like to see what other people have out there, how much effort people are putting into their games, etc... I just want to be able to download simply exe files and not have to play them through other software.

Femme recommended Ika (http://ika.sourceforge.net/).Ã,  I've never tried it, but it's all in Python, and seems dependable.

I had tinkered with The RPG Toolkit (http://www.toolkitzone.com) for a long time, but it's tough to work with sometimes.

Well, I wasn't referring to the program as such, but actual communities of people who make RPGs (whatever the program). I checked out the ika/etc forums and... well, they leave a lot to be desired. There just doesn't seem to be anything out there with semi-serious RPG game makers, posting decent, -completed- games, discussing independant RPGs. Well, I can;t find anywhere like that, anyway.

Well you can try http://www.rpgdx.net, a site I also advertise in the Arcana E-zine. It is the center of Indie RPG Gaming, and there's not a single RPG Maker 2000 game in sight.

It's a very good site, and definitely worth a look.

As we're on the subject, can anyone recommend a very good SNES style rpg done with any of the engines that are around? None of the ones I tried that had been done with RPG Maker or RPG Toolkit ever inspired me to continue playing for more than 3 minutes or so, and the only promising one I've ever come across doesn't seem to be alive anymore (http://www.fenixblade.com).

Verge seems cool, but a little more programming heavy.....hey seem to have a neat little community too.

No problem, Kinoko. ;D

It's a great site, and it has some of the best indie RPGs available on the net.
