Just wondering how many people here, and I do realise this is an adventure game community, play RPGs? I'm making an RPG with AGS and I wonder how many people from this community would play it. Do you play your western Ultima style RPGs or Japanese RPGs more? Or both?

What's the deal, people?  :(

I play Japanese style RPGs mostly, like Terranigma, Secret of Mana, etc. That's the style my game will be in. So who would actually be interested in playing it?

BerserkerTails

I play RPGs all the time. I love them, both Japanese and American ones. The last one I completed was Morrowind (American), and I'm currently playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Also American).

My favorites, however, are both Japanese. "Lunar: The Silver Star" and "Final Fantasy VII".

I've seen screenshots from your game Knioko, and it looks quite impressive. Even without your background (Cirque de Zale ruled!), I'd still play it when it came out. I'm definatley looking forward to it!
I make music.

My all-time favourite RPG is Betrayal at Krondor, and I believe Return to Krondor is a very poor sequel. Draw your own conclusions...
Reach for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.

Kneel. Now.

Never throw chicken at a Leprechaun.

Lucky

I play both.
On japanese ones, my favorite is definitely Final Fantasy VI. I'm one of the three people who found VII kinda disappointing. Best western one is naturally Nethack.

Captain Mostly

I don't usually enjoy Eastern Style RPG's, but I liked Zelda: Wind Waker.

Western style RPG's float my boat a LOT more. I liked morrowind, all of Baldur's Gate, PlaneScape, but the BEST RPG of ALL time was "Dungeon Master"

Eye of the Beholder was good too....

And Heimdall 2, although I don't know if that's an RPG as such...

Toefur

RPG's are enjoyable, but they're quite easy too involved in, and before you know it you're 20 and you've been playing Ultima almost non stop for the last five years.

I don't really play many games, and not many at all anymore, so I guess I'm not as up to scratch as most people. The Ultima games are definately my favourites (6 & 7), and I honestly can't think of too many other's I've played.  :P

I could never get into Morrowind.

Actually, Betrayal in Antara? I actually quite adored that.

Moox

I like final fantasy, but other then that I hate all the jap stuff like anime etc.... Its just a poor excuse for art.

Mostly into western ones. My fave is NeverWinter Nights. I used to play Diablo 2, baldurs gate, etc...

I love most of the Final Fantasies I've played (especially I, V, VI and VII), even though I often feel like the developers are putting as much effort into trying to bore me as they are to blow me away.

I mean, those idiotic unskippable 'summon' sequences really hurt the otherwise wonderful VII and pretty much destroyed VIII. I also generally see the whole 'random encounters' thing as a boring, outdated gameplay concept that should've been weeded out of the series years ago.

But even so, when the games hit their stride, the characters, epic storylines and unfathomably beautiful music (and, hey, sometimes even the gameplay) just drag me in like few games ever do.

My all time favourite would probably have to be Zelda - Link's Awakening on the Game Boy. That was just a beautiful game. Action RPGs in general work better then turn-based combat systems, I think.

By the way, I have this community to thank for leading me to the wonderful Terranigma (which I'd never even heard of). That game just kept surprising me from start to finish. Shame it's so insanely hard, though.

As for western RPGs, I've always had a big love for Exile/Avernum shareware games, from www.spidweb.com. They're sometimes a bit bogged down by fiddley stat-shenanigans, but I've always found them an incredibly engrossing and entertaining bunch of games.

My posts are too long.

I really want to like an RPG some day, and I keep trying, but none ever seem to get me involved, too much repetitive action. I see no reason why they need to have said actions, so there must be some that don't have it, but it becomes tiresome clicking and clicking to increase a number in your stats.

I'll keep trying though, since I'm not foolish enough the condemn an entire genre just because it hasn't worked for me.

I'm getting quite into RPGs these days. I got hooked on the final fantasy ones - probably 'cos the involving stories; half the reason I like adventure games. Though I am trying out some others. I'm finding some of the Zelda ones rather addictive.Ã,  Strangely I quite like Morrowind -Ã,  I usually find such heavily stat based games rather daunting. Oh, and of course Knights of the Old Republic -Ã,  brilliant. Can't wait for the sequel!

I think the main things that draw me to RPGs are:
1. Involving plot, and characters And involving plots in side-quests is always a bonus.
2. Not too heavy on stats. Not sure why I like Morrowind, because there's so many skills and stats to mess around with.
3. And takes bloody ages to complete (but without being tedious), I like to feel I've got my money's worth. Like the .hack//infection took me <20hours to complete. The average final fantasy takes 40hours minimum. Worked out though, as I got .hack on sale for half price. ;D

Hope some of this ramble helps.

I really began to like RPG's a couple of years ago.Ã,  But one of the best RPG/Adventure games i have played to date is Dark Cloud 2 for the Playstation 2.

It is such a fun game and the graphics are simply breathtaking!!Ã,  There is so much to do in this game that i have yet to finish it even though i bought it when it first came out in early 2003.

I enjoy building up character stats and also increasing weapon stats. It is just something i find really fun, and always keeps me coming back for more.

I also have Zelda: Wind Waker, but of course haven't finished that game either. But it too, is amazing!

I like both action and turn-based, but I have to agree... Zelda is just one damn good complete-feeling game. It's still one of my favourites. Hopefully, you'll be happy to hear that my game will be action-based.

Oh, Paul. I'm SO happy to hear you found Terranigma. Isn't It wonderful? I think I should start up a church for Terranigma, I believe in it so strongly :P I'm still trying to get some of my friends to play it... stubborn bastards.

To this date, I've still never played one second of a Final Fantasy game after VI. As soon as it became 3D, I knew it was time to let Final Fantasy die for me. My favourite will always be FFIV... it's one of those games where the story really reaches me, and the game itself has so much depth while still being so simple. FF6 is also pretty good but 4 will always reign supreme for me ^_^

Los: I like your attitude! I hate people dismissing a whole genre just because they saw one or two games and didn't like them. Genre is a nice way of helping you find similar games to what you generally like, but I hate it when it stops people from experiencing an individual game's charm. Windwaker, for example, is what I consider to be one of, if not THE greatest game on the GameCube. It's not my personal, all-time, classic favourite but it's just a wonderful, wonderful game and so many people who have never liked RPGs before find themselves falling in love with that game - and with good reason!

If only Giftpia was translated and released overseas, I feel that game would break so many boundaries over here in the West. It can't be places into a genre, it's such a unique and fun game... ah well.

Has anyone played Skies of Arcadia? Even though the American dubbing is atrocious (I've played both US and Japanese versions so believe me, I can tell you the difference is huge), it's a REALLY great game. I was so skeptical of it at first because I still hated 3D at the time it came out, and it looked a little lame. It's actually got one of those big, almost Grim Fandango-like storylines that really envelopes you. I love it, personally. One of my favourite modern RPGs.

I bought it some time ago, and was pretty disappointed. The plot hasn't really taken off yet (I'm in that desert temple right now.) and the battles are even more repetitive than in FFs. I hope it gets more interesting soon.

Kinoko

Ahh, the desert temple? Then things are just about to get interesting ^_^ Do you have the Us version? Then you have to put up with "Dellltaaa Sttooorrrrmm" and such things, right? *shudders*

That game has a lot to offer for people who like playing games to their full. I spent easily 70 hours at the very least on it the first time around. I think...

Better dig it up again, I guess. And I'm playing the european version, which naturally has those irritating lines. :P I'll just have to cope with it. Thinking about Digimon's finnish dub should make it sound better.
