Title: S*T*O*R*M
Post by: jaz on Mon 19/09/2005 11:47:46
Hi everybody,

here I am with a little request. I am working on a mobile shoot 'em up which is going to be completed soon. The problem is we didn't have any good sounding name, only working title which can't be used for variety of reasons. But finally we've come up with simple name: S*T*O*R*M. It sounds OK for a shmup and it looks like an acronym of some sort.

Now, here goes my problem: I am not able to come up with any decent meaning for the acronym :)

Any suggestions? As you can see it's pure shmup set in three worlds (snow, jungle, desert). Primary goal is to save whatever has to be saved...

Here's my shot at it:

Special
Team
Of
Rescue
Missions

As you can see, it sounds a bit lame... at least to me. But, hey: cyborgname websitecame up with even worse acronym :)

So, if any of you have any idea, please tell me. Your name will be listed in credits and you will get a free copy of the game.

Heh, a good one :)

But it should prefferably be a name of some undercover military organisation.

Special
Tactics
Operational
Rescue

Do you actually need to say what it stands for? Why not leave is as S*T*O*R*M (or Project S*T*O*R*M, or Operation S*T*O*R*M), and let players assume there's a meaning to it.

Security

Just a few I managed to think of that might fit, or perhaps a play of combining words from the various selections to make the preferred acronym.  Good luck with the game, and let us know what you finally decide on  :)

Single Transgender Orthodontist Requests Man, please call xxx-xxxx.

Forcing a definition on an acronym seldom turns out well.  It seems that's what was done with fear.  It almost seems like they might've formed the entire plotline just because they had a cool-looking FPS and a surefire name.

Maybe it'd be easier to have it be the acronym for a theoretical piece of equipment on board?  Or maybe the callsigns of the operators: Stiletto, Tank, Obsidian, Razor, Monchichi

I like Yakspit's idea to perhaps relate the acronym to something *in* the game. Personally I don't think you can make a very good meaning out of "s.t.o.r.m".

Well, I suppose you are right but you never know if something obvious isn't just around the corner :)

If not then it's not a big deal. YakSpit's idea isn't bad, it could work this way but people, keep 'em coming, the more the better ;)

I checked the other thread with the cyber.... name generator:

STORM: Synthetic Troubleshooting and Online Repair Machine

You could use that ;D, but seriously I think that operation: S*T*O*R*M* sounds fine...

When I read the thread my thoughts went an entirely different direction!

I was more envisioning something corny, yet cool, out of a cheesy 80's action/thriller.  Less of a "sentence" using the letters of STORM, and more of a list.

Such as:

Strength * Tactics * Observation * Resources * Mandate

"We operate by five principals; strength, tactics, observation, resources, and mandate.  We are called on when the situation is critical.  We are the last, best, line of defense.  Gentlemen ... welcome to STORM!"

Just thought I'd contribute ... even if that's not what you're looking for :)

Do they, eh ;)?

In fact tweaked bits of graphics originally from MIA have been an excellent source of visuals for some of my games.Ã,  :)

You're done for. You must realize at this point that the "S" must stand for Special, Secret, or Stealth. The "T" must stand for Tactical, Team, or Terrorist. The O must stand for Operations, Organization, or Operatives (smaller articles, state of being verbsÃ,  and prepositions rarely if ever get put in an acronym, so that kind of rules out "or" or "of"). "R" must stand for Resistance, Reconaissance, or Revolution. "M" must stand for Mission, Military, or M... umm... Mmmm... Muu... Mother.... ummm. Okay, just Mission or Military. Simply come up with a simple program to randomize these {a=int(rnd*3)+1)} and then put any necessary SOB verbs, prepositions, or articles in.
Ã,  Actually, I like the idea not to give it a meaning. I mean, what in god's name did "DUDES" stand for in the old NES game "BAD DUDES?" In case you didn't notice, it had periods between each letter. What about operation: WOLF, or Codename: VIPER, or any of those old NES games that never gave you any idea what you were supposed to be? What did the A stand for in A*Team, and what did COBRA stand for in GI Joe? Speaking of which, why was a crack team of military specialists called "Govornment Issue Joe" for anyway? See? Just keep it as it is. No one's going to care anyway.
Ã,  One of my favorite shows ever has got to be Witch Hunter: Robin. Robin works for a secret organization called the STNJ. I love the STNJ, and think it's the coolest combination of four letters to be had... However, not anywhere in the 29 episodes that comprise the show did I ever find out what "STNJ" stood for...

Note S.H.I.E.L.D in the world of comics, where they were compelled to create a new backronym every few years because they realised how dumb the last one was, as long as the acronym itself was cool.

Hm, maybe it would be better not to give any meaning to the title. But there are some good ideas in this thread.

Anyway, your feedback is valuable for me so thank you and keep it coming.

If it will be possible I will mention all of you in game's credits :)
