Title: Scale of the Universe.
Post by: Stupot on Sun 15/05/2011 12:11:16
This is a really interesting diagram of the Universe with a slidy bar that lets you zoom from right at the edge of the universe to right down to the quantum foam that supposedly makes up the fabric of space and time.

That's an interesting link â€" thank you for this!

This may sound stupid (didn't read much scientific reports about the universe) â€" but isn't the universe endlessly?
It somehow remembers me of the earth being a disc where you will fall off at the edges.

Good to know that a scrambled and a solved Rubik's cube are the same size! :=

This reminds me of the classical film and book "Powers of Ten (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powers_of_Ten)", had the same concept, but with less objects for comparison.

These (http://xkcd.com/482/) two (http://xkcd.com/485/) figures about scale on xkcd are also quite interesting.

There are different theories. According to the Big Bang Theory, the galaxy is constantly expanding, thus has a certain size. Others say that the galaxy is constant and infinite.

Hm... Deimos, Phobos... Mars. Found it. And there's clearly no DUCT TAPE there.
Interesting stuff, really. Never heard of the "foam of time", but it's fun to read up!

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Thank you for showing us this, Stupot :=

How did they make it zoom in and out like that?

I saw this some time ago... just mind-blowing.

My brain melts somewhere around the Oort Cloud.  Past that the sizes/distances just become something my brain can't cope with.

That and it show-cases just how insignificant we [humans] are.

Reminds me of the Total Perspective Vortex.
Pretty cool, thanks for sharing.

More distressingly, it shows how insignificant we [members of the AGS forum] are!
