Title: See the world, but don't get up.
Post by: shbaz on Sun 22/08/2004 23:00:57
http://www.keyhole.com/

You can download a 7-day trial of software that will view any part of the world using satellite imagery mapped to a simple 3d translation of the Earth. I've noticed that you can zoom in close enough to figure out what kind of cars people drive in some places, but in others it's pixellated to hell. Fun to play with, nevertheless, because the entire Earth is mapped.

Best to have a fast computer, it's very heavy on system recourses. It requires faster internet connections too, because it's constantly downloading image data as you zoom in closer and closer.

It's also in full color, unlike sites like terraserver.microsoft.com.

Keyhole was pretty cool.... I had the trial for a while, but it didn't have that many unimportant locations like where I live right now.. it was just a blur back then.  :(

They need an email address to send a passcode to, so it wouldn't work..

Try upgrading java at java.com.

Have you tried making fun of its mother?

http://terraserver.microsoft.com is almost as good, just not in color and not in 3d. It doesn't have the entire world either.

Yeah, it was easy to find.

Sadly, I can't find anything in the nordic countries. it's all a green blob where cities should be. the roads are marked with lines, but they are still lines from 400 metres. if you go closer than 13km on any nordic country all you get is green gradient when it's fully loaded. I can see the crossings of streets in New York though.

If the images were up to date or something, then it'd be pretty cool, but as an example, half of Montreal is currently in winter and the other half is... not.

This is really cool, but yet kind of creepy. I just found my house on this program.  I wanted to zoom in more, but it was all blurry.  Weird, very weird..

This is great, except for two things:

1. No date and time on the photos. Boo.
2. Lame coverage. I wanted to be able to count the cacti in West Texas, or just see Belfast or Ocho Rios.

Maybe in a few years it'll be there (and realtime!).

Oh, and for Yufster:

Jesus Christ.

I didn't know it was that detailed.

That's creepy.

Jeez, I really, really feel like pulling somebody out of one of those cars and running over a parade, for some reason.

How did you find DoubleFine's address? I couldn't find it anywhere, though my search was pretty half-assed.

Speaking of Double Fine's address, that's no longer Double Fine's address.

You have the wrong building.

Yeah, that's been known for years.. people should have been more freaked out than they were by that stupid Will Smith movie, especially after the Patriot act.

It's a wonder they allow this stuff for civilian use. Imagine how easy that makes things for terrorists. Despite that it is all easily available stuff, it's like handing them a map. Actually, it is handing them a map.

Arghh, It doesn't let me log in. I got my details in my email, but it says they are incorrect. And this program sounds cool.

Edit: Well ok then, for Keyhole LT 2 it didnt work, but for version 1 it worked.

Edit 2: Hmm well there you go, I go back to version 2 and it lets me use it. Yay

It's limited.. if you go to a really mountainous area that is mapped in hi-res then you'll see them pop up when you tilt the Earth. Mount St. Helens shows up, for one. It's in a sub-list to the right, one of this items at the top. I think it said "Sight seeing" or something.
