sheath  pirate ashamed brandy

These four words share a quality unlike most words.  Observe them carefully and report what you think it is that they have in common.   The person who gets the closest to the answer will be dubbed "king of the day with too much time on his hands." *Note- there are many relationships to guess but you will undoubtebly KNOW the answer when it hits you, so you may want to refrain from posting unless you simply want to help the next person*

I read this riddle in a bathroom reader and it frustrated the crap out of me.
"I drink a thousand shipwrecks.'"

visy (the guy who made Lassi Quest)

easy, they descibe moods(or whatever):

(s) "heath"  (p) "irate" (a) "shamed" (b) "randy"

just take the first letter off :)

Spoiler
Could it be that they have verbs in them? "eat", "rate", "ashame" and "brand"?
Not one of those heureka!-solutions, just an idea.

sheath  pirate ashamed brandy

Each word can be broken down into 2 anagrams, when rearranged, they yield the following secret message:

rand has made at by the ripe ash

I'm a bit confused though because I dug holes around al the ash trees in my yard and didn't find any treasure there.

Silly, they weren't ripe.

WIT!

I agree with DGMacphee though.

Yes. I need input on the story, a sprite I made, and I have a request for an AGS template.

Andail

Ok, I think I got it now.

Spoiler

They can be broken down into four new words, by cutting of letters.

sheath heath heat eat at
pirate irate rate ate at
ashamed (ashame) shame sham ham am
brandy randy rand (or andy) and an

Andail, you basically have the relationship but you need to realize and state the method you are using to form new words.  Also, there is an alternate way to dissect "brandy".
"I drink a thousand shipwrecks.'"

Darth Mandarb

I [sort of] remember something like this (though I think it was different words) from somewhere in my past ...

Spoiler
Is it removing one letter from the front/back at a time to make a new word?
Sheath > heath - heat - eat - at
Pirate > irate - rate - ate - at
Ashamed > ashame - shame - ham - am
Brandy > Brand - bran - ran - an

Yep, and then even "a".

Congrats everyone.

heh. cool puzzle, though given that logic it means DG was the first of anyone to get it right. Although he didn't explicitly say the letter 'a', he did give the game away. And is it just me, or is it weird to have a word game where the whole point of the game is to realise that each of them contains the letter 'a'?

Either way, it was fun to think over.

Uh.. get some more sleep and then re-read the posts. That wasn't the puzzle key.  ;)
Once I killed a man. His name was Mario, I think. His brother Luigi was upset at first, but adamant to continue on the adventure that they started together.

yeah, I know it wasn't the key.

But it obviously WAS, seeing as DG thought of it, and he has the thundering-typhoonish wisdom of Captain Haddock.

Just read the AGS-manual:

"Whenever a word game is introduced to the community, Daniel McPherson will always be the first to solve it. Even if it looks like another person presented the solution first, the credit shall go to Daniel McPherson."

so as we say: STFU n00bs, and read the freaking manual!!
