So has anyone heard of Shining Force namely Shining Force 2?

I am currently playing through Shining Force 2.

You mean the RPGs on Sega Genesis? Of course. I preferred Phantasy Star over those however.

Same here. Luckily both the PS and SF titles were on the recent Sega Mega Drive ultimate collection. I love me some retro gaming

WOW THAT WAS CRAZY FAST!

i never got around to playing fantasy star, the main reason i am playing through Shining Force 2 is because of memory's from when i was 5 and started playing it.

i'll be sure to have a go at fantasy star, i know my dad has it in some box, somewhere.

Edit: it was right at the top of the box but dads got in japanese and i can only find roms PS1 in japanese :'(

Edit2: i just got the rom for PS2 i tried it upto the first battle and, no i dont like the battle system i prefer the SF system

Phantasy Star II was my favorite, next to III. Had great music, and fast gameplay.

SEGA Smash Pack 2 = Shining Force = $10 USD.

Best $10 ever..except maybe Curse of Monkey Island.

Walmart's not as bad as some people make it out to be.

That said, Shining Force was pretty well done. Good graphics and music, particularly!

gauntlet how many of you played it?

@DeadSuperHero again i never really liked that sort of battle format that chrono trigger uses, i like the shining force system because you have more tactics, or at least you do when i play.

@Peder thats a nice collection you've got there, some really nice games.

@Radiant just looking at planescape torment, it kinda looks like baldur's gate another good game.

I'm sure everyone here knows about Gauntlet. It's a classic multiplayer arcade game. It's actually quite boring by yourself. Same with the newer ones, like Gauntlet Legends and the sequels. Not as fun by yourself but loads of fun with other people.

Those games are really what having split screen multiplayer was about IMO. Especially when you take a potion or food from someone. "HEY! I needed that!"

Splitscreen is what I miss in alot of modern games these days. Most are either singleplay or only have online mp, which is quite a shame. Games like GRID would be so much more fun with splitscreen play, but for some reason they haven't included it.

I agree. You can't match the feeling of just being in the same room with friends, playing a game and having fun. A mic just isn't the same. The overall spirit isn't there.

I remember playing Goldeneye on N64 almost every day with my uncle Jeremy, my brother, some of my cousins, and some of my uncle's friends. We'd have almost 10-12 people in his room waiting to play, switching controllers around every match. You just can't achieve the same feeling with a headset.

Shining Force top a LOT of Japanese RPG's on the single premise of a battle system that actually has some point to it. The strategic element is very well written, making for quite a lot of sneaky playing styles. It is also the biggest problem with the game, making for some endless battles. I loved the battles within a specific area, when movement ratio plays a much bigger part. The landscape battles grow tedious after a while when you only may move 1-2 squares each turn.

Still, I love the games passionately.

The only Shining I really enjoyed (aside from the movie) was the original, which was a standard dungeon crawl with charming character designs and lots of weird weapons you could buy. Shame the rest of the series went that boring tactical route.

Shining in the Darkness? Never got into the DC-scene, I enjoyed the tactical battles much more with the sequels, even though I've fiddled a bit with some NES-crawlers.

Shining in the Darkness is one of my all-time favorite games. I would come home from school, put on Mental Jewelry (Live's first album) and play both for hours (this was back when you didn't need just the sound from the game cause they didn't talk)! Still can smell that Michigan summer breeze coming through the open window when I have this memory...

I loved Shining Force (and Shining Force II) as well. I attempted the Phantasy Star games but just couldn't get into them. Oddly, my brother loved them and couldn't get into the Shining games. Go figure!
