Hi there!

I'd like to know if there's any handy, that has not got loads of requeriments, program that you can select the palete (16, 256 colors) you want to work with and work with that?

It's because I wanna make a game in 16 colors and MS Paint works with a different palette than the one I wanna use.

Any suggeriments?

You're wrong, Darth, I'm afraid.

Here's a quick way to do palettes, I think I saw it in some tutorial -

Put ALL the colors you want in a single BMP file.

In the Palette editor, LOCK all colors.

Import the BMP as a scene for a room.

Go to the palette editor, and UNLOCK all colors.

Unless I'm mistaken, and my memory MAY indeeed be playing tricks on me, you'll have a nice palette you can easily export/import.

Evil's Tutorial on custom colors in MS Paint.

In Paint:

1. Click on Color in the task bar, then Edit Colors
2. Click Define Custom Colors
3. Click on a white square Under Custom Colors
4. Then choose your color from either Basic Colors or the color pallet
5. Then click Add to Custom Colors
6. Do this for as many colors as you'd like

While drawing you can either go back to the custom colors and select a color, or:

1. Double click on a color at the bottom you wish to change.
2. Choose your new color
3. Select ok and the color will switch

Though you can't save these pallets, you can write down the specifics for your colors you need in a text document. In Define Custom Colors there are 2 sets of numbers; Hue, Saturation and Luminosity (HSL) and Red, Green, and Blue (RGB). Write down either set of numbers (I prefer RGB) and then punch them in when you need that color.

I knew how to do that, but the problem is that MS Paint does not let me save the pictures in the 16 colors I want.

But anyway, I've found NeoPaint [www.neosoftware.com] that can edit the palettes and do a lot of things that Paint can't. There are also things that Paint can do and NeoPaint can't. But now I'm happy I've found it.

What file type are you saving as? Saving as JPG and GIF in Paint will change your colors. Saving as BMP or PNG will not. Try saving as a PNG.

PNG it doesn't change the colors because it saves it in 16-bits (as well as if you save it in 16-bit BMP).

But I want to save it in 16 colors or 256 colors with a different palette than the Paint default. With NeoPaint I don't have this problem.

I highly recommend Idraw.  It's a simple paint program created specifically for characters and sprites.  It lets you customize your palette as well as producing all shades within given ranges.  Aside from a fairly powerful palette editor, it has a basic animation tool and its drawing tools are a bit more sprite-worthy than MS-Paint.

Do whatever Yak said, use a programme which is really capable of handling palettes properly (like DP or Grafx 2), M$Pain (together with MOST awesome windows graphics apps like PS, PSP) is totally crap in handling palettes properly.

Paint that comes in Windows 3.11 can save palettes, but I doubt anyone here still has Windows 95.

I still use win95 and win3.1 on pure DOS, but still, DON'T use M$Pain for serious palettized graphics, it's crap.

 :o Hey now, I take that as an insult.   I use MSPaint for all of my graphics, and I don't think they're all that bad.  Like my banner in my sig for instance, I think I did a pretty good job on that, if I may say so myself.

That would explain it ... windows 95 was probably the last time I seriously played with M$Paint

Yes, I can remember that in Paintbrush in Win 3.x you were able to change the pal. But its a s**t you can't in the newest Paints.

I use M$Pain a lot, but it certainly is NOT the right piece of stuff for palettized graphics.
