Title: Slickdeal! Free Corel Paint Shop Pro X
Post by: Trent R on Tue 14/04/2009 21:49:55
Seems like this deal technically died, but there is still the Rapidshare link below, or you could PM me (I got one such earlier today)

PS- Remember that I check this forum (and some other sites) all the time, so if you're looking for something, PM me and I'll let you know if I can find it for you.

Original Post:

Note to mods: If this thread needs be locked or edited, go ahead. Just figured I'd share (which is how I found it in the first place).

I'm a member and frequent visitor to a site called Slickdeals (http://slickdeals.net/). Members post shopping deals and freebies that they find all over the internet, and me and my bro have bought a ton of great cheap stuff through the site.

I found a thread (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=329204=1294613) today about downloading the full version of Corel Paint Shop Pro X for free!

Since the thread wiki can explain it better than me:
QuoteThis is NOT Mac OS X compatible.

I don't know what these "extras" are.

Comparison with the other versions included the latest is in this pdf (http://"http://www.corel.com/img/content/products/psppx2/corel-paint-shop-pro-photo-x2-past-version-comparison.pdf") link.

You are harassed after nearly every use of the program to "upgrade for $59.99" unless you remove the nag screen. See below.

Procedure to remove nag screen:
1. After installing, open the following file in Notepad:
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro X\PCUUI\Container.htm
2. Erase all the text, replace it with the following code:

<script type="text/javascript">
location="pcucmd://Cancel?confirm=no";
</script>

3. Save the file.

For some reason vista wouldn't allow me to remove the text from container.htm and then paste in the info from the wiki, then save. i had to open the container.htm file, save as to my desktop, edit the contents... then save. then copy that over to the location of the original container.htm to overwrite the original file.  (This Vista's security model.  No editing allowed in any Program Files subdirectory)

I installed the software but when I click on the icon on my desktop nothing happens. The software doesn't even open. Is this happening for anyone else? I am running Vista as my operating system.

I have Vista also, for some reason when I downloaded it lost the .EXE extension, so you have to add it back on, to make it executable. Then it'll work.

Removing the nag screen is considered circumventing copy protection. Whilst what you do or not do is not a concern of mine, im pretty sure that its against the rules to post this stuff.However if you remove the bit about removing the nag screen, you've pretty much covered yourself.

Just a polite heads up before the mods eat you alive  ;D

QuoteRemoving the nag screen is considered circumventing copy protection
Well, since it doesn't prevent copies from being made and since free copies are being given away it can hardly be considered copy protection.  It may or may not be the case that keeping the nag screen is a condition of obtaining the free copy but that is a different issue entirely.  Technically speaking, the instructions don't eliminate the Nag screen but rather  tell how to display a different NAG screen, though it appears to contain nothing to display and automatically close itself.

So why is no one interested in this post? Is it the supposed illegality of it? I thought the large amount of digital artists on this forum would be thrilled.

To reassure, this is completely legal. It was a partnership download available from the Lexar website. If you don't feel it's right to remove the nag screen, then so be it. It's still an excellent program.

I already own a legit boxed copy of PSP7, i really don't like the interface changes made to later versions (and i'm actually still not that thrilled with the way PSP7 looks over PSP4, i HATE floating toolbars), I might download this incase I decide to try it out in the future. For now I'm very content with 7.

I want to add just that Paint Shop Pro is relatively cheap compared to Photo Shop and other stuff like that. It's in the rach of most people really interested in drawing :)

Anyways great link :) Some people will be happy to get it legally (downloading software isnt illegal at all - hosting and providing it to other people is :P)

EDIT: AND as far as you use it only in no-commercial way it isnt really ripping of the Corel company :) that's my philosophy

I like Paint Shop Pro, (I prefer it over Photoshop), but since Corel bought the product it has gone from bad to worse.

I have PSPXI at work and I've got to say that I far and away prefer the (Jasc) PSP9 I have at home.

Anyway, if it's free and you're currently working with nothing better than MSPaint I say go for it. I'm a big fan of PSP in general. :)

If you are using MSPain, why wouldn't you just download paint.net or the gimp. Both are suitable FREE alternatives to the pile of dogs bollocks that is mspain.I have used pretty much every paint program possible, my favourites remain Photoshop CS4 and Corel Painter xi. I'd recommend the Gimp if you have morals and a tight wallet.

because mspaint is easy to use, and ideal for creating low-res sprites.

You really think MSPain is ideal for sprite creation? It lacks any tools that help with animation. I know it has been done (spooks), but it's a horrible choice of program. Something that allows onion skinning is probably the best choice, but layers are fine as well.

I find mspaint useful for basic sprite sketches mainly because I can resize the canvas instantly, unlike most other programs where one needs to dig through menus. A small point, but one I notice.

However, once I slowly got into the habit of using graphicsgale regularly I became more comfortable with it's interface and now hardly use paint. I have done walkcycles in paint but it does take five times as long to do.

Oh yeah... Paint Shop Pro. Thanks for the offer, but it's not for me :).

Phew. *wipes sweat off forehead* I thought I was getting the silent treatment from the community.

I do agree with most of you, Photoshop is the program for me. But it is free and wanted to share with you all.

We're getting a bit off topic here, but most sprites (http://arboris.deviantart.com/art/Space-Gypsy-108286018) and backgrounds (http://arboris.deviantart.com/art/Promanade-Preview-22164861) I've created are mostly done in mspaint. I have gimp, photoshop and the likes. But for easy access and not fiddle around with numerous settings for a damn simple sprite or background I'll take mspaint any day. And seriously, calling it "mspain" really doesn't help your arguement  ::).
