Hi there. I bought Dreamfall some while ago, the 3D sequal to The Longest Journey, one of the best newer adventure games i.m.o. ... but anyway,

I really enjoyed Dreamfall, but I like to buy more games alittle bit in the gamestyle of dreamfall, is there something great out there, because I'm not so much informed about latest games. Most important for me, is the story, it should have some mystery to life... I liked in 3D adventure games so far:

LBA2
Dreamfall
Amerzone
Grim Fandango

a game that disappointed me was the latest Broken Sword... well hope you people have some good titles for me! I kinda fell in love with "Zoe" the protagonist of dreamfall :p

Hard to say, really, without knowing what you've already played. But seeing as you liked Amerzone, you couldn't really go wrong with Benoit Sokal's other games:

Syberia
Syberia 2
Paradise

All have female protagonists, and capture the same "feel" of Sokal's work as Amerzone does.

Like I said, it's hard to say without already knowing what you've played.

And am I the only one who didn't like The Longest Journey?
I am just a shallow stereotype, so you should take into consideration that my opinion has no great value to you.

No I've heard loads of abuse about it.
But I enjoyed it, and actually this thread reminded me that I still have Dreamfall waiting to play sitting in a box in the attic.
I'll get on that soon.

Grim Fandango sucks.. really. Despite it's well written dialogues and atmosphere the story is for suckers.. Try Escape From Monkey Island..That rocks hell.
Worked on Strangeland, Primordia, Hob's Barrow, The Cat Lady, Mage's Initiation, Until I Have You, Downfall, Hunie Pop, and every game in the Wadjet Eye Games catalogue (porting)

Snarky

Fahrenheit (aka Indigo Prophecy) should fit the bill.

Haha! Funny man here ;)

I would say that you should try Runaway 1 & 2. You really can't go wrong :)

Secret Files: Tunguska and Runaway 2. though they are both broken sword clones.

I have played Tunguska and it's a great game but it's definitely NOT an Broken Sword clone. How can you say that? There's nothing alike. Except from the overall concept of trying to reveal a mystery, and that's too general an idea to call it a clone of anything. It's a great game of it's own. It's not first person however, like Minimi asked.
Two other great 3D but not first person adventure games are the Ankh games. Great humor, great puzzles. The closest modern commerical game to classic lucasarts adventures (well that and the Sam & Max series, obviously)

3D first person adventure games I recommend are Atlantis Evolution, the Egyptian Prophecy, Destination Treasure Island.

BTW. this thread should not be in General Discussion, but in Adventure-related Talk and Chat.

Seems to me I'm not the only one who thinks so. (note that I came to this conclusion before I read the review)

And our dear friend Minime never said anything about playing first person view adventure games, which means ...[dramatic pause]... it was YOU who stole miss Johnson's cookie jar!

Amerzone is first-person.

Kheops Studio's FP adventures are the least painful (ie.non-Myst like) of this sub-genre. For the most part, that is. They still contain a few Myst-esque puzzles (Voyage to the Moon particularly).

Tunguska smacks of Broken Sword a bit, yes. And not in a particularly good way. Like most recent east-european adventures (or rather, in this case, German) it's fairly average.

I happen to have a soft spot for Salammbo, simply because it's awesomely nuts.

If you're not afraid of spiders making crieking sound under floor boards and jumping into your face with their tiny sharp teeth in complete darkness...
try >>> this <<<. It's an fps with heavy adventure elements and very interesting approach to physics where you have to actually replicate in-game movements with your hand. A bit similar, but better than Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy. It feels creepier than Condemned: Criminal Origins mixed with Alone in the Dark.

But please, do not play at night. I won't take the responsibility for neither wet pants or heart attack by linking to this game.

So because it has mystery and is based on a vague historical event it's a clone?  that is again a ridiculous rant of people who don't wanna give new games a shot and would rather sit in their basements and reminisce about how everything used to be so great in the 90's and completely shoot down everything new just because it is new. Now true, things WERE great in the 90's and there's a lot of crap coming out today, but there's still good stuff coming out today too and writing off and killing everything that's new is unjusitifed.
If you played the game through and through, you'd know it's nothing like Broken Sword in any way except the general concept of mystery and history so what?
A CLONE would have to be something with a similiar story, similiar characters, similiar story. very similiar. It's nothing like that.

And minime said he wanted games like Dreamfall which is first person. So I assume that's he wins. Notice I put recommendations for both first person and non-first person games anyway.

Dreamfall is really not a first person game...

Nostradamus, sir, I do not know what you want to convey so I can't comment on your reply. I do want to know if it was targeted towards me, the forum users or to the general public.

I think Tunguska and Runaway are Broken Sword clones and I (and nobody else) will now explain why.

Characters: all characters have curiosity as their main character trait and motivation. They don't have to get involved but choose to do so, and it's only later on when they are involved to deeply that they can no longer get out. In Dreamfall it's the destiny of the characters. In Kings Quest it's their noble heritage. In Money Island it's Guybrush romantic idea of what a pirate would do.

Story: The genre of both 3 game is detective/conspiracy with elements of historic fiction set in the modern world. Dreamfall is an epic adventure set in fantasy and sci-fi worlds.

Locations: All 3 games feature many different locations around the world. This is generally the charm of the games.
To my dismay the characters travel great distances to follow a lead only to be blocked by a grumpy npc. which grinds the game to a complete halt.

Gameplay: In most cases the goal to the puzzle is already known; they come to a location to find a person or a paper that leads to a new location. However, the characters have to formulate the question correctly in order to get to the obvious solution (i.e. solve it how the developers wrote it). This is true to most adventure games, but they sometimes drop you into a situation where the goal is not known.

Nostradamus

OK I thought Dreamfall was first person. my bad about that.

jetxl, all your points are true, but still it's those points are too general to call it a clone. You should really check out the definition of the word and the its use in gaming.
A clone is not something that has some similiar general points. It's something that's almost indentical.
And the problem I have with it is that when you say SF:Tunguska is a clone it's demeaning and belittling it. It says that it's not a great game cos its makers made something great but because they copied something else, which they didn't.

Minimi

Hey there,

Thanks for all the recommendations! I couldn't really find exactly something like Dreamfall, as I was looking for the 3D look, but then a chasing camera behind a person, or something, dunno what the term is. ;) Anyway...

I found some kinda games that really drew my attention. "Sherlock Holmes versus Arsene Lupin"! I found a review whom gave the game a 55/100 wich convinced me to buy it, lol! They said, it's a game for those that like hard puzzles and like artworks, well, that's me, and I'm so totally sold to it. It's 3D first person view, you can walk around, no boring 360 panorama views , great graphics, great dialogs, and you have to be kinda smart to play the game.

I'd like to recommend right here the developers of this game and the whole series: www.frogwares.com! Frogwares really only releases adventure games, wich is so awesome! Their new game will be released this year called: "Dragula: Origin", wich will be 3D pre-rendered backgrounds, with 3D-shadowed characters. Their sherlock holmes series are fully 3D, and they also have some games like 80 Days, and Journey to the centre of the earth.

I'm just kinda excited that I now know that upon finishing my adventure game, I can prepare myself for a new one, and actually enjoy playing it.

PS: also bought Sinking Island, but haven't yet played it.
