Well, I can see what you mean in that leather is not necessary for survival, but leather in some cases is of the most rudimentary, cheap materials. What is REALLY luxury is when you pay 3  times the standard for decent shoes that aren't made of animal parts:



Sure, I've had black canvas shoes for restaurant work that cost like $13, but these sexy babies were triple digit, and worth every penny. I've worn them almost every day since June 2006 and they are still in near-excellent repair. Yay for luxuriating splurges  :D
