Title: Soundfont converter thingy?
Post by: Pet Terry on Wed 28/07/2004 00:17:05
'lo.

I've just found a bunch of excellent soundfonts, but some of them are in .sfArk or .sfpack formats, and the program I use for composing recognizes only .sf2 soundfont files. So the question is, is there a program that can convert .sfArk and .sfpack files into .sf2 ? I tried Vienna soundfont studio, but it wouldn't start because it didn't recognize my soundcard...

Yes, those are soundfont archives, extract them with http://www.personalcopy.com/sfpack.htm this.

Thanks scotch, that seemed to work for .sfpack's, but the program can't convert .sfArk's. It seems to be kinda weird that when developers add support for soundfonts, why they limit it to .sf2's only, because .sfArk's seem to be pretty popular aswell.

.sfpack and .sfArk files are not soundfont types, they are just means of compression, like a zip file. Look on google for sfArk, and you should be able to find the decompression program.

May I ask where you found the soundfonts? I'm trying to get into music making with logic, but I'm always short on decent instruments. VST's would be welcome too.  :)

Sorry for getting off-topic.

http://www.hammersound.net - I like this site because soundfonts are rated. Just look for soundfonts with rating atleast 8.5 and more votes than just few. Needless to say that there is lots of crap soundfonts aswell... :)

http://www.soundfonts.it - There lots of soundfonts, but they aren't rated so you just have to try and find out which ones are good and which ones are not.

http://www.memyselfandi.necron.uni.cc/ - This is Geoffkhan's site, he had good soundfonts there but the site has seemed to be down lately...

Have fun :)

Oh, and if anyone else has good sites to share, please do so!

This one has tons of soundfonts too, but it's hard to know what some of them are since they don't really give any info on them.

http://www.sf2midi.com/index.php

This site is for Sinfonia, which is mostly orchestral instruments.

This is an excellent program if you want extremely realistic orchestral instruments. It's basically a VST. Only problem is it costs $250, but if you're serious about writing orchestral stuff this is definitely worth it.

I have no idea why my website is down. I was getting hosting from some guy who has a hosting service where he individually accepts/declines people applying for the service. I haven't seen him online anymore, so maybe he just disappeared.

I have a great soundfont collection, and now DSL, so please people, let me give you my soundfonts! :)

Ah, I guess it's my generous day. You can bring them over.Ã,  ;)

Seriously, there used to be an #AGS DC++ Channel. Wouldn't this be the easiest way to "share" some soundfonts?

Oh, and Thanks to Petteri and Sluggo for the Soundfont links!

Ooh Geoffkhan, I'd have use for your soundfonts! As ThunderStorm said, AGS DC++ channel would be easy way to share them, or if you ever go to irc. :)

I really just need a bit of webspace I can upload them to.

Maybe I could use yousendit.com to give you a bit of a sample:

Monkey Island-style steel drums -- http://www.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=50811E398C46E124274F8AE855F81910

Took 5 seconds to upload. :)

Ack, the link isn't working!

And, can't wait 'til you get some webspace :)

Yeah, I wouldn't feel right about putting them on the Herculean Effort space because that's only for Herculean Effort stuff.

Is there any chance someone could put up an uploader similar to the 2dadventure one except without the 1 megabyte limit?

well, i could do it. but then it would be on my own computer here at home. and i only got 256 kbit/s upstream, thats 32 kB/s.

my system almost runs 24/7. what about a rule like "14 days max.", everything gets deleted after its 14 days on the server?

anyhow, here you go:

ftp://hx.bounceme.net

user: ags
pass: stuff

anonymous access is limited to listing of files.
use log-in for upload.

warning: server may shutdown anytime without prior notice

Okay, I've uploaded a few soundfonts onto hX's server.

It's in the "New Folder" because I can't rename stuff. :)

Enjoy, and thank hX!

Let me know if you need any more! :)

EDIT: hX, I realize that this server is actually your computer, so please let me know if I'm uploading too much stuff, and feel free to remove any files whenever you want.
