Stencyl will be a game maker with platform games in mind and a BSD license.

In May they will release some games and Stencyl itself won't be out until end of summer but the expectation is so high they had to open the forums:

I have heard of it before. I will be waiting, especially the strategy mod. Now lets just hope that this project lasts and will be released!
I am just a shallow stereotype, so you should take into consideration that my opinion has no great value to you.

Looks pretty neat :)  Hope it comes out soon...

I saw this over at PJ a few weeks ago (that's Pixel Joint to the un-informed)

While it looks awesome and fun, I don't have enough time to devote to my AGS game these days ... so I will be avoiding that for some time!

Looks like one to keep an eye on over the coming months, very interesting indeed.  I'm hoping it will be useful for testing out game ideas, tilesets etc pretty quickly, and then writing the final game from scratch.

Hm, I'm curious and will definitely take a look.

On the other hand, how is this better than Game Maker? And, given that they have five "basic templates" and require no programming, will it perhaps simply result in a large number of levels for otherwise-mostly-identical platformers and so forth? I wonder.

Buckethead

meh, I want it but it's not public yet. While it does say it will be public from the 20th of April. I assume it's done, so then why isn't it there? I demand an explaination!

Radiant

Ah, I just found the catch. It runs in Java. How's that for a performance hit?

I don't really understand the benefits of stencyl over say game maker 7 after reading the requirements.  You can do actual 3d in GM, mode 7 type stuff, it has plugins for FMOD and BASS available AND it uses directx for both 2d and 3d.  Why wait for a program that works about the same (based on the feature list)?  Even some of the development windows look the same!

Stencyl will be cross-platform (that's what I understand) and will have a BSD license.

This is what they say (Stencyl):

How does Stencyl differ from Game Maker?
Stencyl differs from Game Maker in the respect that it does away entirely with the need to script or define specific entity behavior thanks to the Kits. Kits define how all entities behave, and because of those users, just place an entity. This approach has many advantages and also some drawbacks, but we believe that the unique advantages outweigh the drawbacks.

But for a real comparison we'll have to wait

In the FAQs they mention you need no programming to make new games but you do to make new Kits, so it seems the door is open for creativity. How open? I wonder too.
