Nice discussion between Prog and Darth... The fireman entering in a burning building is a hero, or that is just his work? Maybe the real answer is that both arguments are right, and just some people who previously have the sense of heroism can join some works...
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

???. I really wish there was a way to show people on the net that you're being sarcastic without saying so. Anyone who saw Steve on Discovery will know that he treated his animals better than most people. I loved watching him when I was little. I guess I'lll use sarcasm tags from now on.

Yeah, without the tags you suck donkey balls at being sarcastic.

And no, that's not me being ironically sarcastic. You truly are an insult to people who actually know what sarcasm is and how to actually use it. Please, please, please, please for the sake of all that is holy don't ever try to be sarcastic again.

DG ... I could TOTALLY see Dr. Cox when I was reading your last post!  Well done ;)

Quote from: ProgZmax on Fri 22/09/2006 00:41:12Does the fact that it's a job make them any less heroes?  I mean, they still make the conscious choice to work a job they know could end in their death at any time in order to fight fires and save lives.  If anything, that makes them even more worthy of being called heroes, just like the men and women who died at the WTC trying to get people out.

I can totally see your point.

Don't get me wrong ... it's not that I don't TOTALLY admire and respect the men and woman of the police forces and fire departments for what they do.  I consider their actions to be incredible (and more than I think I could do maybe??)  It's just that ... I don't know ... when I hear that a fireman ran into a burning buidling I think, concious choice or not, I still expect to them to perform those actions.  If they can't/won't ... they shouldn't have chosen that profession.

I think, by my way of defining the word, a hero is somebody that does something extraordinary and totally unexpectedly at the risk of their own life (or by giving their life).  This is my definition of a hero.

Please understand I am not taking any of the "heroical" nature away from fire and police personel.  I just think, as I mentioned in my other post, that a true "hero" is a matter of perspective.  If you think somebody is a hero, then they are, regardless of what I, or others, might think on the matter.

Hence, Bindy calling her father "her" or "a" hero is totally acceptable in my opinion.

I mean ... Hitler was a "hero" to a millions of people back in the 30's/40's (and still has some today that idolize him).  It's just a matter of perspective :)

I think that hero has come to pass, as someone who does something extraordinary, out of their lifes' routine. Someting like that at leas, so I do understand what Darth is saying.

But of course noone can argue that firemen and policemen etc serve the community and are heros everyday.

Yep, hiding behind trees with speed guns really envokes the hero image in my mind.

Nikolas

Hm...

I was so sure that here in the UK most police(wo)men don't carry guns around. But you know best ;)

*cough*

SPEED guns, Nikolas.

You're just bitter.  Maybe you should stop speeding, Andretti!

I was a cop, and I sure as hell wasn't a hero. I did it for a paycheck.

The concept of a hero is one that is clouded with fantasy and storys of martyrdom. A rare person is a true hero.
