Suggestion about locked topics(?)

With an increasing number of topics becoming locked for one reason or another, some pages are being pushed to the second and third pages of certain threads, where they are less likely to be viewed, often encouraging "bumping".  Therefore, I have a question/proposition:  Would it be possible (well of course it's possible, but would it be ethical/feasible) to make locked topics appear at the end of the thread?

Esseb

By "locked" I assume you mean "pinned".

I agree with you and think there's far too many of them. Some of them would be better suited in the popular threads forum or shouldn't be preserved at all, like the "favourite non-adventure" one. In my opinion of course.

I think the more important question is if that, or the "Long overdue post your picture here" thread even, deserve to be at the top of the general forum. After 30 pages, I think the LOPYPH thread counts as "popular."

The last forum system we used used the "pin" metaphor for keeping threads at the top of forums. I'll have none of this "sticky" business enforced on us by the SMF forum system. I'm stuck in my ways and I like it like that.

I thought he meant locked. Because every time I come here there are a billion locked threads, and all the good ones... alright, there are no good ones. But the ones that people tend to read are at the bottom of the page. So I thought he was saying that threads should go straight to the bottom when they are locked.

And then they should get tested for AIDs.

Erm, guys, I think monkey_05_06 actually meant LOCKED threads, like he said in his post. If so, then yes locked threads can waste space and keep other threads down. However, once they are locked they can no longer be updated and usually fall off to the latter pages anyway.

If you meant stickied threads, then say so, man! :P

If threads get locked they just end up on the second page faster than if they weren't, I don't see the problem. I see no reason to relegate them to their own section, especially not to the last page of the sub-forum, if that's what the original poster meant with "end of the thread". They still have some value even if it's no longer possible to add replies.

If all locked threads just automatically fall through out of sight, who would learn the lesson the person who locked them tried to give? My guess is even more threads would appear just to be locked, because there's no example around.
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

I wonder how much longer people will keep guessing what this monkey fellow was trying to suggest, before he comes back to explain further.
I don't see how locked topics take up more space than ordinary topics, and either way it doesn't happen that often.

This thread is so irrelevant I feel like loc...
nah.

How about a junk-section where all the locked threads go, so you can view them and relive bad memories

Gilbert

Not a bad idea I think, but if that happens I don't think all the locked thread should be there, while it might bring good bad memory reading silly threads, we won't waste our time reading stupid threads, if all locked threads go there it would be a headache searching for something to laugh at read though the sea of stupid one liners. Moreover I think CJ purges threads once a while here so some of them definitely have to go.

What I think here needs is maybe an archive of real useful threads which got managed regularly, the problem is, seems that no one has the time and driving force to do that at the moment. (There're attempts, like this for example, but none of them gone permanent)

Evil

The problem with locked threads section is that people will start new threads like "Remember that time when.." and "WHY D1D t4i5 thread get l0ck-ed!?" I think they are better off left untouched. If you want to read them, skim the forums.

Haddas

theredoesn't need to be a "start new topic" option there

TerranRich

Then people will ask in this very forum or -- even worse -- the Beginners' Forum. No separate thread. Just leave locked threads the way they are.

Squinky

I think the best solution to this problem would be for us to all make out, and then maybe try some fingerpainting......
