As there seem to be quite a lot of people here who really know their stuff when it comes to computer problems, I thought someone could help me out with this one:

Internet is used by a family PC (Pentium II, 350 MHz)running Win98, four different users are set up, so the select-user-and-enter-password-listbox is shown after starting.

Now here's the problem:
Each of us used to use Internet Explorer 6 for browsing, but suddenly I seem to be the only one whose Internet Explorer seems to work correctly, which is rather strange, concerning that IE was installed only once and linked to for all users.

Now what does happen?
As I said, my IE works just fine. For all the other users, it doesn't seem to follow links anymore.

Example:
enter www.google.com -> Google site is loaded
enter a search keyword, press 'search' -> nothing happens

enter www.amazon.com -> amazon zite is loaded
click on 'books' -> nothing happens

Internet connection is established, as the sites aren't loaded from cache but from the proper location.

Does anyone know this problem? It's driving me crazy.
Oh, by the way - I use crazy browser, which basically is an add-on to IE, but the plain Internet Explorer works just as fine for me.

Do you have anti-virus software installed?  The symptoms sound just like the MSBlaster worm, but that shouldn't affect Win98 users.  I suggest getting the latest virus definition files for your anti-virus software and doing a scan immediately.

Sounds like a virus to me too.

remixor is right though ... it can't be Blaster if you're on Win98 but there are plenty of other nasty little viruses out there.

Also, on a semi-related not, I heard something yesterday about Microsoft discontinueing all support for Win98.  I doubt this would have anything to do with your problem ... just a heads up.

Hmm, I've updated AntiVir only some days ago.
I'll do it again though, just to make sure it's not a virus.

Oh, and DM - That's typical for Microsoft. On the other hand - Windows 98 is rather old, but it's the only OS that runs at an acceptable speed on this PC.

Thanks so far, I'll keep bugging you if the problem persists  ;)

Aw god. Just enter some middle-eastern chatroom, make some powerful friends and give them idea that whole evil is planted into Microsoft headquarters. You'll become a hero, world admires you and we can all sit and wait until something better comes out... from someone less non-caring. Or - XP, for instance, suggests you to send an error report, whatever you mess up. So find a million friends or so, and let them send a report every time somethings goes wrong... attaching mailbombs to reports will surely help to make your voice even louder... hehe ;)

I've found heard (heard, mostly, actually) 98 is the most stable OS of the latest... I hear XP crashing, our family PC's ME is in a mess (IE keeps crashing, and I can't reinstall the damn thing... the installer just skips the installation and reports that "these components coulcn't be installed. try again" or something...), 95 is so sticky sometimes (How come I still can find a computer with win95 in our school...) and NT is like 95... sorta... and 2000... like NT, better, but uncomfortable to me, as of all the system admin stuff and that...
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.
