Speaking of which, what happened to that other Game of the Year award we had here a month ago?
Are the categories the same as last year? If so, are we finally going to get clarification of what "best scripting" means? Because for some people, it refers to the plot, and for others, it refers to the programming.
Rather than limiting the "number of nominations across different categories", I think it may be better to simply remove games from a category if they are obviously unfitting (e.g. a "best manual" nomination for a game that doesn't have a manual, stuff like that). Otherwise, it may turn out that many people don't nominate game X for category Y because they all think that "surely somebody else will put it in category Y", and that's just weird.

Err, it was called "Best Programming" last year...

Are you volunteering to trawl through every release of this year and compile a list of those that have and don't have either manuals or in-game documentation? ;D

I'm suggesting that that won't actually be necessary. You only have to verify the top five games of the category, and take the sixth instead if one of those five doesn't have one.

Has it ever happened that the top ones for a category have not actually been eligible?
Awwww... The AGS awards are already being discussed and I have yet to play half of the games released this year.
When the official AGS awards website will be updated next month, to show the winners and nominees, would it be possible to show the 5 runners up who didn't manage to make it to the nominations, additionally to the awards winners and nominees for each categories? I generally trust the AGS awards to tell if I missed some great games in the previous year but last year I felt that only showing the winner and 5 nominees wasn't enough when the number of quality games increases every years.
You may find that such games end up as pick of the month: e.g. The Farm, Reactor 09, Sydney Finds Employment....

Hm, come to think of it, the only one that comes to mind (and even that one is iffy) is any remake getting nominated for a "best story"-type of award, since arguably they didn't write the story. But, like I said, that's iffy. Oh yeah, and last year's debate over the p3n1s award, but let's not go there again :-\
I suppose it's not necessary to restrict how people vote, then.
Scripting, to me, means programming/coding.
If your talking about plot then call it 'best writing'.
Is there a prize for "Most Anticipated Game Not Yet Made"?
If not there should be.
[cough]marionette[/cough]
I think Best Programming is the clearest of the two.
I guess Best Scripting could be confused with Best Writing, so best to avoid it.
Best!
I also think Best Sound and Best Voice Acting should be seperate awards, as the Best Sound nominations usually just end up being a list of games that happen to have voice acting, regardless of any actual funky sound effects/editing involved.
Other that that, the awards are solid.
Perhaps this should be stickied?
i would like to post my game but i need some teammates to help me
Then why not post here (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=30347.0)?
Oh, and how do you think are my chances to beat Art of Theft with _Access (or finishing _Access 2 in time)? "Minimal" or "non-existant"? :P
Hell, probably I'll even be shameless enough to polish and expand the game AGAIN and release it as 1.3 or 1.4 or something. Sounds a lot like something I'd do.
When does the voting website & nomination stuff become live?
1st January, I hope.
Well then that makes voting AGS awards the first thing I want to do next year..

But 'Best sound' sounds like it would include music too. There should be:
*Best use of Sound Effects (There is an actual movie award for this)
*Best Voice acting/ actor
*Best music/ use of music (this could be separate as, even if you have good music, it won't sound right if you don't know where to place them)
The reason that "Best voice acting" hasn't been a separate category before is that there simply were too few games with voice acting - and to be honest there still aren't that many. I think "Best voice actor" might work better, though I'm pretty sure half the nominess will be people from Blackwell Unbound.
So true Garage Gothic...
Well ,I'll agree to separating sound effects from music..

Well, since they're the
2007 AGS Awards, I'd assume that it's about games made in 2007, and hence the deadline has passed as of midnight.
Where can I find a list of games that have been nominated (if there is one)? I'd like to have played them all before I vote. Also if a game is nominated it means it is good, frankly, and I like playing good games. Simplicity at its best.

It's now the 11th and nothing's happening yet... or is there a separate thread that I've overlooked?

I remember reading somewhere that games had to be in the database (that is, showing up in the list of recently added games) by 31 December 2007 for them to count. Never mind - if you haven't already, put it in now so it counts for 2008!
Sorry for not being clear: I was on holiday! Now, I've asked CJ to set up the good old write-in nominations form and we'll start nominations ASAP. The eligible games will be everything on this page (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=digest&sortby=3&sortdir=1) from Alienation to Asterix and the Roman Underground.

Good to see this underway again!
SSH, I think some of the games in the list ain't 2007 releases, but added to the database in 2007 (just nitpicking...) ;)
Maybe, but that is what the criterion to be eligible is...
Hmmm, a week of voting and there's only been 32 people making nominations (thanks to you people, by the way!). This means there are still quite a few ties to get into the top 5 places in many categories and in the Best Non-player Character, the nominations have been so few and diverse that only on character has managed to reach the minimum 3 nominations necessary to make it to the shortlist! So, get voting if you haven't yet! Nominations close 9am GMT on Sunday!

Notice how Nelly Cootalot seems to appear under almost every award?
Shows how great a simple game can be! ^_6
I have to say, I'm surprised Art of Theft was not mentioned at all in Best Animation, Sound, or Music.
i would have tried to get my game in under backgrounds since i did spend alot of time on them but unfortunately since its only a demo i didnt know if it would be eligable for any of the other catigories
Well, poop. My game got nothing. *sob* Thanks a lot, AGS community! Now I'll have to drown my sorrows in booze tonight! I mean, I was going to get drunk anyway, but now I have to get drunk for a reason! And a bad reason, at that! I can't imagine I'll enjoy it at all! ... At least until I start drinking, I suppose.
Congrats to all who made the cut. I'm glad Nelly Cootalot made the grade (in a lot of categories at that! Well done Ali!), it was my favorite AGS game this year.
Also, I'm also a bit surprised that Art of Theft didn't make the grade. I thought it was a shoe in!
Oh well, off to the liquor store.

But don't let me get in the way of your drunkenness-to-be.
Well done to all those who made the nominations! I'm ashamed to admit that I'm one of those who haven't voted yet... that's because to be honest, I haven't finished many of the games I started playing in 2007 (with the exceptions of Asterix, Common Cold and 6 Days). What a bumper crop of fantastic games we had in 2007! Deciding who to vote for in some of the categories is going to be tricky.

Thanks, Rui and Paolo. I'm all sobered up and ready to find a way to go on living ;)
SSH, I know I didn't nominate any games, not even my own. But I'm terribly lazy and was hoping to be swept into power on a tidal wave of goodwill after everyone read my post in the "good deed" thread and realized what a noble human being I am!
In retrospect, it was, perhaps, not the greatest of plans. But, as I said, I'm lazy that way.
Oh well. Best of luck to all the people I just voted for... Only moderate luck to those I didn't vote for ;)
- Ponch
was there ever a "best cut scene" catigory?
No, but after discussion with Dave Gilbert I'm thinking of a late addition of "Best Defensive Use Of A Carcinogen" ... ;)
Also, I just noticed, but amazingly enough, I think this is the first time m0ds's Music has had a nomination (2 nominations, in fact!)
It was a tough choice for a lot of those categories, but I've voted! Well done to everyone, it's going to be an exciting night!!! All those games are superb, I've had a lot of fun playing them so it was hard to come to a decision over it. I'm thrilled to have 2 nominations :o so thank you for i guess being enthralled by the enchanting computeryness of MIDI music, whoever nominated it so :p And for having a little faith in me, I spose ;) I appreciate it a lot so here have a new game (http://www.pinkfrangipani.ch/) on me. I've been tracking again but it sounds like 6DAS on crack. SSH, Fatman was nominated for best music in 2003 :D And then Apprentice kept being re-released every year after. Hehe, only kidding ;) Still, it'll be interesting to see where this goes, so thanks! MAYE TEH AW4RDS COMENZ!1 ::)
VOTING UPDATE
Well, 64 voters in so far, and some categories have a clear leader, but there are still 7 categories with 3 or less votes in it (2 of which are currently tied), not to mention the fact that the next few people could all vote the same way and swing even some of the categories that have a larger margin at the moment.
Also, if you nominated, don't forget to submit your final votes, too, as your nominations don't count in the final vote!
Last year there was a torrent with all the nominated games zipped up in one convenient package. Any chance of something like that again this year? Finding and downloading the most recent version of each game is looking a bit tedious from where I'm sitting.

This is unfair. Secrets of Sultan Kanuni 2 should have been in "Best Background Art" nomination at least. http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/games.php?action=detail&id=889 This is too unfair...
As it turned out, the top 5 games in that category all had 8 nominations or more. Its hardly unfair that a game that didn't have enough nominations didn't make the shortlist. Perhaps if you'd posted in the FYC thread... >:(
Also, I asked CJ to put something on the front page, but he demurred... feel free to try and persuade him yourself. If someone posts a link on another web site, such as a game's own forum, I may have to disqualify the games as it would be unfair. It really should be those who have played most of the games up in the final vote who actually place votes, for things to be fair.
As for a package of all games, I'll see if I can arrange it.

I couldn't understand relation between number of downloads and beauty of backgrounds. My game's size was big (71 MB) and perhaps people avoid to download it because of its size. However, it doesn't mean its backgrounds were bad. Look at yourself Mods and tell me it should be in the list or not.
I don't request anything. I just want to tell you something is unfair here.
How is it unfair that you lost out on a popular vote? The only time people say that is when they are saying the voting was rigged. If you want to make such accusations, then you may want to consult a lawyer.
Sure, your backgrounds are really nice - but it's kind of up to you to make sure your game gets nominated. You can't just rely on people remembering that sort of stuff, which is why SHH creates the FYC thread so people can pimp their games and remind them of who is the "best"... Sadly your absence from that thread has left you feeling betrayed, but it really is no-one elses fault other than your own. I hope you have better luck in the future!

SSH, please look at the background art and tell me it is worse than other 5 nominations. You have 2 eyes please look :) You can't even discuss it. It is so clear. But if you are not agree with me, may be you can tell me details of how "best background art" should be. Go ahead tell me.
m0ds, you are right i can't rely on people remembering that sort of stuff. But i was doing my military duty and i couldn't connect to internet. May be admins should have got it nominated because it really deserves it.
To be perfectly honest dude, I'd be surprised if 3D rendered graphics ever topped the hard efforts of hand drawn backgrounds, which all 5 best background nominations use. It's just the way it is.
Proximity: my game, Revelations, wasn't nominated in "best programming" either, although it was a very challenging project to realize with AGS - it's a jump'n'run styled action-title with levels, an editor, guards that patrol see you, etc. Nelly Cootalot, on the hand, was actually nominated for "best programming" although it clearly is a simple adventure game (and a great one at that, no offense intended, please), yet I do say, it couldn't have been exactly very challenging to program, after all it's exactly what AGS is made for.
It's not fair, but that's popular vote. You don't see me or everybody else here whining over these things. I wouldn't have mentioned the above if you hadn't given me a reason to.
proximity: It's a pity that you were in the army (I've been there... bloody awful thing. If only Greeks and Turks (the military heads) would realise the wasted potential, then you and me wouldn't have wasted so much time... :(), but in a public vote, nothing can be really unfair, let alone 2 public votings (the nominations and now the normal voting).
It is a pity, but art is subjective. I'm sure that people didn't remember your game, and it's a really bad timing that you didn't post since the 7th of January, until today (checked your posts), but certainly nobody should be your "pimp", and certainly the mods job is not to remember any game and think about it in nominations because it may be "better" or "worst" in their own opinion.
also, keep in mind that the awards are mostly based on "popularity" rather than subjective criteria. Out of the 70 people voting, how many will have "eligible criteria" for voting in all categories?
m0ds, i am agree with you. I also prefer 2d hand drawn graphics than 3d rendered graphics. But you should know that making 3d graphics require hard effort too.
I'm sorry for this outburst but i couldn't control myself when i didn't see my game in the list :) Good luck all games in the list.
It has previously been suggested that a committee choses the nominations and the popular vote only applies to the final part of the awards. Or the other way around. No way is perfect, and my experience with awards committees is that usually one or two people make all the suggestions and then everyone else goes "yeah, I agree with them".
Revelation was 7th on the longlist and so didn't make the top 5, Murder in a Wheel only just lost out in Character Art, Blackwell Unbound was a vote short in two categories... lots of good games just miss out. Last year Reactor 9 had loads of nominations but didn't win any awards...

dkh, Revelations totally should have made that cut, imo. If I'd bothered to vote for anybody, I would have voted for that game for programming. I did a Spy Hunter style game in AGS so I have some idea of the coding hoops you must have jumped through to pull that game off. Amazing.
Sadly, I forgot to vote until it was too late. And popular vote is a fickle thing under the best of circumstances. But that's how it goes, isn't it? Don't stress about it, Proximity. Better luck next year, dude. Stick with it and sooner or later, you'll get more recognition :)
And SSH, is it too early for me to go on another sad, drunken bender about the total lack of love my game got? I feel it's time, what with the weekend coming up and all... but I'm not sure ;)
- Ponch
Sure, it's nice when something you worked hard on is recognized; even within a community setting. Heartland Deluxe received two nominations last year, while Unbound received none this year. Am I upset? Not really. People still download my game, and take the time to leave a comment or two. What more can I, or should I, ask for?
Maybe whatever I release this year, will pick up some nominations next year. Or maybe not.
Regardless, I'll still be making games. Hopefully people will still be playing them. :)
I think proximity just misunderstood how the nominees were chosen, so to be clear about it once again, they were voted by ags community not chosen by a small amount of moderators.
No no, i knew nominees were chosen by AGS community. I was just expecting people played my game to vote for nominee but i was disappointed.
That's why i said moderators should choose nominees. And then i realized it is so difficult for mods to play all games in the year and decide which one should get nominated. As a result, it's fine the way it is although some unfair things.
pimping's the solution ;)
We shouldn't call it pimping :). May be we can say bumping :)
Hmm, I remember when Other Worlds got nominated for Best Documentation and nothing else.
Now this.
We could start a thread about dissatisfied competitors and be done with it, since it always seems to crop up. There they could tell everyone how unfair it all was, and everyone can choose to ignore said thread.

We shouldn't call it pimping :). May be we can say bumping :)
I've been meaning to respond to this... I did a bit of analysis, and I don't think there's all that strong a correlation between "games being mentioned in the FYC thread" and "games nominated". There were a large amount of games this year that were either not mentioned in FYC at all, but nominated nevertheless, OR discussed at length in FYC and not making the cut for nominations at all. Public opinion may be subjective, but it is apparently not as easily swayed by something as simple as being mentioned in a thread.
Aside from that, it would seem that "best programming" (or, as it was called some years ago, "best scripting") is the hardest category to adjudicate. On the one hand, it is easy to say "I like this game therefore it probably has the best programming", which isn't quite the point. On the other hand, it is also easy to think "it was hard for me to program this game and therefore it has the best programming", which isn't really the point either.
Results are up
Remind me to have a separate voice acting category next year. And an AGS resource category.
Nice presentation, SSH!
Congratulations to all the winners and nominees. 2007 has been a very productive and good year. We had many many great games. Let's hope that 2008 will be as good or even better.
Yes, I agree, what an awesome year for games.
Very nice presentation, congratulations to all the winners.
Congratulations to winners and nominees alike, and thank you to SSH for making such a lovely presentation. I could never catch the previous AGS awards due to the time difference.
I love how Nelly Cootaloot dominates the awards by the sheer size of her, um, visual presence... ;D
Congratulations to all the winners! The results find me in huge agreement in all categories in reality! Those awards represent me largely I think! and music as well! Well done Thomas! :)
Congrats to all the winners (and nominees). Also, nice presentation SSH. It was nice to have a front row seat. It would have been torture had I been a seat filler somewhere in the back. All I would have been able to see was Nelly tearing across the stage like some adorable Godzilla, terrorizing the smaller sprites.
I really liked the inset shots of the backgrounds. Maybe next time you could do a small shot like that for each game in all the categories. Truth be told, it's been a while since I played some of those games and had a hard time remembering which one looked like what. Might be nice to see a little pic of each nominee.
So kudos to the winners. I hope you all make the most of the fame, the adulation, and the big cash prizes that come with every trophy. But watch out for the paparazzi and all the hangers-on that come with fame. We don't want you guys to turn out like Britney Spears.

I like the presentation this year hero, good job!
I haven't played as many AGS games this year so I didn't really think I was qualified to vote, but I will tell you how pleased I was to see Nelly do so well: very!
EDIT: Oh yeah, and congrats to all those who won, and comisserations (commisses?) to those who didn't. BUT THAT'S NOT AS IMPORTANT.
Congratulations to all the winners, nominees -- and indeed everyone who made a game in 2007! It's been another great year for games, so here's to 2008!
Also, thanks to SSH for running the Awards once again, and writing the ceremony!
EDIT: I've updated the AGS Games pages for the winners, if I've made any mistakes with any of the entries please let me know.
Well done to all the nominees and winners. And to SSH for presenting such an exciting ceremony. :)
Haha, well done SSH. And big congratulations to everyone!
Heehee, that was a great ceremony ;D Congrats to all winners and nominees!
Bravo! Top notch! Let's do this again next year, hm? ;)
Thanks for the award, commitee... but I'm still waiting for the award in the mail. >:( :=
Thank you very much for the award! I'm honored and proud! Thanks to all who liked the music in Blackwell Unbound and voted for it!
Now, when's the award show after party with champagne, drugs and girls ad libitum?? ;D
/Thomas.
Oops, forgot to thank everybody who donated .CHA files for their characters to appear. If I'd been more organised I'd do Jan's suggestion and have more screenshots. I hope no-one minds the thank-you speeches I wrote for them!
Also thanks to CJ for doing the underlying voting scripts, etc. And thanks to everyone who voted, especially if you did the right thing and actually tried to play most of the games first.
Hey, if everyone liked it so much, perhaps this years ceremony might win an award next year :D
well done peoples!
Likewise, thanks to everybody who participated! Four awards, w00t!

According to these definitions (http://www.americangirlscouts.org/AGSAwards/rules.php?section=definitions) (which appear to be a bit outdated and still list the p3n1s too), the Best Sound award includes voice acting.

Don't hold your breath, Akatosh. I'm still waiting for my Innovation award from last year!
Thanks to SSH for a very entertaining ceremony, and the real Nelly enjoyed it too (being particularly pleased with the Keira Knightly thing). I also feel that the committee-chosen awards were very well selected, congratulations to everyone involved.

Not wanting to add to your workload, but it might be nice to have samples in each category where such a thing would be possible. It'd be lovely to watch a 'scene' from a game in the dialogue section or see an animation in the character animation section.
Now if you'll excuse me, my collossal girlfriend is terrorising a japanese city...

It's true... Ali and I are dating and it's wonderful. If only Japan would recognize our love!
Congrats to everyone who even made a game last year. I just need to find the time in life to finish these games now!
Where do I download this ceremony?
There's a download link in the first post of this thread.
Congrats to all participants, and thanks to SSH for the original presentation of the award show. :)
This wont run on my computer. It keeps saying: error running 640 by 400 16 bit. can anyone post who the winners were?
It could be your graphic card/display/driver problem, try ticking the "use letterbox resolution" or something option in the game's setup and see if that works.
Aye, it's done...a list of the winners would be useful, save a lot of confusion I'm seeing in various places at the moment.
You mean like the one on the wiki (http://americangirlscouts.org/agswiki/AGS_Awards_2007)? ;)
If you have problems running the game, try running it in a window, or with letterbox resolution, or change the driver between the DirectX5 and DirectX9 ones...
i still have a problem with the fact that a better game beat mine hehe. kidding. the awards was done in a cool way, nice touch

Anyway, congratulations to all the winners. You deserve it! :D
The presentation was a really nice touch! though i was really looking forward to the irc meet this year :'( Well done on seeing it through mcormcack! The dialogue was really funny, seriously - I was surprised half of it wasn't submitted! And there was no bold on the wiki page at 5 o clock today, thats all :p Well done to all the winners!! And the nominees! And the 70 people of our 4000 community that voted! LOL. Wasters. :P I'm surprised Ben Jordan aers not win something :( I guess sex really doesn't get you anywhere, which is probably why Ben always suckseeds.
