Post by: on Sun 31/08/2003 20:19:20
I'm sure this has been done before but I would like to ask people what they think is the best game of all time, my personal choice has to be THE CURSE OF MONKEY ISLAND, it had everything, a brilliant plot, beutiful graphices and it was very funny. Any other nominations? :)

I'm going with Grim Fandango. That's my personal favorite, but I also think it's probably one of the only games that everyone can agree rocks.

my favorite as well, but not everyone seems to like it :

QuoteSomehow, I dislike this game, because of the crappy interface. It has really bugged me out. Though, the plot was great, but the graphics were in 3D*sigh*

(i just happened to read that, that's why i quoted it)

First of all, I have started my game, check out www.selfhigh5.uk.tt   Grim Fandango was good and I hope their is a second one. But the graphics couldn't compete with CMI even know it was made after. 3D adventure games usally are not a good idea with the possible exception of EMI. What kind of game was full thortle i never played it.

Space Quest III

Closely followed by grim fandango, but i think sq3 has more of a nosalgia thing coming into the equation which is why i like it so much. And its an awesome game.

I'd have to say Grim Fandango.  That game has one of the (if not simply "the") most fully-formed and well-constructed plots of any adventure I've ever played.  It really transcends genre, unlike (for example) most of Sierra's Quest series, or most any of the really early adventures.  I'm not putting down those games by any means, but I think Tim Schafer's writing was a huge leap in narrative construction for the medium.  Also, the dialogue is top-notch, and it avoids the sort of "computer game cheesiness" that we all accept and love but which, let's be honest, non-gamers would find rather dumb.  Grim's dialogue would fit perfectly in a real-life situation (if real life was anything like GF's world).  It had a great cast of characters, and there was true, palpable character development.  These deep and well-written characters also had an absolutely great team of voice actors putting out one of the best voice tracks in any game, ever.  And let's not forget the music, which is certainly my favorite computer/video game score, and undeniably one of the most original.  It combined wildly different genres of music including film noir, latin, jazz, and traditional film scores, just to name a few.  The game was, on the whole, beautiful.  Though the real-time 3d characters could have been more polished, they worked incredibly well, basically because they suited the concept of skeletons so perfectly.  The prerendered backgrounds were, of course, excellent, and the cutscenes were gorgeous and excellently directed.  I know all the cases for real-time scripted cutscenes in games like these, but for me that all goes out the window when I play this game.  The only possible flaw I could find with this game would be its interface, which was a great idea hindered by some technical shortcomings.  Essentially, Grim Fandango takes just about every possible aspect of a graphic adventure and raises the bar of excellence, combining them all into a damned near flawless package.

Other great ones for me would be Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, possibly Broken Sword or King's Quest VI.  I hear tons of great stuff about QFG2, but I've never played through that game.  I did just start it however.  Same goes for The Longest Journey; I'm in Chapter 3 of that, I think, which seems to be still pretty early in the game.

P.S. I assume this is more of a "favorite game" thing than a true objective "best game" thing.  Grim Fandango is certainly my favorite game.  Even so, I think it makes some pretty strong cases for being the best as well.  See above, of course.

EDIT:  I found this after I wrote this post.  It's Gamespot's feature on the Best Game of 1998.  I'd forgotten about that feature, but Grim Fandango won.  Here's the link:
http://www.gamespot.com/features/awards1998/gameofyear2.html

Some excerpts:
"With a script, musical score, and voice acting worthy of a feature film and an inspired artistic design worthy of display within a gallery, Grim Fandango far exceeds adventure game standards"
"Grim Fandango approaches perfection on every front. ...[it] will remain forever a masterpiece and forever a classic ... Grim Fandango marks one of the first steps the computer game has ever taken toward maturity and long-term staying power."  <- This is kind of what I was trying to say.
"Like a first-rate film or work of literature - indeed, like any work of art - Grim Fandango is timeless and destined to be enjoyed not just for months, but forever. "

EDIT2: also, it looks like GF won that year also for Best Music, Best Graphics/Art Direction, and Adventure Game of the Year (obviously).  Somehow, I doubt we'll ever see an adventure game sweep like that again for a long, long time (if ever).

Damnit, I love that game.

Am I the only one to say Sam & Max? It is the game which has actually made me laugh the most times. Moreso than even the Monkey Islands (the first two of which come second on my list).

My favourite is Monkey Island 2, but the best game I've played is Gabriel Knight 1.

GK1 had great interaction, great puzzles, great plot, and great integration of the puzzles into the plot.  Grim Fandango is superb, but didn't manage all of these things throughout IMO.

I've heard very mixed things about Runaway.  Some people say it's great, some say it's so-so.  Regardless, everybody seems to say it's definitely worth playing, and we know it looks great.

It's a new game, so you SHOULD be able to get it wherever you get games usually.  Depending on where in the world you live, though, it's just been released so it may not be everywhere yet.  It's been out in Spain for two years now, and they've been working on localizing it and securing worldwide publishers.  I know it was just released a matter of days ago in the US and I believe Britain as well.  Various other European countries have had it for anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months.

It's only recently been translated to English in Europe, so it may be some time/never before it's purchasable in the US.

Runaway was quite good, even though Monkey Island 2 is the best adventure game I've ever seen.

So...
1. MOnkey Island
2. Runaway
3. Zak Mckracken

Well, i have to vote for two.

1. Curse of Monkey Island, i felt this was an excellent game, plus it felt like an interactive cartoon.

2. Kings Quest V. I remember getting this game when CD-Roms were first being used on computers, and all I remember was my jaw dropping to the floor when i first played it.

Both of these games, i still go back and play, i think they are that good.

I stick by my belief that the NES classic "Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom" is the greatest adventure game of all time. Since no one else will agree with me on that fact,  I'll also say that Heart of China, the Monkey Island games, King's Quest 5 and Sam and Max are brilliant, well made adventure games.

Without a doubt, 'Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge' for me. Maybe it's me nostalgia-trippin', but whenever I replay that game I still get so much out of it. Everything about it is near-perfect I think. I love the graphics, the humor, the puzzles, the plot (which is dramatic enough to excite the player yet still quite light-hearted in parts), and of course the excellent MIDI music that runs throughout the whole thing. It can't be beat.

Respectable runners-up: 'Day Of The Tentacle', 'The Secret Of Monkey Island', 'Grim Fandango', 'Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis'.

Notice it's all LucasArts, but they were the best IMO.

Runaway is available in the US.  I'm playing it now. It's not bad.  Not great either.  The puzzles are a bit random, and there's no reason at all to care about the main characters, but the graphics are gorgeous and the  NPCs are colorful and fun - this game has drag dancers, people!

I'm at the beginning of chapter 5 right now.  I'll see how the rest of the game goes before I pass real judgement.

my mum got a PS2 for her birthday, but mainly only plays tetris on it at the moment, as Tekken makes her feel exhausted (even though she wipes the floor with everyone. Damn her! She hid the manule in her room, so only she knows the secrets!)

I got her a copy of Ico, but she sais she has to finish Tomb Raider before she can play that. Only she never plays tom raider because it keeps crashing (it's on my PC, not the PS2).

Ico is really really good.

Does D-generation count as an adventure game? That game is brilliant!
