The English are crazy

And mad. And lunatics. And then some.

One million dollars was the sum Rebecca Loos received for an intereview, which was broadcasted yesterday on Sky One and received attracted a near record two million auidience. For all who don't know, Loos claims she had an affair with David Beckham, England's and Real Madrid's football star. The whole thing started two weeks ago, when Loos confessed to the News of the World that the English star cheated on his wife with her. Ever since, it has been getting bigger and bigger. Thousand of women call the offices of local tabloids, confessing they had sex with Beckham. The climax was yesterday, in the interview where Loos revealed steamy details about her relationship with the football player. To prove that she isn't lying, she showed dirty SMS messages she received from Beckham, and said she knows as intimate spot on his body that only a women he has slept with can now. All of this fiasco was followed closely by millions of Brits.

I remember from the time I spent in England that most of their press consists of tabloids. Even the 'serious' newspapers often have larger-than-life titles claiming to have a spicy detail "Prince William's New Girlfriend", or a new revelation about Princess Diania's death. People seem to be more interested in these cheesy in details then the real news.

And this is what I want to know. Do you, CJ, m0ds, custard and all other Englishmen really care who Beckham is screwing? Or any other such piece of news that so often puts England in a frenzy about the most ludicrous. Is the average English person interested in all the nonsense the English press produces? ARE YOU REALLY CRAZY?

Not bothered really, all tabloid trash. From what i have seen though, he could do a lot better! :P

The Sun (one of the major tabloid news papers) for example, has a reading age of 12. So its no big words etc, filled with lots of trash :)

It's true. Most of our press is crap. The Sun is the most popular newspaper (apparantly) which says it all.

It seems that whenever someone gets successful over here (such as David Beckham), then the reporters have to dig as much bad stuff up about him/her as they can. Perhaps it's a form of jealousy, I don't know.

The sad thing is that people believe it all. The newspapers get away with printing any old crap, & the public lap it up.

I couldn't care less about David Beckham's personal life. What happens in his life is his own business.

I don't really see why people go on at Beckham so much - as he said himself (I think), he ain't no Einstein, but then Einstein couldn't play football like him.

Personally, I care for celebrity culture not at all. This is because I avoid mobile phones, soap operas, football and all other retardation-enhancers, and keep my mind sparkly and active with exotic drugs, books and movies.
I think the celebrity worship culture can be viewed as a kind of modern pantheon of the gods - no afterlife for todays masses, their heavan lies on earth, and celebrity is it. Celebrities are more attractive, successfull, richer, their life is an endless stream of parties... or so the slack jawed masses are assured by the media. The celebrity bibles that are the tabloids and media in general keep this stoked, because reading about someone who is better than you'll ever be is suerly better than being nothing...
Ms. Loos being boffed by Beckham is kind of the equivelant of Zeus taking the form of a bull, coming out of the sea and diddling a maiden on the beach.
I'm in a strange mood, today...

Hey, I just realised, for the benefit of SSH & I, shouldn't it be the BRITISH are crazy? :P

EDIT: Oh yeah, & AGA too. The Welsh are awesome, and I wish I were Welsh...

Flippy_D

Tabloids are a damn shame, and should just be burned. I don't think anything has fscked up the national conciousness more.

The Independent is easily the best newspaper in Britain.

Are the Scottish similar to the English in this matter? I remember thre Scottish press seemed a lot more serious to me when I was there.

Creed, the celebrity worship culture exists everywhere - in Hollywood, in Israel, and in Beckham's current home - Spain. Yet the Spanish sports press (which sells by the hundreds of thousands a day), which I follow closesly, didn't write anything about Beckham's cheating, or Figo's cooking, or Zidane's singing. It seems that England brings this worship to new extremes, at least on a national level.

I aint Crazy... At least I dont think I am... I mean just becasue i have the occasional conversation with a sparkly elf....

Anyhoo... I'm not sure anybody really believes Rebbeca Loos (or the Sleazy Senorita as the Sun calls her) She says 'Becks bedded me cos he was stuck in a sexless marriage' I suppose thats why hes got two sons and there are currently pregnancy rumors surrounding the Beckhams.

I think the reason people care so much is because David Beckham has a family man image and is somebody people look up too. People must think if his marriage is failing, what hope do we have...

I really couldn't give a crap about who Beckham has slept with, but there are a lot of people who do. There's a strange fascination with following the lives of celebrities - I suppose a lot of people look to celebrities as role models, and are shocked if 'their Beckham' has been adulterating.

The tabloid press is necessary, though - a lot of people don't want to have to think for themselves, and being told what to think by sensational headlines is at least a good way of giving them an opinion.

The Sun is even credited with throwing the election result in 1992 by basically telling people to vote Conservative.

It's the same papers & stories up here, as far as I know. There are a few Scottish-only papers which are alright in this area, but then again, they aren't tabloids.

There aren't really many differences between Scotland & England, at least not as many as people think. I tend not to think of them as two different countries generally, more as Britain as a whole.

Now c'mon AGA, that HAS to be abusing your power a little bit :P. Besides who would believe I actually said THAT?

Nacho

I think that happens everywhere... I hate that press, not for the press itself, because I always have the chance to switch my TV off (I do it when they broadcast that crap), but because if there is people paying that sums to get that interview is because they get profits, ergo, there is a lot of stupid people following that crape, ergo, a lot of people is stupid (or has a sense of amusement that I consider stupid...).

I don't like to see that... Realising your country is full of people who is really interested in the latest bed conquest of a singer/actor/sportman is disturbing...  :P There is a lot of people to be taken as a model by many amazing things, not just that.
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

Archangel (aka SoupDragon)

I stick to the Telegraph- although it's still quite obviously biased towards the Conservatives, there's enough real news in it to make it readable. The Times is much the same. The Guardian and the Independant are acceptable; anything else I'll often pick up in the staff canteen at Safeway's to have a good laugh at ^_^

Hehe it's sad really, theI want AGA's lengths AGA will go to to convince himself that it's OK to be Welsh. Oh the insecurities  :P

I think it's disgusting. Beckham is a role model to so many young people and it is his responsibility to ensure he remains a good role model. How dare he break the trust placed in him by so many people? How dare he give this message to the world? He ought to be ashamed of himself.

He's better off dead now.

Peter Thomas

I hate Beckham. The more he gets in trouble for sleeping with women (whether it's true or not) the better...

I hope he loses his multi-million dollar soccer contract, and all his sponsers turn on him and try to kill him. Won't happen, but hey - who are YOU to stop me from dreaming?
Peter: "Being faggy isn't bad!"
AGA: "Shush, FAG!"

MrColossal

Is that what Jesus would do, peter?

i don't know if you're serious yufster and i don't care, but why is he a role model? he's just a dude that plays a sport. If I take on some random guy in my neighborhood as my role model it isn't his reponsibility to make sure he does things good so I grow up right... He's just a dude chillen and I'm the one with the problem.

Who cares! As long as he comes back to Rangers!

Strangely enough the rash of tabloids can be partly attributed to Britains size and the fact it industrialised before the rest of the world, meaning that interests could far easily be concentrated in London, for example the National press in Fleet Street, which later makes it easy to come under the control of one body, in this case Big Papa Murdoch.
