END OF TAPE
Finished it earlier, I must say it exceeded my expectations. I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it as a platformer, even if it was by Tim, but I did.
Most definitely on my to buy list..I especially loved the intro.. :)
Downloading know, by the way the first bit torrent link offers a normal free download too :)
I just recently purchased the official Playstation Magazine the other day and it only had a video of this game. But the video looked amazing. The characters looked great and was in an art style i like.
I would really like to test this thing out (i have DSL) so i might as well download it.
Shawn
Apparently my computer isn't hardcore enough to play it.
I like this. I never was very interested in it previously, but the demo is certainly cool. It's very well polished, and runs very smoothly on my machine. The cut-scenes are excellent, and the overall feel of the game is quite nifty.
Only thing I could complain about are the controls, I guess. Not that they're any different from other 3rd person console platformers, so it's not exactly a complaint about Psychonauts itself.
I may have to buy this.
Looks great!
Possibly a bit too collecty-itemy...
I notice Yufster got her name in the credits. Way to go!

That's hilarious.. can you elaborate? I can't play it.
It just says

I just checked over at Idle Thumb Forums and apparently Chris Remo (Remixor) is also in there for being a playtester.
Ouch! My head hurts more than after finishing Grim Fandango.
This cartoonier-than-cartoons! style isn't universally likeable, I guess.
Quite cool game it is... but.... it's for kids.
Wow, that was AWESOME! Highly fun and original and had heaps more character and story in it than most platformers. Seems almost like an adventure game. Oh, and I really liked the style of it, better than most boring realistic 3D.
I loved it long time.
So no groceries for me the week it comes out.
Don't read if you haven't finished the demo!
Spoiler
I love how you don't really finish the level mario style with fireworks and victory music but instead you get there and nothing is there for you because aparently Raz did it faster than anyone else, and then a bit of the future plot is revealed. The story itself is embedded as the ending of the level, and that's just beautiful.
Based on these recomendation, I think I must go and check it out. I am a fan of platform games if they are done well, and this one is by Tim, so it must be good.
I don't usually like 3rd person platform games, but since everyone seems to love it, I'll give it a try.
My useless two-cents-
The game was undeniably fun with an amazing array of well-designed, well-animated, characters each with their own interesting personality. I love how the story is built into the game, with little bits of character popping out during the levels, especially in the case that netmonkey mentioned.
There are a few things that really bugged me, though.
The camera, for one, is just as annoying, if not more annoying, that all the other 3D platformers. I found myself fighting the camera many times.
The "figments" are quite difficult to get sometimes because of how tough it is to get a proper sense of perspective on a 2D sprite (esp. a moving one) in a 3D world.
I wasn't sure of the point of the "mental baggage." I'm sure you learn later, but I didn't like the way too long cutscene of the bag chumming it up with the tag when you unlocked one.
This game requires far too precice of a degree of movement than four arrow (WASD) keys can give you. I'm sure this game will be quite a bit more playable on XBox... too bad I don't have one.
A few of the platforming mechanics... most notably, swinging on the rods and tightropes, just didn't work out very well. Too slow. It took me a while to figure out to press 'F' to turn around. Not very intuitive.
Finally, good god there's a lot of shit to collect in this game. That may appeal to a lot of people, but I'm too obsessive compulsive to play a game like that. I pay more attention to making sure I didn't miss anything than I do to having fun. Not necessarily a fault of the game, mind you. Just a way that this particular game doesn't jive with this particular gamer.
All in all, the game could be great, especially if the camera gets ironed out, but with the fast approaching release date, I'm afraid that's not going to happen. Too bad. There are a few things holding this game back from being up there with other comparable platformers like "Ratchet and Clank" and "Jak and Daxter" (one of those things being the comparatively tiny budget, but even ignoring that...) but the game has so much potential with the focus on story, great characters and dialog, and classic Schafer humor.
I hope it does well. For the sake of proving to publishers that gamers like stories in their games. Good ones.

The default setup is retarded in my opinion. When you "invert" both axes of the camera movement in the options it makes a lot more sense - the mouse steers the character, just like a FPS.
:-[
Anyone else have problems running it? After the intro movie plays it goes to the loading screen and then it crashes out with the following message box:
---------------------------
Encountered Error
---------------------------
(null), line -1
Crash: 0xc0000005
If you have VS.NET installed, you can try to attach the
debugger
Otherwise, click OK

Modgeulator, I get that error too. It's so annoying, I know my PC is strong enough to run the demo (I mean, I ran Half-Life 2 at excellent settings fine!)... It's quite annoying. I've tried looking around the net for help, but have only found people encountering the same problem.

Yeah, I immediately inverted both axes because, as you said, the default is retarded. After inverting, moving around in open spaces feels quite natural and fun. But that wasn't what I was talking about.
You have to fight with the camera when you get into tight spaces. Even if you go into one of the little bunk houses, it's tough to see what you're doing because the camera doesn't always zoom into the house with you.
But more annoyingly, the camera always drifts back to the default zero-incline position. This is terribly annoying when you're trying to run up a hill and angle the camera upwards to see where your going, but the camera wants to zero back to looking horizontally... This makes it very difficult to see what's awaiting you at the top of the hill.
Yeah, the defaults were silly. The first time I moved the mouse I realised it wasn't very good, so I moved the attack button to the keyboard and didn't touch the mouse again, no problem fighting or controlling the camera with the keys, with that setup I quite liked the controls on the whole.
Psychonauts rules! :D
I thought it was a pretty bad port of a game made with consoles in mind.
From what I've been hearing Tim Schafer say about this game it made me think it was going to be something hugely original. It just seemed like a pretty run of the mill platformer to me. I'll probably buy it though since I'm into comparable games like Jak & Daxter.
The world it's set in seems pretty interesting and weird, and the graphics are pretty decent.
I hope the full game clocks in at way more than 12 hours playing time.
As a lover of good platformers and an even bigger lover of all things Schafer, I want to play this BAD. But it's not going to happen any time soon, what with this rickety old pc of mine.
It'll be a shame not to have a full collection of Schafer games for the first time in a while. I might buy it anyway just to hang the box on my wall.
Woah nelly, anyone getting this message?
"Please insert your original "Psychonauts Demo" CD/DVD to start the application."
it was working yesterday...
OMG THAT WAS GREAT! I've now played the demo through three times and it seems to be an insanely good game. I weren't really expecting much - just your regular platformer with a glued-on plot - but this was so much more. Sure, I got to see only the demo, but it really made me want more. I wouldn't have even thought of bying this game before I played the demo. Not it seems like a must ::) In case there's still someone here who hasn't tried it out, I really suggest you should.
I'm glad I'm converting the hethens! ;D
The music is great. You could just stop in the camp and hang out while listening to the music. There's not many games that do that.
I've converted people at work.
Every time somebody has kids running around the store mindlessly, I gently usher them over to Psychonauts and they stay glued to it for ages.
Man, what a game! I have not been let down. I love it to pieces!
After all this hype and excitement, you've only said TWO things about the demo Salks, and those two things are like, the shortest comments you've ever made...
QuotePsychonauts rules! :D
and
QuoteMan, what a game! I have not been let down. I love it to pieces!
You're the resident Pscyonutter, I refuse to play it until I've at least read a two paragraph review by you, Yufster...! Weren't you waiting years on this? :P If you've got one hiding somewhere tell me where I can read it!!
Very well.
Psychonauts is the best, quirkiest, awesome game I have ever played. So far. I mean the demo rocks. The opening logo, both of Double Fine and of Raz and the Majesco logo... they sent shivers of delight up my spine. It's so cinematic and gorgeous, you simply have to experience it yourself to understand.
The intro is great. At first I thought it was a little too long, but then I realized that it has to explain the story for people who haven't spent the past five years hanging on to every word Schafer has said about it, so actually it's probably the perfect length. The characters leap out of the screen, and the environment is simply awe-inspiring. The acting is awesome. The animation is awesome. The music is awesome. The gameplay is fun and awesome. Awesome!
The humour is one of my favourite parts of this game. It's so different, so excellent. Man, I've got to start using words other than 'excellent', 'awesome' and 'different', or people might think this game is limited.
Now download and play the demo NOW, before I kick your ass...tral projection right outta here!
Oh by the way Psychonauts helped me overcome my bulimia and cured my cancer. A little miracle with every Installation File!
Game's out tomorrow!
On the PC, $30 = £15.75. Bargain!
In the US, if you preorder with an EB store you get a pack of Psychonauts playing cards. I'm getting me down there and getting me some this lunchtime.
Gamestop may still have t-shirts too...
Woot!
Great review down at Gamespot:
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/psychonauts/review.html
Well, it's now time to get it, and you can also get some cool shirts and junk from Double Fine:
http://shop.doublefine.com/ ;D
OMFG Richard Horvitz is doing voice acting for this game, definatley a must for me
Oh well, there's a new version of the demo out and an 11mb patch available. I've tried it, now I'm getting a BSOD just after the intro when you first enter the camp. Tried updating my video driver but that just causes the game to freeze right at the intro... I think I'll be getting the XBOX version somehow...
So is the game out yet or what?
All the stores around here said it had a release date of the 19th, but none of them have it.
Never though this would be a game I'd have to chase around.
edit: Fark it. If the stores won't accomodate me, then screw em. I ordered it straight through Double Fine, which probably makes my copy Double Extra Fine. Plus I'm getting a totally rad patch for my jean jacket. Try to resist me now, ladies.
I'm still waiting for it to arrive at EB - they keep saying "tomorrow".
The xbox version was in yesterday...
Oh, I forgot about this thread... Mostly because I WAS PLAYING TEH GAME!!!11 ;D
(http://images.cellosoft.com/netmonkey/temp/psychonauts.png)
So has any consensus been reached on the quality of this game yet? After all the pre-release fuss everything seems to have gone a bit quiet about it.
Speaking of which, I can't help suspecting that the seeming complete lack of awareness about this game from the percentage of the population who're unable to recite Tim Schafer's entire career biography on command is a less then promising signal of this game's commerical prospects.
Not surprising, but sad if true.
This game is incredibly awesome.
Laugh-out-loud funny, surprisingly large amount of dialog (for a platformer), and the artistic style is simply... amazing.
I recommend this game to everyone.
I want to share references with people!
That is a nice watering can.
I don't like digging up old threads, but since this game just came out, i figured it was still relevant to post about.
I bought the game last night for the Xbox and have to say it is (so far) wonderful. I only played for about an hour (because i bought Doom3 also), but it really shows that a lot of love went into the production of the game.
The graphics, even on the Xbox, were very sharp and colorful, and as i would like to say breathtaking. The game is alot of fun, and the controls were really well tuned. I usually am not a fan of cut scenes in video games, but some of these were really funny, and also the music was splendid. I can tell you this was money well spent.
So anybody out there who hasn't picked up their copy. I urge you to go out and get it. You won't be dissapointed.
I didn't want this to come off as a review, but i guess it did. I'm proud of Mr. Schafer for this game. Well Done!!
5 out of 5 Blue Cups :)
Anyone have any confidence this will be released in Australia? I have a PAL Xbox and a Japanese Xbox, and it's too much bother to get one modded.
Import a european game when (If?) that comes out if it doesn't in Australia?
There were rumors that they were selling the game in New Zealand, at least the PC version. I think the XBOX and PS2 are going to take a lot longer.

It's about damn time you bought the game! :P
Perfect timing, I've just started replaying it! :D
