GRANDIOSE AGS CHAIN-CHESS GAME
1. What is a chain chess game?Participants will be divided in 2 teams, the Black Team and the White Team (BT & WT). The first player of the WT will make the first move, then the first player from the BT will make her move, then the 2nd player from the WT will have his turn, etc. We don't stop until the game it's over!
Like a Chain Story, just applied to chess!
2. What do I need to participate?Just basic knowledge of chess rules. If you want to learn with a Java tutorial, click here (http://www.chessmagnetschool.com/learnchess.php).
3. I know the rules but I've played only two games in my life and lost'em both!Don't worry! Each team will have a mix of experienced and novice players, everybody's invited!
4. So, where/how do we play? Here on the AGS forums! After each move I will post a diagram like this
(http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/6336/chessst0.png)
You can then state your move using the Algebraic notation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_chess_notation) (
e.g. "pawn in e2 to e4") or simply taking advantage of MS Paint
(http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/6506/chessst1.png)
5. How much do I have to ponder my move?1 day per move is the time limit. After that you'll be skipped and the next player in your team will move for you.
6. Yay! Where do I sign up?Just post here, clearly stating that you want to be part of the game!
7. How are the teams picked? When will the game start?I'll randomly divide the participants in two teams. The game will start as soon as we'll reach a decent amount of player (10 would be optimal).
spelling errors? unidiomatic english? Write me a PM!
Jim Reed reporting, capt'n!
Nevermind me, I'm just posting here, clearly stating that I want to be part of the game!
I've copied out the unicode symbols for all the pieces. Maybe they'll come in handy :D Below:

I'll have to pass on the actual chess bit...
Might show you all up :P
I'm in as well! :D
I'm in, I guess, although I prefer Kriegspiel.
Haven't read what it is yet but I heard the word chess.
You know I'm in ;D
I'M IN. Expect no mercy!
I'm in as well!
I can't see any way this won't be a complete mess and I'm rubbish at chess.
Therefore I am in! ;D
Number 3 of your list is exactly my chess knowledge, so consider me in!
Cool Idea! Things are a bit hectic at the moment so I'll pass on the game, but I'll certainly observe.
HEY! Over here :D
If it isn't too late, I'd love to enter this, too!
As the topic was started two hours ago, I think there's still plenty of time to join. :P
This thread is mushrooming! Yay for participants! Keep coming!
With good luck your friends can soon lose the game before you get a chance to make a move :D
I'm guessing that it's possible to input a ready made game in any chess program on the net, or outside and have it play your move, right? Don't do that!
I'm NOT in! I know next to nothing about chess, but I do find this VERY fascinating!
Holy salsa, it's chained chess, my favorite game!!!
I'm in!!
Fear me, for I am in as well.
It's not too late to be in is it!? I think I won a chess game once! (He had never played before.) (He was ten.)
Chess? That still around? It baffles me that people can keep playing the same game for centuries without significant modding, it's like bloody Counter Strike. Once they patch in custom starting formations, team killing (prerogative of high ranking pieces) and get rid of that fiction-breaking stalemate mechanic maybe I'd be up for it. Kidding aside, I'd be quite interested in trying out some of the chess variants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_variant) listed on Wikipedia, but none of the chess players I know have been up for it so far.
Now, Stratego on the other hand, there's a real game! *ducks the barrage of flying chess pieces* ;)
While we're waiting for the late entrants, let me share with you a nice and easy way to post your moves
Chessiquette
(or "how to post your move")
Three easy steps, lads & lasses!
Once is your turn you will be given a diagram like this:
(http://www.chessvideos.tv/bimg/1xyokn2y14oor.png) (http://www.chessvideos.tv/chess-diagram-generator.php?fen=rnbqkbnr/pppp1ppp/8/8/4Pp2/8/PPPP2PP/RNBQKBNR)
please note the white dot at the bottom left, meaning "white to move"
1. Study the diagram
It's time to use you gray matter! Study the diagram and decide which move you will play. You can use a chessboard to aid your thoughts, but no computer or chessbooks or friends are allowed!
2. State your move
For example, Knight g1 to f3. If you don't like to use long algebraic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_chess_notation) you can mangle the above mentioned picture with MS Paint to express your will.
3. Click on the diagram
You'll be redirected to a chess site where you will find the given position. Modify it according to the chosen move. Warning, the diagram editor allows even non legal moves, so be careful!
4. Copy the link and post it!
Click on "generate diagram" (remember to change "side to move"), copy/paste the forum code and you'll obtain something like this
(http://www.chessvideos.tv/bimg/1k9w0c8rvpe6.png) (http://www.chessvideos.tv/chess-diagram-generator.php?fen=rnbqkbnr/pppp1ppp/8/8/4Pp2/5N2/PPPP2PP/RNBQKB1R)

Your making all this diagram shammingham overly confusing, but you can still count me as interested to take part in this lunacy.
Oh wait, I just realized I'll be gone for the next week with either no internet connection or only the pathetic shadow of one, so I'll have to withdraw myself from the competition :( bummer, it looks like it would be deliriously fun.
I'm in! For once I can be with players as crappy as myself, and maybe even possibly reach a stalemate!
Is too late to enter? I'd like to join as well :D

Indeed you (and anyone who wants to late join) can do so. This is valid until the end of round 1 (i.e. all the playes have moved at least once).
Welcome then, Virgil, you will fight for the glory of the White Team.
Well, since you now have an odd team, I'll gladly join. :P

Once you take into account the quality of my pixel art, you will soon realise that this "privilege" is comparable to a punch in the face.

Right back where we were before ::)
We could have taken their not covered(?) Rook, which was the whole point of moving the knight to that position, attacking Rook and King, called fork (here in Germany, at least).
Sorry, and I know, it's just a game and all that, but the frequency of white team screw-ups makes me wonder if there's still a way to win this for us.
Yeah, I know it's regress, but after spending some time looking at the alternatives, I decided that the balance was too close, and that there were a host of people who'd cut my throat if it resulted in disaster.
However, I suffer from an unfortunately bad case of rook-blindness, and so completely missed the possibility to take the rook.
Note: I really do seem to suffer from this Rook-blindness, as I have lost many games this way. :-\
I'm sure our secret network of undercover agents in the black white team hasn't yet been discovered.
Well, shite, sorry for missing out on my turn guys. I'm going away for a week tomorrow, so I'll be missing my next turn as well, but I don't want out of the game! :-/

First vote for resigning this.
Edit: continuing is utterly pointless, all we can do is move pawns until they're taken. It's Sparta, but the 300 are all cripples.
You'll either come back with your shield or on your shield Khris D:
Do the second, but with style.
I'll second the resignation.
Any more takers?
i don't mind.
There's no challenge anymore, just dancing around the board. I agree with starting the next round.
Black wins!
Errr, are you moving Intense? Or should we wait for ye olde bigge poll to end?
The board could have some stalemate potential imho, but it will be a tad difficult to trick black into it.
Ryan, true, I'd quit too, but it's not my call, or yours. It's up to the guys of the white team. If they will, we'll go on forever.
Whoops, real life in the way again!
I'd say give it a couple more hours for any more votes for/against after which we can finish or i'll move.
I say we resign yes. It's pointless it just needs 10-12 moves at max, but there's no point really wasting them, it's 2 rooks, a queen, and a bishop against a king. We're talking about the ultimate comeback.
Actually we could easily win this in 3 moves.
I'm okay with resigning.
I'm for resignation too, there's no ground to win/draw this. That is more than the majority of the White team, sooooo....
white resigns (0-1)
Congratulations Black Rebel Brigades!
Check first post (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=41637.0) for an animated gif of the game. Let me paste an evaluation graph of the game made by chess engine Crafty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crafty):

Thanks again to Atelier for trophies and you all for participating! o/ for chess!
Yeah! Though I must admit I'm a bit sad I didn't get to strike the fatal blow :( Go us!
Yay! But... what does this graph actually show?

It's quite similar to a stock market graph: it shows the evaluation of the board after each move; conventionally a pawn is worth "1 point. Blue line goes up? White is winning! Line goes down? Black is winning!
E.g: by looking at the graph we can say that after black fifth move (5,5 on x axis), white had a good position (line goes up to 4 points), but we failed to capitalise on our move (6), so the line went back to almost 0 (equal position).
Just gonna quote myself here:

I had an idea for the next round; we could sort the team members according to their timezones to up the chances of them being awake when it's their turn.
Good idea, but when someone is skipped, the order will get mixed up.
A better solution is that everyone, who is not going to be online for his move has to state that in the thread or pm bicilotti (or whoever is going to be the host).
Ok, little puzzle / post-mortem analysis for chess aficionados...

Black just played ...Qg5 ...f6.
What's a very clever move for white?
edit: sorry wrong digram
Actually, the move that lead to this situation was black f6. On topic: I have no idea :(

Dude, do that second move and look at the consequence. That black queen is going down.
EDIT: Apart from in a couple of cases, but then, its a free bishop.

He'll just trade queens and then move his bishop.
The diagram bici just edited it to has the solution d4 on the other hand :p

And she can still get our queen. ;)
Yes, d4 would attack the black queen and the black bishop, forcing the black player to sacrifice one piece to save the other.
As for the next round, I'd propose to set up the teams, and let each team discuss and post their best move in a day. The bonus is that not all team mebers need to be present for the group to decide their move. I suppose having seperate rooms for talking out strategy on IRC would do the trick (and populate that lively place even more), for each team. Ofcourse, nothing is stoping either team to set up their own communication channels.
I figure this mode of play would eliminate most of the bad moves, as the more expirienced players would spot bad moves (from the less expirienced team mebers) and propose something else. This is me referencing some realy bad moves that ruined the game (or made it to easy, depending on white side you were on) we just played.
The only two bad sides I can see is that people might have difficulty agreeing in the time frame given (a day) or one team having an exuisite chess player that the other team, even combined, can't outmach. (iI'm looking at you, italian guy =P )
So, dunno, maybe having the host play the move for the team that didn't meet the deadline (if it didn't), to solve the first problem, and ranking all entrants by their skill, spliting them up in a balanced way to the teams would help the other problem not showing up. Which leads us to figuring out how to rank the players.
Heh, maybe we could all be honest and try to approximate our playing level, or having a set of ranked chess problems that each player must try to solve, and basing their rank on the results.
Well, ofcourse, I'm not hosting it, so take it all just like a suggestion bic.
Having the team play as a whole would definitely eliminate those poor judgments or over eagerness to take a valuable piece just to have it sacrificed afterward... "TAKE THE QUEEN.. QUEEN FOR QUEEN!" I'm not sure who that guy was... ::) haha
Anyway, if the team did play as a whole, I'd have to bow out of the match. I don't have a whole lot of time to communicate on IRC and stuff lately.
But I'd gladly play again if the next round plays the same as this.
I second Ryan's opinion. It's better this way, even if nobody did what I expect them to. That's the magic of the game. :D
Yeah, just see this round as warm-up and get the real game started!
