last night, apple revealed their newest technologies, the itnes phone, and the ipod nano. The nano is really really small. I was just curious as to whether anyone shared my opinion of smaller is not necessarily better whn it comes to technology, when it becomes too small to use properly, it sucks a bit. here is a link to find out somemore:

Yeah I agree, I know guys (big guys) who aren't able to sms properly because of the small buttons on the phone.
While I must admit I find the technology interesting ... being a person with big fingers I find that, the smaller they get, the harder of a time I have using them.

Congratulations! That day has come! (specifically, it was the same day the iPod was released) I don't know what you're talking about. The iPod has always allowed mp3 in addition to offering their own proprietary format (that you can turn off with the click of a check box.) I've never had a single file in this format (can't even remember the name) and I've been using my iPod for over three years. Rest assured that any mp3 you have that doesn't have some weird microsoft-designed DRM can be placed on an iPod. (and even the DRM-ed ones can be used with just a quick burn and re-rip)
And you don't have to use iTunes. There are other programs out there that do the same job well. But iTunes makes synching your iPod and music collections so easy that there's no reason not to use it if you have an iPod. Don't be mad at Apple for putting out a product and ALSO making the best tool for interfacing with that product.
They wouldn't have such a domination on the market if they made their customers jump through hoops to use their product.

This is actually great news, as I rather like the iPod's design and functionality. I'm not one of those "anti Mac" guys. I was told by a friend of mine (who owns an iPod and is, usually, a good source of information) that you
have to use iTunes and you must "convert" all your mp3s to AC3 (or some such format) before the iPod will allow you to upload them. And he wasn't the only person/place I heard this from.
This seemed beyond rediculous to me ... so I decided I wouldn't buy one.

I must say, I was often wondering about how they keep managing to sell the shit out of the things. I just chalked it up to dumb consumers who just don't know any better.
Perhaps, in light of your information, I shall go out and buy an iPod now.
Of course, I think apple would LIKE you to use the AAC (I think that's what it is...) format, but it is definitely not required. iTunes defaults to ripping music into this format but you can disable the AAC format by selecting mp3 in the preferences:

and it causes no incompatability problems with the iPod.
The Tech Specs Page (http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html) shows all the different compatible formats!
Enjoy your iPod! This new Nano is definitely making me consider replacing my 3 year old model...
the only thing I don't like much about iTunes on PC is that it takes so much more memory compared to Winamp 5, you know?
