The original Space Quest 2 anyone?

A few days ago I found a copy of Space Quest 2 in the bargain bin of a local supermarket for the equivalent of 1 US$. Naturally I bought it, even though I already have the SQ collection. But now I'm unsure if it's identical to the 1987 original.

I looked it up on MobyGames but couldn't find any info on the packaging, manuals etc.

It comes on two 3.5" DD-floppys, there is one Space Quest 2 manual (black text, white paper, no pictures), one of the generic Sierra manuals and one mail-in card for InterAction Magazine subscriptions. No comic as I've seen mentioned in some places.

The outer sleeve looks like the original (nothing to suggest this should be a budget release nor magazine quotes etc.). The inner box is plain white. Not the yellowish one with the mountain and pine tree photo from early nineties.

Can anyone confirm if this is the original? It's not that I'm a collector or anything (although I DO own a lot of the old Sierra titles), but I'm just curious if it's actually one of the 1987 batch that's survived (on store shelves none-the-less) until now, still wrapped and in a near mint condition box.

EDIT:actually, reading what the site says, it comes on one 3.5" floppy
or two 5.25" floppy's, and seeing as yours is two 3.5" discs, it probably is a different version, but still no idea if it's the original or not.

Can you get a version number from the menu in the game, or there could be a file in the game folder that has the version info.

Well, my copy has three 5.25 disks, so the two 3.5's make sense, however it's strange that you didn't get the comic... (Mine dissapeared years ago... sniff...)

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I also took the absence of 5.25" floppys as a sign of a later release. I mean, even Colonels Bequest and Codename: Iceman had those, years later.

I'll install and check the version number.

Mine is 5 25 floppies, around five of them spread on 360k each.

I guess they must have released some copies on DD disks, and some on HD.

Another wierd thing is that on my box it says that both 3.5's and 5.25's are included, but I don't remember ever having 3.5's.

lucky devils. where can iget good ole cheap games (gabriel knight, space quest,...) considering i live in europe.  :'(

Try Ebay, you can get just about any game you like there, and usually pretty cheap, especially the old ones, but it seems strange that you can buy on ebay but abandonware is wrong, in reality the author is not making any money either way. The only difference is you may get a box

It's really hard to win them off Ebay, because there are idiots out there who buy stuff just to sell it again, thus ruining everything for collectors.
The only reason I have SQ1 and 2 boxed is because I got them 15 years ago.

Try fleamarkets and garage sales. I often come across old games in places like that. At least you can get the boxes and manuals. If the disks turn out to be broken (they often are after 10-15 years) you can download the game as abandonware with a good conscience.

I bought a three CD collection of the first five Kings Quest games and a boxed version of Kings Quest 6 for two dollars at a yard sale a few weeks ago. It made me happy. I now try to go to every yard sale that the Thrifty Nickel says has computer games, just in case I find more deals like that.
