A lot of people has proved themselves over and over in games in AGS here. If this thread is offensive to some, the mods may lock.
So my question would be, who in your opinion would make the perfect AGS team that could make a game rivalling Vampire Story etc :).
----------------------------
Mine would be:
Spriters: Progzmax (and krysis). Progz is the master of sprites, as seen in all his games, and krysis is the cartoon master. I think they'd give bill tiller a run for his money. (I'd also add Nacho that list after seeing his mittens interpretations. Another option would be bernie. And also zabnat.
Animation: Big Brother, Progzmax, SpacePirateCaine, Helm, zabnat. Cannot be more professional than that.
Background Artists: Loominous and mashpotato. What a beautiful game it could be.
(if pixelled, oldskool bgs): Progzmax, since I think he is unrivaled in that area. Maybe also Neil Dnuma and Krysis.
Writers: Yahtzee combined with Grundislav. Nuff said.
Scriptors: CJ!! Rui, Vince Twelve.
Dialoge Writers: So many here, I guess Yahtzee and Iceman and the ivy (the get the feminine influence).
Music: Nikolas with support from mods and The Scorposer (if spooks taught us anything)
This place has talent. This is all hypothetical of course (scenario, making a game rivalling Vampire Story or such) :)
Change the Subject of this thread to "The Brown Nosing Thread". ;)
If I may add/switch some people:
Music: Loominous (he started out from music and then went to graphics. BTW, if you go to igors' site there is a flash little game, the music written by Loominous. :) AND of course Geoffkhan!
Graphics: Andail of course! Has anyone seen his site?, Mr. Colossal. Helm (really good comic artist), Captain Binky (the art guy behind the Forgoten Ellement ;)). Igor! I forgot Igor! Sorry :S
Now, on to the serious stuff: Why would we want to make a game "rival" of Vampyre story. As far as I know VS is a comercial project and will be publihsed properly. Certainly the AGS project could work, but until now, all collaboration projects have failed (the big ones, not between 2-3 people tops.)
Another issue would be the financial matter. Sorry to bring this up and keep bringing it up, but some of the people mentioned in this thread, work in the games, and frankly it would be difficult to devote the time needed for such a project. Mr. Colossal, me, BB, Andail and other people work (full-time I guess), so there is little time...
Anyway I do think that AGS has talent and probably all it should take is someone really good in organising to get this thing really off ground.
But indeed after this rather long post, there is NO doubt that the AGS forums have all the talent needed.
Thank you for including me :)
I've often thought about the perfect AGS music squad, comprising of Geoffkhan, Nikolas, possibly Cameron and eternal_renegade.
Think!
They'd be an unstoppable force of notation!
The humanity!!!
The perfect team are a group of friends working together and enjoying it!
I know I would make the perfect team.
me, tim schafer.
Me and Pablo.
Me, and motivation.
Sprite Artist: Flukeblake
Story: Dan_N_Gamez
Backgrounds: Hammerite
Coding: Yodaman111
Music: -==The Brat==-
Public Relations: Kickme
And finally, to keep the team motivated and consistent, a guy who has worked in severall completed games that have succeded in the Roger Awards ceremony... Farlander!
What? What? What? Why would you put Yodaman as the coder? Haven't you seen his sprite art? I put forward the motion for Yodaman to be the sprite artist, Flukezy to be the Music guy and The Brat can be the coder.
More important than the perfect AGS team is who would play the characters in the game. I propose Owen Wilson for the part of Roger, and Blue Cup as himself.
Hm, aren't these people still reading the posts here in the forums? I should think so at least.
I say! stop talking about great teams, instead: get them togheter and make great games!! ;D
Me on backgrounds? O_o Backgrounds are not my friend...
But thanks for thinking of me; maybe I could be the perfect AGS team's coffee-gopher or something ;)

Ooh, I made a list!
While getting together a team like this would be as incredible as it is unlikely, it is plausible that you or anyone on these forums could collaborate with one or a couple of the people on this list (or with any other talented AGSers) to make a damn fine game. The primary game that I'm working on now, for example, has three people from Calcaver's list (counting myself) contributing in some way to it.
I've had a great time collaborating with various members of this community and really want to collaborate with more people in the future. Depending on my schedule, anyone with a unique game idea, demonstrable talent, or a good track record could easily get me to join their team. I'd assume the same goes for many of the people on this list and on the forum in general.
So don't just imagine forming a dream team... develop your skills, make a few games that demonstrate what you're capable of, and approach the person or persons that you'd like to collaborate with.
And on a side note, the people on top of my personal "want to collaborate with someday" list are Dave Gilbert and Helm.

So true!
I was, when first joining AGS, only interested in solo work. Doing EVERY aspect (except music) on my own. However, since the founding of the AoK team, I don't know that I'll go back to solo work. Working with a team is awesome.
There is enough talent floating around here that there are un-ending combinations of members that would make incredible games together. I think it's unfair to single out a few individuals as it makes those not selected feel bad.
I am, of course, not making that statement due to the fact that none of you put me on your dream teams ;)
I would work with you, Darth.*
*Do you feel better now? Or worse? :D
Alright, I saw this thread and just had had had had to post. Indeed, the perfect team will never be, because people are so unpredictable and bodge them up together and there's no telling what will happen. Sure, it'll work for a short period at best, but it will crash and burn very violently when it ends. (bing! ideea: what if the perfect team works only once a year on project, say at mittens; but really really hard; or something, i don't know...)
Anyway, anyone can dream, right? So here I go...
Project Leader: Yahtzee and CJ. Why, 'cause hey, two of my favorite gods.
Graphics: Helm and ProgZmax. These guys are artists. And we all know that no-one does art better than artists, right.
Music: mOds and Grundislav (or who ever did the music in Ben Jordan 1). Definetly. I liked what mOds did in Trilby's Notes and the guitar soundtrack in Ben Jordan 1. You know the one, when Ben's in town. I think.
Scripting: SSH and CJ. SSH has done some incredible stuff. And what more can be said about CJ?
Story Writer: Yahtzee. The guy's amazing.
Puzzles: Yahtzee. The puzzles in all his games are not too easy but not too hard, either.
Office Ass Kisser: me! Hey, if you get to hang arround such people, wouldn't you?
Keep in mind that I haven't gathered that much info and this is the best I could do.
Kudos!
QuoteGraphics: Helm and ProgZmax. These guys are artists. And we all know that no-one does art better than artists, right.
We are artists? And what is everybody else? This thread is stupid to begin with, but it's becoming unbearable. I bet you haven't even played any of my games, and the only reason you know my name now is because you called me 'smacktard'. There's lots of people here with much more crowd-pleasing art styles than me, why don't you search around and include them to your little lineups.
What I see from this thread is 'this is a list of people I like' or even worse 'this is a list of people I think I should mention to be accepted' and the moderators should know better than to let it roll.
It's not often that I agree with Helm, but now I couldn't agree more. Pabs couldn't have said it better... What's with the stupid ass kissing threads or posts in competitions, and why do people make those, it's so irritating. And I don't mean because I don't get any, I just can help feeling humiliated on the persons behalf.

What's with the stupid ass kissing threads ...
Yeah, I agree - I dont like ass kissing either, which is why I chose prince randian and johnny eck for my dream team. Guys with no asses rule!
I was looking on the internet earlier today to look at the stories of these two men. Fascinating stuff. One question was left unanswered. How did Mr Eck go toilet? I doubt they had colostimi (spelling error) bags back then.
The people I'd ideally work with on a game here, won't be mentioned, as they know who they are. :)
Helm is half right.
I don't see this thread as bad per se. Maybe calcver did not know about the sphynx project or the other tries that have been made.
All I see behind his post is the ambition to do something really really good. It is not that bad.
Now naming some people could be good or bad, depending on how one takes it. I took it the good way, Helm took it the bad way. Simple stuff really...
Everybody can make graphics, not everyone can make kick ass graphics though. Am I wrong here?
Either way this is a very dagnerous thread.

Helm, I'll take anything you have to throw at me, even a punch to the face, but I feel compelled to defend myself. Indeed I haven't played any of your games, because a) "fatman doesn't wanna run..." and b) the last thing I need is another gorrilaz game. But you made a comic, for a comercial product, that must say something about you (in a good way) and you aren't exactly some little shit that just came in here. So sorry for having blind faith in you. I'm changing my artists: Yahtzee and Grundislav. Why do I choose them? Cause Yahtzee's character art and Grundislav's BJ backgrounds make one really interesting combination.
And I don't understand why people are angry about this thread. It's quite harmless. It's just people discussion something. It's like one of those "What's your favorite food?" questions. Some people prefer just fries, and somee people prefer full course dinners. I'm also pretty sure that this thread was not intended as an ass-kissing thread, nor all the posts were written with the thought of rubbing up to people so they'll like you.
PS: Gilbot.
Personally, I don't think that anyone mentioning who they would like to work with is ass kissing as much as just wishful thinking. Frankly, I'm rather flattered so many people think my art is decent enough to want to work with me, since I've never had a high opinion of what I do. I get the sense that in this particular area Helm and I are much alike, and I think a healthy dollop of modesty about what you do is a very, very good thing. The point where we differ is that I don't see anything wrong in stating who you'd like to work with, but then I take such things as compliments!

I too thought this thread was a load of rubbish until someone included me on their list. ;D
I guess it is a dangerous thread, that's why I said mods could kill it at the beginning. I was just saying how much of a beautiful game can be made here (hypothetically) since if you put some guys here together one of the best most awesome games could be made that would rival CMI, Vampyre story etc. The AGS people has that ability, it would be very interesting to see a team forming from right here in AGS (where all of the people has so much experience and they don't start out commercial) and make a kick-ass commercial game. It shouldn't be hard if someone like grundislav or Dave Gilbert takes the lead as manager/overseer and make sure it completes. It's not a collab like the failed one since this would be a team working towards a commercial game just like any other pro team out there :). but it's all hypothetical. (in their free time of course)
I don't think people should feel bad for not mentioned, naturally one would want a bill tiller in your team, it's only natural, that doesn't mean the other people aren't good, you just like his style more. Haha, sorry if I offended some or made some feel left out, you are all special :)
The trouble with volunteer versus real commerical teams is that YOU CANNOT FORCE PEOPLE TO WORK. And many of our great talents in all the areas mentioned are lazy. So some upfront cash would probably be required to motivate people...

I can.
Not every people, but I still can :)
Dan: I was not involved with making art for Fatman. Ionias did that all on his own. I don't even know what you're on about another Gorillaz game, I won't even bother trying to understand, suffice to say I have not made any games about that pop band either. You make no sense.
Calacver: 'rivalling commerical games' I think a lot of people would benefit from coming to terms with what the special restrictions but more importantly special priviledges of being an amateur game designer are about. I don't think we should be trying to look like the big boys. We shouldn't be modelling our games after theirs. There's a different niche here for our work, and it's special because it's not product and therefore challenging, new and sometimes even downright odd things can be attempted. Adventure games like a single passenger in a space ship locked in philosophical discourse with the ship's main AI, or adventure games about planning a robbery through a series of minigames, or adventure games about surviving in a gladiatorial arena through careful strategy and combat skill. Not another CMI. Not enough Broken Sword. Not another King's Quest. If some people on these boards wanted to work in the commercial industry, they right well could. Don't you think there's a reason they're not persuing that?
Not everybody here wants to make something that is similar, or trying to be better than CMI or this Vampyre Story game. That is not the apex that this community should be gearing towards, in my opinion.
Helm, I think he likes to use a 'z' for an 's', and was talking about Moose wars:
"Gorillas clone done in AGS"
But then, you probably knew that?
You're right Helm, that game I was making, then stopped, and am only recently working on again; I'm not trying to make another CMI or Broken Sword, I'm trying to make a game with my own identity. Something that makes people look at it and say "That's a ManicMatt game" rather than "That's a game that looks like king's quest" or whatever. Not as though I could recreate any of those games successfully even if I wanted to, so why try?
In case anyone doesn't get it yet, the point here is that as amateur developers, we can do things that commercial developers CAN'T because we are not restricted by the need to sell enough copies of the game to make a profit.
Some people make great games. Others CONTINUE making great games. I can only compile a dream team because I've seen constant good things from those people, which isn't to say no-one else is doing it, but these people are making themselves known. It's almost like they want to be famous, even if they really don't! At the end of the day this is just a bit of fun and as Progz says - wishful thinking :) I'm sure some people post a great impression on some players after a debut game or something, but I'm not so impressionable. Consistency as a person is something I take into consideration, too.
In the end, whenever something is released and it's been made by a team - it effectively already is a dream team. It was what the members in that team most wanted, and have gotten the highest results from for themselves at least. With lots of good feedback, it's obvious that team worked really well together.
Then someone makes a parody!
Effectively I see this thread as a parody. It's meaning is to be a humorous or satirical imitation of teams that probably don't exist, yet could, despite how really great or not they would be. They'd have their problems, afterall :p
I'm sure in the future we will see some commercial successes through AGS, if that's what people intend to do. I've found I can't make a game on my own. If i could, I would have a catalogue of strange adventures - ones that couldn't be compared to anything commercial, some with barely any influence from other adventure games either. But it cannot be done, I've never been happy with my art, not to justify my ideas anyway. There are good reasons in this thread though as to why people don't persue a commercial goal. This is afterall a hobby, and most of us are happy with any kind of help we get. The end result, for those who took their time - is usually better than rewarding, too.
Yes, why must we rival the "big boys". We should strive to create our own identity, our own games. Which should be free by the way. Yes, the thing about AGS is that it's free and it's a great peace of software. So naturally people will want to profit from that. Those are the sharks. They swim through these waters and try to grab us, the unsuspecting AGSers to use us in making their comercial games. I bet they also hire tech specialists (or something) so that they can upgrade the graphics. Blerghh! I say.
If CJ strives to keep everything free, why shouldn't we?
Actually, I disagree with that. I don't think there are any sharks here trying to make a buck off of other people. And for that matter, I actually do intend to make a commercial game with AGS someday. It will be huge, I'll make it pretty much all by myself, and it'll probably cost $10-$15. I'm not sure about the details, but I don't think there's anything wrong with making a commercial product with AGS, even within the independent community.
P.S. Everybody go buy the Shivah Deluxe (http://www.firehydrantred.com/davelgil/).
I don't know Er, it just doesn't feel good using freeware to make comercial. I myself will NEVER use AGS to make a comercial game, independently or with a team.
Just imagine if the entire games database was filled with comercial games. What would we do then. 'Cause anyone can slap a price on something.
PS: When are we going to fly that kite, you promised!
This argument has happened many times on these forums, Dan. No one is forcing you to buy a commercial game. You don't need it. Thus, charging for it is completely up to them. Of course, if they didn't put the time and effort into it to make the game worth what they charge, no one's going to buy it anyways.
So, if someone is willing to put in extra work and spend some cash of their own to make a game that might be considered commercial quality, you shouldn't be angry that they're asking for compensation. If you don't think it's worth the money, just don't buy it.
And people use freeware to make commercial products all the time. There's no sense in re-inventing the wheel if a guy down the block is giving them away for free, no matter what kind of car you're putting it on, freeware or commercial... and also I really need to work on my analogy skills.
Yeah, I really see no problem with selling a product if the price matches the quality/game length. Charging $40 bucks for a game you can play through in 10 minutes probably isn't a good idea, especially if it looks really amateur. And by not a good idea I mean you most likely won't get word-of-mouth sales, which is what independent devs thrive on.

With "nightmare", do you mean a nightmare to work in, or with nightmare-ish results? I believe having Hitler or Satan leading your teams may at least ensure ambitious projects with huge budgets.
A bit of both, but with Hitler in charge, the game might have racist content and propaganda, the artist Laurence will make every pink and orange, Carol will make the puzzles all about math, and the spicegirls will be banging on cans and pots warbling out awful vocals. (Without outside aid)
I think the zombie and Alan speak for themselves.
Yes indeed, in a nightmare team it is hell to work with (ergo Satan) and the results will be catastrophic.
