Title: The Walking Dead [TV Serie]
Post by: arj0n on Fri 12/11/2010 09:50:12
What are your thoughts of the new horror-drama tv serie "The Walking Dead" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1520211/).
So far I've really enjoyed the first 2 parts, awesome. It also gave me the feeling watching a great Stephen King movie.

Plot: Cast on the popular comic book series by Robert Kirkman, the series follows Rick Grimes and a band of survivors trying to seek a safe haven during a zombie uprising.

Based on the comic book series of the same name written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics.

Frank Darabont is the director & screenwriter of this tv-serie and has also done The Woman in the Room (1983), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), The Green Mile (1999) & The Mist (2007), all great Stephen King movies.

So far so good, I've also enjoyed the first two episodes, and very interested to see where this is going.
And it's also pretty classic for a video game adaptation...

Only watched the first episode and it was okay, could be good. It's hard to not use any cliche when you make a work about zombies, though the begining is a lot like mix of Zombieland and 28 days...still if it's done the right way, it might end up fine.

Found it rather boring to be honest.  They abridged or cut several gory and intense scenes from the comic for no good reason, and the filler they put in place just slows the pace down to a crawl.  Still, the zombie effects were top notch, especially for a series.  I'll probably wait until the full season is done and then give it a watch and see if it improves.

I really like it so far but yeah, it could be better. It's hard to re-invent the genre/trump Dawn of the Dead though, so I'm going to give it some time.

I think it's pretty good. Better than the comic (which aims for gritty but usually ends up with silly), for sure. The pilot was much better than the second episode and its ludicrous racist redneck fuckwit, but even though it seems obvious that he's not dead and will cause stupidly annoying complications later, I'm still cautiously optimistic.

Seems like it must be insanely expensive to produce, so I hope they get to continue making it at this scale and we don't end up with the whole show as a post-apocalyptic soap opera taking place in that camping spot with maybe a zombie or two showing up every couple of episodes.

The comic is bloody great, not too sure about the series. It's surprisingly accurate but we shall see.

I don't know anything about the comic but so far I like the show. It's a little slow paced, but I think that kind of fits the survival horror angle. Hopefully the show will only get better.

I love the effects in this. Several videos already appeared on youtube on how long the make up took.

Just watched the first two episodes.
I'm really enjoying it.  I've always wanted a zombie series, so this is like an early Xmas present.  And I gather they've already bought a second season.

If you watched the show but never read the comic, I urge you to do so!

Just watched ep3, great story so far.
The end came a bit as a surprise to me,
Spoiler
hand cut-of and [probably] not being on that roof anymore.

Can't wait for ep4  :)

I feel like watching a really boring zombie movie. I find nothing to grab upon. However the end of episode 1, left me wanting to see who was that. Hopefully this won't be boring as fuck.

It's strongly based on character development Dual, there are some pretty shocking bits.

Must admit, the 3rd episode was kind of boring for the most part, too much standing around discussing their next move and not enough zombies.  However, the ending was brilliant:

Spoiler
Merle Dixon is clearly going to become some kind of Zombie warlord leading an army of the undead

This is kind of a cross between Dawn of the Dead and The Stand... I like it.

I'm really digging this show, I mean, to me it's a lot closer to Romero's earlier work (Which I love) than anything else zombie related I've seen recently.

I saw only the first episode but it was simply awesome!
Have to watch the other ones too  :P

I've always wanted to see a good zombie series - my prayers have been heard  ;D

Maybe this would be a good place to mention TERRIERS, the excellent new show on FX (Wednesdays).

The name may not be all that compelling, but the premise (a pair of mismatched partners work as low-rent P.I.s in California while dealing with their complicated private lives) should be crowd-pleasing enough, while the quality of the stories, the writing and particularly the acting really make it a treat for connoisseurs of TV dramas.

The best comparison I can come up with is Veronica Mars, but Terriers feels less stylized and cutesy, more charmingly scruffy and "real" in its drama. It also makes a good match with FX's Justified, though honestly, it kind of blows that show out of the water.

I agree so much with Snarky here.  I "ell oh vee ee" LOVED Veronica Mars and I'm really digging Terriers, partially for the Mars-ish vibe that I got from it from the very first episode.

OT: I quite enjoy Walking Dead so far, but it hasn't been quite what I want to see from a zombie TV show yet.  The pacing's been a bit off.  But it's just starting and it's still miles above most TV.

As someone who poured through about five or six of the comics in a single night a few years back, I was really excited to see what AMC was going to do with this. I wasn't disappointed, and it really left me wanting for more.

Wow, this series just keeps getting better and better.
I'm actually loving it a lot.
Can't wait for next week's season finale!

Spoiler
I still think Mearle is going to make a return and the shit is going to hit the fan.

I noticed something strange:
In part 5 - Wildfire:
* They all drove away from the camping site.
* Then Dale’s Winnebago got trouble, the hose broke down again so they couldn't drive on.
* They discuss to drive with a car to the nearest gas station or something to see what they can find to fix it.
* They actually do not go to that gas station [or I have missed something] and I didn't see them fix anything cause
there was no duct tape anymore
* They decide to leave the zombie-to-be-guy who has been bitten along the road as he asked them to do.
* Next thing: they all drive. Also Dale’s Winnebago which has the broken hose so it shouldn't be able to drive...

Anyone can clear this up or is it a mistake?

I noticed the same thing Arj0n, dunno what happened there, but it did seem strange that he Winnebago just suddenly became fixed. Hell I don't care though, it's a good zombie story.

I also noticed that. I think maybe what happened was that the hose wasn't completely broken, maybe they were just pointing out that it was on the verge of breaking. Maybe they just stopped to let it cool down or something?

Spoiler

I think a few of them went to the gas station for supplies while the others waited and babysat the camper and Jim... then they fixed her up and left Jim behind.  Maybe it wasn't especially shown on the screen, but lets assume the gas-station trip was uneventful and we didn't need to see it.  After-all, they then went on a 100 mile trek to the CDC HQ which apparently passed without incident... what's important is that they are there now and what happens next.

For those that were talking about Terriers earlier in the thread, I have some baaad news (http://www.deadline.com/2010/12/fx-cancels-terriers-after-one-season/).

For what it's worth it was a great show, albeit with a terrible marketing campaign and name.

Yeah, I heard. Fuck.

Blame FX for the terrible publicity campaign. Fair enough. But I also blame people for not tuning in (it actually kept on losing viewers) to a show that all the critics loved. What the hell is wrong with you people?

I was going to say "This was pretty much Big Lebowski: The Series... how could you not love that?!" (It's not quite true, since Terriers was much more sincere and serious than the movie, but still...) Then I remembered that The Big Lebowski was also a box office flop. I guess people just hate things that are good.

I just learned that they also canceled FlashForward. :(
It wouldn't annoy me as much if they didn't make season after season of really crappy bullshit.

I wish the networks could take torrent downloads into conisderation as welll :D

Only the really big  shows make it to TV down here, and it's normally about a year after they've initially aired, which forces me to torrent my television shows in order to watch the good stuff :D I haven't even turned my TV on in years (save to play my Wii!).

So unfortunately I can't help with the ratings :(

Flashforward wasn't a very good series, but the idea intrigued me so I ended up reading the book the series was based on. It's very different and actually MUCH better!!!

I'm actually not disappointed about that one at all. That show was poorly executed and quite cheesy. Good idea though.

I was actually rather surprised than disappointed, I'd never have thought they'd cancel it that early.
And it was another reminder that I don't have the same taste as the masses, which is a good thing of course, apart from the disadvantage of stuff I like being more likely to get canceled than stuff I find unwatchable.

I'm waiting for Breaking Bad and Hung to continue; I hope those don't get canceled before their time as well.

On topic, I've skimmed the first few comics, and it seems the TV series' storyline deviates a bit? I didn't find the CDC in the comics but didn't look to closely either to not spoiler myself.

Not to spoil too much but apart from the first episode, the show is vastly different form the comic. There are some similarities, but it uses the comic as a jumping off point rather than a Bible.

The CDC is most definitely not in the comic, I was surprised to see it show up!
