Title: There goes Marvel...
Post by: Chicky on Mon 31/08/2009 19:32:30
This is bloody mental, i'm freaking out here!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/aug/31/disney-marvel-buy-out

'The Walt Disney empire is to buy the superheroes stable Marvel Entertainment for $4bn (£2.5bn) in a star-studded Hollywood deal that unites family names such as Mickey Mouse with lucrative characters including Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk and the X-Men.'

Gutted!

Meh, more of a DC guy but still one major thing is that there goes any hope for a Marvel movie to be other than PG-13 or as I like to say - out of the "suck" zone.
Seems like comics are coming a full circle - from being kids stuff to becoming art and now they might be going to the kiddies again...part of me dies with each step.

You know, if I gave a rat's ass about comics, that would probably be big news. I suppose Disney will be pretty darn mighty in parts of the entertainment sector now, though.

This better not lead to Iron Man 2 sucking. Iron Man was great.

Well, disney now controls everything marvel EXCEPT for the comics.
I lost intrest in comics about a year ago but I lost interst in marvel and dc before that.

I'd like to point out that Disney owns a lot of things. They're not gonna suddenly ruin all the comic books.

Yeah, I doubt Disney and going to buy something purely to suck it up. They wont start making Spiderman/Mickey Mouse crossover movies or anything.

I was under the impression that Marvel Enterprise covers the comic and the movie rights?

Oh and i can't wait to see Beauty and The Beast!  :P

Yeah, the comics won't change. Many are comparing the deal to Disney owning Pixar or Miramax, with little to no negative creative involvement.

As such, I can only see this as a positive - with Disney's resources they may be able to bring the comics to a larger market, which is something I would be very keen on seeing (not just for Marvel, but potentially for the medium as a whole.)

Also: Paramount are currently publishing Iron Man 2, and apparently Disney have no plans to interfere with that and honour the original agreement.

Actually, I think the most interesting thing is to look at this from the opposite direction: Marvel now "owns" the Disney characters. (Or, at least the company that owns Marvel owns them.) Can we hope that Marvel-Disney will do a better job publishing Disney comics than before? I could go for some Deluxe Editions of Carl Barks' Collected Works.

You know guys...the day Disney bought a hockey team, I know that there was something bad on the entertainement industry.

Damn, if only they'd have been bought out by Jerry Brockheimer studios.

Oh yes, the glorious Carl Barks era :) That was when Donald Duck was exciting and interesting, and not just a silly farse.
