Title: They think we're schmucks
Post by: ManicMatt on Mon 16/01/2006 23:16:57
What is it with these companies that give you bleeding obvious advice when something goes wrong?

Read this to see what I mean:

After you have loaded the software on to the computer plug the cable
into
the PC.
Then check the settings in the menu and change them accordingly.

PLUG THE CABLE IN! Of course! Why didn't I think of that? Oh will you look at that? I forgot to turn the computer on as well! They take me for a fool!

(Or perhaps they don't have a frigging clue themselves?)

Well, to you it may seem obvious and silly, but they were probably dealing with people that forgot to do the obvious (or even worse cases) in the past.

There is a list of funny tech support issues somewhere on the internet.

EDIT:

Here is a couple of those sites:

They should ask you if you're a beginner, intermidate or advanced first.

A bit off topic, apologise for that, but this brought to my mind a thing that happend a while ago at school. As in, there were a few girls who couldn't print some text and thought I was good with computers. So they asked me to help. After a while of examining it I plugged on the power cord, and the machine started printing.  :D Ha, they were so impressed. Now they asked my help again a while ago, I am now the computer guru in our school... the other time they were trying to copy some text from the internet into Word... :P

Anyway. My sister's a DI, and she had this problem with her loudspeakers. So after an hour of fixing it she finally lowered herself to the level of a normal human being and took the manual from the packega. And the power chord was under it... So no, they don't take us for idiots. They take us for normal people who have no idea of what they are doing.

Heh, but that's how it goes :D Though being the oen that's supposed to know computers would probably not be the ideal way to climb up the social board.

If you think that's bad, you should try being a Tiscali UK customer! ;)

^ Yeah, you have to go by the name of "Elliott Hird" and be disliked by the community.

Awww! Well, I have a little quote for people who find themselves disliked, but only because they post too much crap, and that is:

QuoteYou wouldn't open your mouth at everything said, so why open your mind?

Back to topic - Matt, I agree - there are a lot of cases of being sent some crap default answer, thats the way a lot of co-orporations run these days. In the past few weeks tho I've dealt with a few businesses that have had some really good online service. CafePress sent me a "customized" (by that I mean definitely written specifically for me) email about a FoY t-shirt (tut tut) and also ALG, who do student funding, posted me a whole essay of in-depth replies to a silly comment I made in an email to them :P So maybe things are on the up?

So anyway, what happened when you plugged the cable in? :P

ha freaking ha! I guess I'll write back to them and tell them their excellent advise didn't work. Then they'll probably write back and say "Are you sure you plugged the cable into your mobile phone, and not your arse?"

And Elliott, I wouldn't say i disliked you, in fact you amuse me.  :P
