Last year [09-2010] my girlfriend and I where in Greece for holiday which was nice b.t.w.
So, we decided to hire a quad. At the end of the day I let her drive while I was sitting on the
back, the 2nd persons seat. Unfortunately she lost control of the quad and we crashed,
ending up with her under the quad en me being launched and smashed on the road.
Result: She: a heavy concussion, me: a broken arm right below the elbow of my right arm.
I didn't want to have it fixed in Greece so I had to wait until the holiday was over, fly back to
Holland [pain due to the pressure in the airplane sucks], having a bacteria check and then wait
again for surgery. That means 3 weeks waiting having a broken arm...
It's weird but all muscles in the arm had shrunk to almost nothing and my wrist and hand where
very badly bruised. Couldn't even hold something lite like a cigarette, no power and shaking like
having Parkinson [hand wrist problem] or touch my nose with my index finger [elbow/arm problem]
After intensive physiotherapy I'm able again to use my hand/wrist and arm like I was used to,
although I will never be able to bent my hand like I could before the crash.
This summer the plate will be removed [Yeey] but I will need physiotherapy till the end of 2011...
My girlfriend is going well now, but it took her like 4 months to recover.
She is still having some minor issues, it will take about another 4 months to fully recover.
So I guess we were still lucky cause lot's of quad accidents seem to have a fatal [read:deadly] ending....
Lesson: never let your girlfriend driving a quad... [sorry Tamara ;)]
In the x-ray photo you can see my right arm with the fracture [from A to B].
The inlay shows how they fixed it: a titanium plate with nine screws.
[the x-ray plate-with-screws inlay is not my plate and arm, it's from someone
else since I do not have a copy of an x-ray photo of my own arm with plate]

woah, titanium inlay that's awesome! That almost makes you a terminator, man.

Exactly, it would have been much better if you were driving and lost control of the vehicle. Then she would have the broken arm and you would have the heavy concussion.
When I was in Tunisia, we went to the "desert" part of the country (sand dunes, oasis, camels, Star wars etc.) and there a bunch of us rented quads. It was awesome, riding that hing across the sand, very, very much fun. Plus you don't get hurt when you fall, so I'm real sorry you had such a bad experience with a quad, that looks like a really f-ed up fracture.
Oh, the only bad thing was, that the quad was rather worn down and probably wasn't serviced correctly so if I held my hand on the handle and the brake lever, I'd get shocks of electricity, nothing too terrible, but annoying. ;D

They are actually rebuilding me into Iron Man: Titanium (http://www.wired.com/underwire/2010/09/iron-man-titanium/) ;)
So this summer you'll lose your hard earned status of a cyborg, that your girlfriend gave you. Shame. Better make all use of your special abilities while you still have them.

God cursed you from not informing me and meeting with me ;)
On a serious note, wow :P
I've had a couple concussions from hockey, and I'll tell you that's no fun. I've never had a bionic arm, though, so I can't relate on that front. On to quads, they rock! One summer treeplanting they helicoptered a quad in for me on this remote access block -you haven't lived until you've driven one of these things through swamps and clearcuts.

Yes, that's right, they PAID me to do it. Buwuhahahahahah!

Awesome!
Haha awww, Arjon!
Hope you enjoy your time as a cyborg and get all fixed up soon. :)
Ouch, that's pretty rough! But seriously, you should've seen this coming. Never let a woman control a motor vehicle, that's just common sense ;)
Anyway, hope you guys get well soon. Tell Tamara my best wishes :)
I looked at the x-ray first and immediately thought it was hi-res art for an adventure game...
And next time get travel medical insurance.
It's about $35 per person a week here in Canada. I never leave the country without it. :P
You should never let me drive a quad either (and I happen to not be someone's GF). Nothing happened while I was driving a quad yet, but I just don't feel safe in them.
Wish you a full recovery Arj0n.
Pffft, women shouldn't even be *allowed* to drive! amirite fellas!....
fellas?
